EXAMPLE OF A COMPLETE OUTLINE

(This one was a Human Anatomy & Physiology Assignment where students were
writing about a System of their choice and there were specific questions to be
answered about that system. Yours will vary a bit, but I just want you to have an
idea of how an Outline should look like)

Week 4 Project Outline: Integumentary System

WEEK 4 PROJECT OUTLINE

I. Integumentary system plays a big part in maintaining homeostasis. It is the

outermost organ system of the body and many of its functions are related to its

location.

II. The integumentary system consists of a major organ (skin) and many accessory

organs which include hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands and nails.

III. Skin functions in homeostasis include protection, regulation of body temperature,

sensory reception, synthesis of vitamins and hormones, and absorption of

materials. The skin acts as a barrier. Melanocytes act as a second barrier.

IV. Some mechanisms that the skin may use are:

a. inflammation,

b. evaporation,

c. sweating,

d. sensory receptors,

e. melanocytes,

f. selectively permeable skin.

V. The integumentary system is uniquely suited to its functions. The skins primary

function is to serve as a barrier against microbes, water, chemicals and

extracellular fluid loss.

VI. The integumentary system works with other body systems such as:

a. muscular system

b. the nervous system (or CNS),

c. the circulatory system

d. the ymphatic system.

VII. Some basic science research that is currently taking place to help us understand

the topic is connective tissue research, gene regulation in hair follicle

development and alopecia, skin tissue engineering and wound repair, as well as

the role of ECM components, laminin 8 and laminin 10 in the integrin signaling in

skin epidermal keratinocytes, dermal fibroblasts and blood vessel endothelial

cells.

VIII. In conclusion, the integumentary system includes the largest organ of the body

which is the skin. It contributes to homeostasis in four main ways in which I will

cover thoroughly in my final project. I will also discuss how age changes in the

dermis alter the integumentary system’s ability to contribute to homeostasis.
