SCENARIO

You have recently started a new role with an established engineering

company and are required to demonstrate understanding of waves and
vectors as part of your probationary period. The two tasks that follow have
been given by your line manager to assess your knowledge in each area.

Task I 41 aly trola) 12 lau !tf-'
A support beam is subjected to vibrations along its length, emanating from
two machines situated at opposite ends of the beam. The displacement
caused by the vibrations can be modelled by the following equations:
t Znt,
t: 3.75 sin | 100nf
\
*
^, )
xz:
' 4.4zsin (rooot - -)
..F.or each wave:
\ 5/
- State the amplitude, phase angle, frequency (in Hz) and periodic time
of each of these waves.
When both machines are switched on, how many seconds does it take
for each machine to produce its maximum displacement?
- At what time does each vibration first reach a displacement of -2mm?
- Using compound angle formulae express each wave in the form
,4 sin 100nt + B cos 100nf, where A and B are numbers to be found"
- Using the above express .r1 + x, in a similar format. Convert this-
expression into the form R sin(100nt * a).
- Using appropriate spreadsheet software complete the following:

Complete the above table.

b) Plot the graphs of x, and x, on the same axes using any suitable
computer package. Extend your table to includ e x7 + x, dnd plot this
graph on the same axes. State the amplitude and frequency of this
new wave.
c) Compare your answers from part b to those gained when gaining the
equation of the waveform analytically. What conclusions can be drawn
about the new wave and the methods used?

Task 2

A pipeline is to be fitter under a road, the r-direction points East, the y-

direction points North, and the z-direction is vertical. The pipeline consists of
a straight section AB directly under the road and another straight section BC
which is connected to the first. All lengths are in metres.

A has co-ordinates (0, -40,0)

B has co-ordinates (40,0, -20)
C has co-ordinates (a,b,0)

- Calculate the distance AB.

- The section BC is to be drilled in the direction of the vector 3i+4i +k.
Find the angle between sections AB and BC.
- Write down the vector equation of the line BC and hence find a and b.

SCBNARIO

You have recently started a new role with an established engineering

company and are required to demonstrate understanding of calculus as part
of your probationary period. The two tasks that follow have been given by
your line manager to assess your knowledge in the areas of differentiation
and integration respectively.

Task 1

Produce a short report detailing the solutions to each of the following

problems using differential calculus. You should show all relevant working
out.

- The amount of fuel in a tank decreases using the following model:

Identify the initiat votume

"rori"lli
il:;l-, provide an expression for
the rate of change of fuel and calculate the rate at the time when
t=2seconds.
- A spring system is set to oscillate. Its displacement is given by the
following expression:
x - L.5 sin(3t + 0.5)
Provide expressions for both the velocity and acceleration of the
oscillations.
- Find the rate of change of the function below when x : 0.2:
2
!=F-ln3x*5
- A sheet of metal with dimensions 25mX15m is to be turned into a
lidless box by cutting squares out of the corners as below:

Calculate the maximum possible volume of the box when created

using this method.

A cylinder is to have volume 180cm3, calculate the height and radius

required to minimise the surface area and hence calculate the surface
area of the cylinder.

Task 2

Produce a short report detailing the solutions to each of the following

problems using integral calculus. You should show all relevant working out.

- The velocity of a particle is given by the equation u = 6tz - 4t +3.

Given that when that when t=1the object has travelled 4m, use
integration to find an expression for the displacement of the object.
Hence calculate the displacement after 5 seconds.
- A force is represented by the equation
r'-1+s
x
Use integration to find the work done if the object is pushed a distance
of 10 metres.
- A population of bacteria are observed to follow the differential
equation'
y:3p, t=o,p-40
dt
Where P is the population and t is the time in minutes.
Find an expression for the population of the bacteria in terms of t.
Additionally, make a prediction of the population after 20 minutes.
- The rate of decay of a radioactive chemical substance is shown to be:
dA3 t-20A:1.013
dt=-t,
Where A is the amount of substance and t is the time taken. Find an
expression for the amount of substance at any given time and then
find the time when the amount of substance has reached 0.5
