Communication
It is the student’s responsibility to check for messages posted on MYCOURSES and their
e-mail for any new information. Students will need to provide a phone number where
they can be reached by their lab partners. These numbers should be listed in your lab
group’s field book. Not checking the message board on course homepage in
mycourses or your email will not be an excuse for being unprepared.

Accommodations

Course Prerequisites: Trigonometry. If you should need a waiver, please fill out the
Prerequisite Waiver form by end of week 1, and get department chair’s approval. See
department office assistant after class for form.

Course Objectives
- To acquaint the students with the principles of surveying.
- To introduce the concepts of note taking, differential leveling, traversing, topographic
mapping, earthwork calculations including several area computations methods.
- To introduce the students to the concepts of horizontal and vertical curve
computations. This includes simple horizontal, reverse, compound, and vertical curves.
- To acquaint the students with procedures for developing plan views, profile views, and
cross sections.

Class materials:
1. Students are required to bring a calculator and scale to all classes. Please refrain
from using your phones as calculators. Carry a calculator with you at all times.
2. The textbook is bulky and heavy and may remain at home.
3. It is highly recommended that the notes, which are posted on Mycourses, be
reviewed and that the corresponding text material be read prior to class each
day. Notes will be posted on a weekly basis. Not all slides will be provided.
Come to class to see them all! Examples will be no be posted.
 Homework (10%, 20 points each on 5 assignments)
1. Homework assignments will be posted on MYCOURSES by Wednesday and
due in the beginning of class the following Wednesday unless announced
otherwise. See schedule on page 6-7 for due dates. Typically, this is a weekly
event. There will be no formal announcement of the homework being
posted. It is the student’s responsibility to check mycourses.
2. All completed assignments should be neat and organized. Sketches,
assumptions, units, and references must be included, where
appropriate. SHOW ALL CALCULATIONS, UNLESS INSTRUCTED
OTHERWISE. A labeled drawing to scale, or if scale not provide, a
labeled sketch must be drawn for each problem. No sketch, lose half
credit.
3. Late Penalties: 100% - no assignments will be accepted late.
4. ***5 assignments only will be collected and graded.*** This will be a
random occurrence. No warning. All homework will be collected, but ONLY 5
homework assignments during the semester will be graded. If not in class,
homework will not be accepted since it will be late (see note #3 above).
Therefore, if you know you will not be in class, get assignment to a classmate for
possible submittal. Once class is over, homework is considered late.
5. Answers to all assignments will be posted on MY COURSES. Solutions are
available for review in my office by appointment. It will be the student’s
responsibility to review the solutions.
 Quizzes (worth 20 points each, total 10%)
1. Each week, a TIMED quiz will be posted on mycourses under “Quizzes”. The quiz
will open on Friday after lecture and close on first day back to class the following
week (not always a Monday) before lecture begins.
2. If you forget to take the quiz, there are no makeup quizzes. You will receive a
zero for that quiz. Put it on your calendar!! Look at schedule pages 6-7.
3. The quizzes will cover the material taught in the week that was just completed
and on the following week’s posted material. It will be necessary to review the
posted notes and write out the examples in class. The first week’s quiz will cover
material (including examples and this syllabus) from week 1 and the new material

(excluding examples) from week 2. Quiz in week 2 will cover material from week’s
2 and 3, and so on.
 Tests (total 80%)
1. 3 Mid-term tests @ 20% each. Dates on schedule.
2. Final Test @ 20%. Date to be determined. Not comprehensive.
3. All tests are closed book. Only calculators shall be permitted for calculations
during exams. All other electronic equipment (i.e. phones) must be stored.
4. The tests will NOT be returned to you. You may view your exam during office
hours. Your grade will be posted on mycourses. Students receiving a grade of
70% or less are required to meet with instructor to develop an action plan for
preparing for the next exam. Failure to do so within one week of grades being
posted will result in a permanent 10 point grade reduction on the exam.

** DDL POLICY**

Access & Security – Access to the lab will be by card swipe. All faculty, staff and
students in the CETEMS department will have swipe access to the lab. YOU must
request access through the following link:

Chris Brown (cjbsps@rit.edu) will be the point of contact for any issues with accessing
the lab. Additionally, a camera is in the room as an added security measure.

Printing – Printing in the lab will be managed using print quotas where each student
will be allowed to print a certain number of pages each semester. There are different
quotas for the laser printer (400 pages) and the plotter (20 plots) for each semester.
Please be respectful of lecturing instructors and print only when there is no formal
instruction being conducted. If uncertain, please ask.

Supplies – Cleaning supplies and extra paper will be kept in the supply cabinet in the
lab. Marilyn and Amy will have a key to the cabinet.

Reporting Issues and Making Requests – Any issues with the lab or requests for the lab
should be reported to the CAST Technical Support. Any requests can be submitted to
the CAST Technical Portal at http://cast-ticket.main.ad.rit.edu/portal Please be sure to
cc Professor Valentine (msvite@rit.edu) on all requests and reports.

Academic Dishonesty

Consequences of academic dishonesty: Any act of Academic Dishonesty will
incur the following possible consequences. After notifying and presenting the student
with evidence of such misconduct, the instructor has the full prerogative to assign an
"F" for the offense, or to assign an "F" for the entire course. The instructor will
inform and, if possible, meet with the student concerning the decision reached on the
"F" for the offense, or the "F" for the entire course. A student may be brought before
the Academic Conduct Committee of the College in which the alleged offense
occurred, and may face academic suspension or dismissal from the Institute. (See
D17.0, Academic Conduct and Appeals Procedures," and D18.0, "RIT Student
Conduct Process.")
b. CETEMS holds Academic Dishonesty to be a serious offense. Any act of
Academic Dishonesty will incur the following consequences:
i. For a first offense, the instructor will assign an "F" for the
assignment, or an "F" for the entire course.
ii. The Department Chair will prepare and present a CETEMS
Academic Dishonesty Letter to the student and request that the
student acknowledge the incident by signing the letter.
1. A copy will be given to the student.
2. A copy will be included in the student’s Department file and
if no further incidence of academic dishonest occurs prior to
certification for graduation, this copy will be permanently
removed from the student’s file and destroyed.
iii. For a repeat offense:
1. The student will be given an grade of F for the course
2. The student will be brought before the CAST Academic
Conduct Committee and may face academic suspension or
dismissal from the Institute.
