PLAN 74 GAS CONTROL PANEL

(125 PSIG) FOR CHESTERTON 4400

GAS SEAL
PART NUMBER 908701

DESCRIPTION
The control panel is a self-contained stainless unit that provides filtered barrier gas to the
CHESTERTON 4400 Twin Hybrid gas seal. Gas enters the control panel through a ¼” NPT
inlet. The gas then passes through a coalescing filter for trapping liquids and particles. The
gas then flows to a flow meter with a scale of 0-5 SCFH. The gas flows to a gauge on the
panel which indicates the pressure. The pressure gauge supplied has a 0-200 psi scale. The
gas leaves the flow meter and travels to a check valve.

PREPARATION

1. Read these instructions thoroughly in full prior to installing this equipment.
2. Ensure that the equipment has not been damaged during shipment. Report any discrepancies.
3. Installing personnel should be familiar with the pump operation and pressure ranges of the particular stuffing box involved.
4. Check for the availability of a clean dry barrier gas supply. The barrier gas source header should be an inert gas
(nitrogen) which can flow up to 5 cubic feet per hour (CFH) /2.5 liters per minute (l/m) at a pressure of 30 psig (2 bar g)
over the maximum stuffing box pressure and no more than 150 psig (17 bar g).
5. Select the location for the control panel in the area of the pump with the CHESTERTON 4400 Twin Hybrid gas seal. The
panel has four mounting points that should be attached to the appropriate brackets.
6. Use clean stainless steel (1/4” min) tubing to connect to the panel and to the barrier gas connection on the
CHESTERTON 4400 gas seal. Ensure that the tubing is not crimped and the ends are free of burrs or that there are no
restrictions.

INSTALLATION

1.  Prior to installation, a pressure test of the panel should be performed to check for any leaks that may have occurred
during shipment.  To test the panel install a ½” NPT plug in the outlet coupling and apply pressure to the 1 /4” ball valve.
Use a sprayer with a soapy solution to check for air bubbles.

2.  The control panel can be mounted using the four mounting brackets.  Panel should be within four feet of the vertical
centerline of the seal chamber to the panel outlet.    Minimum turns and bends should be used to prevent pressure drops
and losses.

3.    Connect the ¼” NPT outlet port on the panel to the barrier supply port on the seal gland (marked “B”) with stainless
steel tubing.  Caution:  Prior to making the final connection to the seal gland blow gas through the tubing to ensure all dirt
and contamination, if any is removed.

4.    Optional Piping Connections

  A.  Pressure gauge may be connected to the seal gland port marked “BG” to monitor the barrier pressure.

B.  Seal gland flush port marked “F” on the seal housing may be used for environmental controls.  A pressure gauge
may be also installed into the flush line to monitor stuffing box pressure.

STARTUP

1.  Turn on the barrier gas supply to the control panel (150 psig maximum).  IMPORTANT: The barrier gas supply must be
on whenever the pump is pressurized or contains product.

2.  Take all necessary precautions and follow normal safety procedures before starting equipment.

MAINTENANCE

• Filter element should be checked each time the pump is serviced.
• The element should be changed each time the pump is serviced or once per year.
