HOMEWORK (2018-II)

TALLER 2

1a. (2.5/5) An alternative circuit for energizing an inductor and removing the stored
energy without damaging a transistor is shown in the next Fig. Here 𝑉𝐶𝐶 = 12 V, L
= 75 mH, and the zener breakdown voltage is 𝑉𝑍 = 20 V. The transistor switch
opens and closes periodically with 𝑡𝑜𝑛 = 20 ms and 𝑡𝑜𝑓𝑓 = 50 ms.
(a) Explain how the zener diode allows the switch to open.
(b) Determine and sketch, manually, the inductor current 𝑖𝐿 (𝑡) and the zener
diode current 𝑖𝑍 (𝑡) for one switching period.
(c) Sketch, manually, 𝑝(𝑡) for the inductor and the zener diode.

Use PSpice (or any other software) to simulate the circuit and
(d) Determine the average power in the inductor and in the Zener diode.
(e) Display 𝑖𝐿 (𝑡) and 𝑖𝑍 (𝑡)
(f) Repeat part (e) but include a 1.5-Ω series resistance with the inductor
(g) Compare these results with the theory

HOMEWORK (2018-II)

1b. (2.5/5) The three-phase bridge rectifier has an RL load and is supplied from a Y
connected supply.
(a) Use the method of Fourier series to obtain expressions for the output voltage
𝑣𝑜 (𝑡) and the load current 𝑖𝑜 (𝑡)
(b) If peak phase voltage is 𝑉𝑚 = 170 V at 60 Hz and the load resistance is R = 200
Ω, determine the load inductance L to limit the ripple current to 2% of the average
value 𝐼𝑑𝑐 .

2. (1/5) The full-wave rectifier of Fig. below has a 60-Hz ac source with 𝑉𝑚 = 100 V. It
is to supply a load that requires a dc voltage of 100 V and will draw 0.5 A.
Determine the filter capacitance required to limit the peak-to-peak output voltage
ripple to 1 percent of the dc output. Determine the peak and average diode
currents.

3. (1.5/5) A 20 Ω resistive load requires an average current that varies from 4.5 to
8.0 A. An isolation transformer is placed between a 120-V rms 60-Hz ac source and
a controlled single-phase full-wave rectifier. Design a circuit to meet the current
requirements. Specify the transformer turns ratio and the range of delay angle.
