Goomburra base camp 9-12 June 2018
A brave group of souls chose to defy the cold weather forecast and join Dave & Lynn Kenrick for a base camp
experience in the seductively tranquil surrounds of Goomburra. The forecast was accurate as temperature
dropped to the low single digits most nights. It was certainly brisk in a tent – apparently the caravan was a lot
more comfy. However the days gradually warmed up. Dave, Lynn and John H arrived first and set up camp.
Sandy and I joined them on Monday to find that earlier that day they had done a warm up walk on the Ridge Trail.
Keen to make the most of the last hour or so of sunlight,
Sandy and I drove up along Lookout Road to the
Araucaria Falls walk. This is a short 3.6km return walk
that gently descends through subtropical rainforest and
several fern gardens. There is evidence of previous
logging activity with some large stumps all that remains
of previous forest giants. The path meanders down to a
small creek. The rock slabs and pools here create a
delightful scene and it would make an ideal place for a
lunch stop (see page 1). However we were keeping a
careful watch on how much remaining light we had, so
we moved on. The path abruptly steepens as it zig zags
down and requires some care as it approaches the base
of the falls. Recent rain ensured that there was a
reasonable flow of water over the falls and into a large
pool. Unusually Sandy chose not to have a swim, though
it did look a bit chilly. Appropriately the falls are flanked
by several tall hoop pines. After photos we returned along the path, and made good time back to the car well
before the light failed. On the road back to the campground we wondered at the presence of a herd of cattle in the
National Park.
On Tuesday morning Dave, Sandy and I again
drove up Lookout Road to the start of the
Winder Track. This is a straightforward 12km
return walk that follows a 4WD track along a
ridge that turns north from the Great Divide.
Dave recalled several walks that lead off from
this route and we located the tapes that
indicated their departure points. Much of the
walk passes through subtropical rainforest or
vine forest, though in a couple of places the
forest opens up to permit spectacular views east
towards Mt Castle. The road undulates as it
passes over a couple of knolls, gradually losing
height towards the end of the track. At this point
it widens into a grassy clearing in the middle of
which is located the winder – a large relic of
abandoned logging equipment (page 4). On a
warm sunny afternoon this is a fine place to
have a rest, so we enjoyed a relaxed lunch.
Refreshed after the break, we decided to
explore a little further along the ridge. The driveable road ends at the winder where it is blocked off by a NP sign.
Beyond this point it is overgrown with vine forest but the route of the original road can be discerned. A pad, well
marked with black and yellow tape, runs roughly parallel to the old road. Although we followed this pad for some
time we were unable to locate the point at which the road originally descended into the valley. With about two
hours of sunlight remaining we decided to turn around and retrace our steps back to the car. After a welcome
cuppa, Sandy and I headed home, leaving Dave & Lynn to enjoy the peace of Goomburra valley.
Thanks Dave for leading this base camp, and Lynn, John H and Sandy for your enjoyable company. Michael H
