'Lizard Point 28-29 April 2018
I had been keen to do this walk for a number of years, but for a variety of reasons the opportunities to walk it had
always evaded me. One solution was to lead it myself. Everyone who I spoke to who had done the walk gave it a
very high recommendation but also said that getting there was not an easy 'walk in the park'. Thanks to John B
and Dave K for maps, John S for walk notes, Gerry B for a GPS pre-loaded with a walk track, and John B for
doing a pre-walk with me, I felt sufficiently confident that I could lead a group to the Point and back over two days
without getting lost or losing anyone.
Noelene, Helen and I met Sandy at Sunnybank Hills and we made our way to Boonah where we met Aileen and
Bert for a heart starter coffee. We also met Aileen's shiny brand new Isuzu, which made me wonder what the
lantana thickets might do to it along the vehicle track at
Teviot Gap. Not to worry, Aileen had no fears about
scratches on the duco, so we drove to the walk start and
got underway. Whilst doing our final pack preparation, we
redirected a group of five young people onto the correct
path to Mt Superbus. They were well prepared for a steep
hot climb dressed in T-shirts, shorts and light sneakers.
At least one of them had a water bottle!
Helen did an admirable job of taking the lead position for
our group and followed the pink tape all the way up the
middle ridge to Mt Roberts saddle. The ridge provides a
steady gradient with reasonably open walking under a
rainforest canopy, some vines, no lantana, and just a
couple of rocky sections that require more care. I
managed to lead the entire walk from the tail end Charlie
position. I provided alerts when I felt we were within 300
metres of an objective, but my approach lost credibility
when it seemed that everything was 300 metres away! Bert and Noelene ascend Mt Roberts Photo: MH
