8th Grade Math Topics

The focus of 8th grade math is to build the foundation for high school algebra as well as exploring topics in
geometry and data. Here is a general outline for each trimester:

• First trimester → transformations, congruence, similarity (geometry), linear relationships (algebra)

• Second trimester → solving linear relationships (algebra), functions (algebra), volume of spheres,
cylinders & cones (geometry)

• Third trimester → exponents (number sense), Pythagorean Theorem & irrational numbers (geometry &
number sense), scatterplots (data)

Classwork
During class students will work collaboratively to understand content. Each student will keep a notebook in
their composition book with notes, vocabulary, and mathematical thinking. We will access the Illustrative Math
curriculum on Chromebooks as well as exploring other math tasks.

Grading
Overall grades will be based 70% on assessments (tests, quizzes, projects) and 30% on daily work (classwork,
homework, problems of the week, warm ups). Grades are based on the math standards (link available on my
website).

A → Exceeding Standard(s)
B → Meeting Standard(s)
C → Approaching Standard(s)
D → Below Standard(s)/Entry Level
F → Little or No Evidence of understanding
For a more detailed rubric, please see my website (mrsvolke.weebly.com)

Tests
Tests and quizzes can be re-taken as long as ALL assignments have been completed and the student has
demonstrated that he/she has worked to increase his/her understanding of the content. Reassessments CANNOT
happen during class. Students must make an appointment with Mrs. Volke to complete the re-take assessment
during lunch.
Absences
Students who miss class are responsible for getting the assignments and notes they missed and completing the
work. Mrs. Volke is available during lunch most days to help students understand the material they missed.

Homework
Homework will be assigned throughout the school year. Usually, students are given two days to complete the
assignment. Some homework will be printed and some will need to be accessed through Google Classroom or
LearnZillion. Students are responsible for recording homework in their planner.

Behavior Expectations:
Students are expected to actively engage and fully participate in all activities during class. I expect everyone to
be respectful, responsible, and kind. We will develop rules as a class.

When a student is struggling with these expectations, you can expect me to work on solving the problem with
the student. I will contact parents for repeated unresolved problems.

Skyward
I will update Skyward grades at least once a week. Please check regularly so that you can follow their progress.
I will post copies of assignments on my website: mrsvolke.weebly.com.
