Wanting to play playdough

5 June 2018. Written by T Liz

Asalamo Alaikom and Kia Ora Ayah. Over the last few weeks we have been continuing to support
you as you increase your understanding of the rules and routines at preschool. Today you decided
you wanted to play with the playdough. You tried sitting on another child’s chair. “Ayah, is that a
good choice” I asked? You looked at me and said “No” and moved away. I could see there were no
more spare chairs, so I suggested I could go and get another chair for you to sit on. You smiled and
waited patiently until I came back with a chair for you. You grinned when I told another child that

the chair was for you and they needed to wait until I got another chair for them. You watched me
get some more playdough and a playdough mat for you to use. I watched you play with the
playdough I had given you for a long time as you cut and rolled little pieces of playdough.

What Learning Occurred

Ayah’s learning pathway for this

term is to increase her
understanding of the rules and
routines at preschool. She is
increasing her knowledge about
‘good choices’ at preschool. Ayah’s
confident to express her ideas ,
both verbally and non-verbally is
increasing. Her understanding of
the concept of fairness for all is
growing as she heard the same
rules applied to other children as
well as her. Ayah is beginning to
understand the needs of others in
the group she is playing in. Kia kaha
ki tāu mahi (keep up the good work)
Ayah!

How can we extend this learning?

We can support Ayah as she

continues to deepen her
understanding of rules and routines
at preschool by talking with her
about the rules of games she wants
to participate in.
