Bill,
Below references is from 2012 Copyright NEC Handbook. It discusses about wiring methods including for industrial
establishments. The essence is here and it is just a matter of doing the right construction execution. NEC also discusses
the types of cables that can be used and basically it should be in a form of cable with a fire retardant insulated wires for
dry and wet (moisture) applications. The cables that we typically use already have these characteristics.
We agree that it should be verified with the design institute of a specific location if it will be permitted or not. If it gets
permitted then we can do possibly avoid cost for cable tray, associated sets of support, the bare grounding wire, other
materials and the associated labor.
In regards to the weight or mass issue, well, logically we are eliminating a bigger amount of weight since the above
mentioned materials will be gone as part of the roof or purlin load.

What kind of cable are you using and how do you get through or around the columns along the way. How do you
protect the cable and what type of cable are you using? For large feeders where parallel conductors are used they
must run together, how will that be done using this strategy? Is a purlin a raceway or approved method used to
distribute wire by the electrical code or building code? What level of exposure to damage will the cable be exposed
to by doing this type of installation and do you view this as a safe installation?
My first impression is does not meet most electrical installation codes. I would recommend you get detailed
permission from the design institute before wasting too much time with this idea.
Forgot to send this after our discussion last week. Not aligned to this approach for distribution.

Bill & Colleagues,
We would like to check for your perspectives about electrical distribution. Basically, we were asked to find opportunities
on how we can reduce cost. A suggestion that got raised is to utilize the Building Girt and Purlin as raceway for the
electrical feeders of building electrical (i.e. lighting and convenience outlets). Through this approach we may:
1. Eliminate >90% of raceway related to building power supply
2. Wires/Cables can be pre‐installed
3. Greatly reduce capital (construction equipment, material and labor)
In order to avoid the risk of conflict between a fastener and the cable, the cables will be placed at the middle. The girt
and/or purlin will be labeled for proper identification.
Regards,
Mike

Hi Janice, Mike,
Please find enclosed herewith PPT’s for Initializing of Sprinkler& Electrical cable concept for IC.
This can be modularized as per Steel Modules assembly, I have also included for the study of eliminating support from
roof beam for 2x2 Grid.
We can eliminate this & reduce the Tonnage of Steel Building.
Savings shall be on Schedule, Cost of materials, work man hours & Lifting Equipments.
Some slides has Animation please view in enlarge mode & click mouse.
Thanks & Regards,
