Sua vida profissional é extensa: se tornou professor em arquitetura na Universidade da
Califórnia em Berkeley. Fundou seu próprio instituto, o Center for Environmental
Structure, onde realizou suas pesquisas. Também trabalhou como arquiteto em projetos
sociais, construindo moradias adaptadas ao local e usuários no Peru e no México. Essa
experiência rendeu dois livros sobre o tema, Houses Generated by Patterns
(ALEXANDER et al., 1969) e The Production of Houses (ALEXANDER et al., 1985).

4. PRODUÇÃO
Seu livro mais famoso é sobre o conceito da linguagem dos padrões. Para ele,
os padrões são um conjunto de problema-solução que pertencem a um imaginário
coletivo e que pode ser usado para o projeto de novos artefatos. Esses padrões não
podem ser desenvolvidos de uma vez só, mas pacientemente criados pela comunidade
que é capaz de gerar esses padrões (ALEXANDER, 2001).

Burdek (2006) resume sua metodologia como um problema que pode ser
estruturado através da definição do contexto, de modo que seu desenvolvimento será
feito de modo hierárquico. Devido ao seu background em matemática, o modelo Unself-
conscious and self-conscious design tem fortes relações com as ciências formais da
matemática e da lógica. O processo busca a decomposição dos problemas em seus
menores componentes e reagrupamento destes em três níveis [DUBBERLY 2004]: 1.
No mundo real; 2. No mundo real já com uma figura mental; e, 3. No mundo real já com
uma figura mental formalizada.

6. CONSIDERAÇÕES
Alexander foi muito importante no seu contexto histórico onde existia uma
tentativa de formalizar a área do design e estabelecê-la como campo metodológico e
uma área de estudos relevante no mundo. Seu pioneirismo está alinhado com outros
teóricos do seu tempo como Hall (1962), Asimow (1962), Archer (1965) e Jones (1970)
onde todos, em diferentes níveis, basearam-se em abordagens sistêmicas, influenciados
pela NASA (Lacerda, 2012). A tentativa de apresentar o design como algo que pode ser
cientificado e sistematizado era inovadora até então e essa vontade abriu caminhos
para que o design se desenvolvesse e recebesse mais importância no contexto
industrial.
