As a new teacher, most ethical and responsible behavior might seem like common
sense. However it is important to review what professionalism might look like:

1. Dedicated/motivated/inspired and ethically responsible


2. Dressing appropriately for the job
3. Having a positive attitude and behavior towards students and colleagues
4. Collaborating with your colleagues
5. Seeking professional development

1. Dedication:
a. Consistently offer the same hours to help
students outside of class
b. Giving yourself a work-life balance
2. Motivation:
a. Teaching for the sake of the students
education, not just to recite the subject material
3. Ethics:
a. Following through with your classroom rules
and expectations
b. Respecting different student’s perspectives
4. Inspiration:
a. Going above and beyond the minimum
curriculum standards
Head = Ethics
Everything we say and do should be thought
out with ethics in mind

Heart = Inspiration
Inspiration can only come from the passion in
our hearts to teach

Hands = Dedication
Dedication can only come from working hard
and the willingness to get our hands dirty

Feet = Motivation
One foot in front of the other can help us to
carry on

● Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the
job and grade level you teach!
○ Females:
■ Avoid too short of a skirt/dress
and revealing tops
■ Plain colored/simple patterned
tops
○ Males:
■ Dress pants + polo/button-down
shirt
■ Tie or jacket
● Always check with your school’s dress
code policy and when in doubt, just ask!

Towards Your Students:

● Act as a role model and not as a friend


● Give constructive feedback and respect all student’s different perspectives
● Treat all students equally and fair (no favoritism)
● Show empathy towards your students!

Towards Your Colleagues:

● Contribute to a positive work environment


○ Avoid gossip
● Do not inappropriately share confidential information about students
● Act respectfully and listen to other teacher’s input or advise

● Share various teaching strategies:
○ From how to handle challenging student
behavior to parent-teacher relationships
● Discuss any issues or confusions about the
subject curriculum with teachers in the same
department
○ As a new teacher:
■ always ask questions on how to teach
any concepts you might find
challenging!
■ Don’t be afraid to bring new ideas to
the table!
● Collaborate! Give and receive advice about
different classroom situations

● Regularly perform self-evaluations
● Ask colleagues questions (don’t be
intimidated/afraid as new teacher)!
● Seek training for any new classroom
technologies or emerging trends in your
subject area
○ Conferences can range from teaching
strategies to include various types of
student learners to reviewing difficult
subject specific curriculum
○ Ask colleagues which training
conferences they go to/benefit from
