Orphan & Destitute Care

Ashram the home for children, was set up in 1993 to

provide for children in crisis due to adverse familial
conditions. Starting off with 10 children, Ashram has now
nurtured over 100 children directly, and has helped them
stand on their own feet.

Out-reach programs supporting families and communities to

care for their children has become a major mission of the
Home. More than 500 children and families are assisted by
these programs, at any point of time.
Recognized by the Juvenile Welfare Board of Chennai District
to provide shelter to abandoned and destitute children,
Ashram serves as a Transit Care Centre and as Foster Care
and Adoption Centre.

All children attend full time school at a Balwadi nearby. They

are given supplementary classes and computer education
during evenings and weekends. Regular nutritive diet, with
medical care, and field visits with all festival celebrations
mark a child’s life in Ashram. Intense efforts are made to
strengthen his or her family so that the child can go back to
his / her family as soon as possible, in line with the UN
Conventions of the Rights of the Child.
A reputed doctor of the area, visits the Ashram regularly and
checks the children. She also makes herself available for
bi-monthly medical camps in the local schools organised by
Ashram where over 60 children benefit from the free
treatment and medicines
A qualified Social Worker and a Counsellor are available at
the Ashram premises for providing family counselling for
families in crisis. All Women Police Stations refer such cases
to the Ashram for counselling and intervention.

Donors provide for children in our outreach programs too.

Uniforms, medicines, Breakfast porridge powder, clothes,
Provisions like Dhal, oil and sugar are regularly collected for
distribution to the needy identified by our social workers.

More than 100 beneficiaries include mentally ill orphans,

poor school children not covered by any other sponsorship
schemes, and some other Homes as well. Vocational Training
is an integral component of Ashram’s activities in
strengthening the community, especially the women.
Tailoring, and Pickle, Squash, Jam making classes are
conducted regularly to benefit women of poorer sections
especially mothers of sponsored children of CARE Trust.

Linkage to Child Line and Women Police stations besides

other NGOs provide ample opportunities to serve the most
exploited and vulnerable groups of children who need timely
care and protection. More than 25 children have found
welcoming arms in Ashram during times of crisis when other
doors hesitated to open.

Total number of beneficiaries through ashram project are

about 200 in
one year.
