ii) Precautions observed during harvesting of tomatoes
- Harvest after 3-4 months after transplanting depending on the variety
- Avoid harvesting immature green fruits
- Avoid the fruit together with stalk and leaves
- Avoid bruising the fruits
- Put the harvested fruits in suitable containers e.g. bucket, paper bag, etc.
- Separate the diseased, undersize, pest-infected from the rest. (3 Marks)
b) Factors that determine choice of implements and tools for primary cultivation
- Slope of land / topography: In sloppy areas a farmer cannot use tractor drawn
implements e.g. disc plough, mouldboard plough because it is difficult for tractors to
move.
- Capital available; tractor drawn implements are more expensive than hand tools
- Skills of operator; tractor drawn implements require more skills than hand tools.
- Availability of the implement or tool; a farmer can only use a tool or implement which
is readily available
- Type of soil; hand soils / with hard pans / wet sticky soils require deep cutting tools /
implements
- Presence of perennial weeds; fields with perennial weeds require implements that will
uproot the weeds
- Depth of cultivation required / Crop to be planted; deep rooted crops require deep
cutting implements, shallow rooted crops require shallow cutting implements
- Availability of source of power; a suitable source of power to operate the implement /
tool should be available to enable it perform the work.
