How to stop home fires before they start

A fire at home can occur in just about any room of
the house and even outdoors. While one can't account
for natural disasters or other unforseen problems, there
are many steps homeowners can take to prevent fires.
• Check the cords on all appliances and electronics.
Replace any frayed or damaged cords or wires.
• Do not overload outlets or rely heavily on multi-
plug power strips.
• Keep cords out of the reach of children and pets.
• When cooking in the kitchen, always be present
while food is on the stove or in the oven. Flare-ups can
occur at a moment's notice.
• Turn pot handles so that children can't reach them
and pull them over, risking burns.
• Be sure appliance vents have room to "breathe."
• Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly.
• Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to block
embers.

Most homeowners take trees for granted. Andy

Certified Arborist states that “although trees are con-
siderably hardier than grass, flowers and shrubs they

conditions, drought, insects and the spontaneous
spread of disease. Properly trimmed trees are more
likely to endure these hardships. The same homeown-
ers who underestimate the importance of tree service

There are three pillars of tree service:
1. Tree trimming: Proper tree trimming involves
harnesses and proper climbing techniques, not to
mention the knowledge on what and how much to
trim. Very few homeowners have the prerequisite
knowledge to trim their own trees.
2. Tree removal: The behavior of a falling tree can
be erratic and tree removal should only be done by
experienced and insured professionals. Ask if the
company is certified by the International Society of
Arborists, whether the company has liability insur-
ance and has current workers’ compensation cover-
age.
3. Treating an ailing tree: Dead limbs, tree leaning,
the presence of fungus or mushrooms or decaying
bark or unusual root patterns are all possible symp-
toms of an ailing tree. Only a certified arborist can tell
you for certain what the problem is.

Embrace autumn fruits and vegetables

Summertime may seem the ideal time for harvesting
fruits and vegetables, but there are plenty of crops that
come into season in autumn that can make delicious
additions to daily diet. Using seasonal crops eliminates
the need for importing produce, helping the environ-
ment as a result.
So what produce is prime for picking come
September through November? Here’s a look at the
items to pick for fall menu planning.
FRUIT
Apples: Early autumn is prime season for apple pick-
ing. Take to the orchards and choose favorite varieties
among the red-, yellow- and green-hued options.
Blueberries: Though widely considered a summer-
time fruit, blueberries are often in season through
September. Get them while they last.
Blackberries: Those who live in rural areas may find
blackberries growing wild, just waiting to be picked.
Use shallow boxes instead of bags so that blackberries
do not get crushed during transport. Expect wild black-
berries to be smaller than commercially cultivated
ones.
Figs: Fig trees offer an abundance of sweet delights
this time of year. For individuals lucky to have a fig tree
in the yard, simply go out and pluck a handful of figs
for a fiber-filled treat.
Grapes: Grapes are available at the supermarket year-
round, but they’re in their prime during the autumn
season.
Pears: This is another tree-grown fruit that comes
into season in the fall. Put pears, blackberries and
apples together to make a tasty crisp dessert or fresh
pie.
VEGETABLES
Broccoli: Harvest broccoli in the autumn and enjoy a
healthy addition to salads, casseroles and pasta.
Research shows that broccoli loses much of its nutri-
tional value when microwaved, so it’s best when light-
ly steamed.
Cabbage: Cabbage is often considered an autumn
vegetable, although it is routinely available year-round.
Perhaps that’s because of the ornamental cabbage plants
that are cool-weather lovers. Make soups or a late-sea-
son slaw with fresh cabbage.
Corn: Perhaps no vegetable is more synonymous
with autumn than corn. Sweet corn is harvested every
fall and is abundant at roadside vendors or at the local
store.
Eggplant: Eggplant is available through September in
many areas. A main component of the dish ratatouille,
eggplant is also ideal in Italian meals or as part of veg-
etarian sandwiches.
Carrots: Autumn-harvested carrots have a deeper fla-
vor than spring varieties.
Mushrooms: Now is the time to harvest wild mush-
rooms. However, it may be safer to choose among the
many at the supermarket or local farmer.
Pumpkins: Of course pumpkins are known to be fall
vegetables. While they are often carved, the flesh can be
used in salads, soups and in baked goods.
Radishes: This vegetable is often available through
October and can be served in salads or baked with other
dishes.

How going green can help you save dollars and sen$e

Do you actually know what a “green product”
means? Everywhere you look the advertising is catering
to environmentally conscious consumers.
I think most will agree that the word “Green,” when
used to describe a product on the market, has taken on
the connotation of an environmental political market-
ing adjective. In other words, the manufacturers and
distributors of these products are appealing to the envi-
ronmentally astute consumer. Consequently, this is
causing much confusion in the market place and may
be hurting products that are not advertised as being
green.
Today, media advertising is quick to call a product
“green.” But what does the manufacturer mean when
labeling a product “green”? Some folks believe that the
materials used in the product are rapidly renewable
materials such as bamboo, cork, woods, grasses, etc.
Others believe that the products may be biodegradable
and that their substance should break down into carbon
dioxide, water and natural materials that do not harm
the ecosystem. Still others believe that any energy effi-
cient product is a green product. Less energy usage in a
home or business seems to be high on the list of green
products. Since there is no governing body that polices
the green marketing arena, the Consumer’s Union is
starting to evaluate environmental labels and looking at
the certification organizations that may be developing
these labels.
I asked my daughter to describe a green product and
she said that the word implies that a product is doing
something good to, or for, the environment and it uses
less energy by being energy efficient, thus saving
money on monthly utility bills. She also said that the
factory where the product is manufactured may be a
site that is certified as being green or LEED rated. If all
consumers were so knowledgeable that about being
green, this article would not be necessary. However,
since most consumers are left to their best judgment
when trying to decide which product or appliance is
green, this article will try to explain why heating your
home with a hydronic heating system is as green as it
gets!
• First, lets looks at the medium used in moving the
heat throughout the home; it is water, and not moving
air. The water is heated in a high efficiency boiler
(many of which have efficiencies up to 98 percent) and
a pump pushes the hot water throughout the home or
business to the various delivery systems. This system
may consist of radiant heat (pipes in the floor, ceiling,
walls, driveways), radiators, and/or baseboard units.
• ENERGYSTAR® is recognized by most Americans
and signifies that the product is one of 35 categories
and has been given the ENERGYSTAR(R) product label.
• The pumps and valves that are used throughout
the home to carry the hot water to all zones use energy,
which also adds to the efficiency ratio. The hot water
delivery system is hygienic and does not distribute par-
ticulates, dust and mites.
• The fuel that is being used by the systems can be
oil, natural gas, propane or electricity. If natural gas is
used, there is only one carbon footprint. This is because

only one burner is necessary to heat the home and to
heat the potable water. Across the United States, most
homes have two burners: one for the hot water heater
and another for the furnace. Hydronic heating systems
only require one and with the new technology today,
some are using modulating burners that modulate
smoothly instead of simply turning on and off. During
the heating season they stay on and modulate from low
to high when the heat is called for, thus saving money.
• Now let’s look at the manufacturing plants where
the heating systems are made. Some of the companies
are now LEED certified, indicating this system was
developed by the U.S. Green Building Council for rat-
ing the environmental advantages in commercial struc-
tures. Some of the corporate employees are also certi-
fied as an LEED rater.
• With the introduction of LEED, Green Homes and
Green Buildings, there is an up-front premium to pay
for the home. Because of the various levels of each rat-
ing system, it is difficult to compare a typical home
built to today’s building codes and a “totally green
home.” Some estimates range between $2,000 and
$10,000 but can go higher because of the volatility of
the costs of materials. However, the savings from the
energy efficiency of the home shell, windows, insula-
tion and appliances will more than recoup that cost
over the life of the home. In their Naturally Green —
Green Builder Program, the American Gas Association
recognizes the high efficiencies of hydronic heating
systems and credits the builder and homeowner with
higher points for certification as a Natural Gas Green
Home.
The environmental movement has taken hold in the
U.S. and consumers have the opportunity to buy prod-
ucts that are truly green by the standards that exist
today. They now have the educational resources to
assist them in determining what level of green is best
for their pocketbook and lifestyle.

Furniture arranging 101

When presented with an empty room in a new
home or apartment, most people are a bit apprehen-
sive about where to start. It can be difficult to picture
where to place a sofa or how to arrange a chaise
lounge.
Although interior decorators may seem to have the
knack for knowing where to place furniture, arranging
items that are already owned or new furniture is
something just about anyone can master.
Before furniture can be placed, certain questions
should be answered and room layouts examined.
Consider the following:
• Is the room used to travel through to another
room? If so, a pathway will need to be left so that
walking unhindered is possible.
• Where are the doors and windows located?
Furniture should not be placed where it can interfere
with a door being opened fully or block too much
light.
• How is the room used? For example, furniture
shouldn’t be placed in a family room so that individ-
uals constantly have to walk past the television and
block watchers’ views. If a room is used as a sitting
space, furniture should be geared around bookshelves
or a fireplace.
• What space is available? Too much furniture in a
room can create the appearance of clutter. It can also
make maneuvering around the room difficult. Keep
furniture scale and quantity in mind when decorat-
ing. It may be wise to remove some pieces if the room
is overrun with items.
Once the general idea of where furniture will be
placed is decided, it helps to take measurements to
ensure everything will fit. There’s little point hefting
around heavy furniture only to move it back to its
starting position if something doesn’t fit correctly.
Making a reduced-scale model of the room and mov-
ing paper cut-outs of the furniture is much easier on
the back than moving the furniture itself. There also
is software that can be installed on the computer that
enables homeowners to see how furniture will look
once arranged.
Now that the time has come to place the furniture,
follow these guidelines.
Professional decorators know how to arrange furniture,
and so can you.
• Coffee tables or ottomans should be set 14 to 18
inches away from the couch. Adjust accordingly to
meet the needs of homeowners.
• Televisions should be placed at a distance three-
times the size of the screen. However, some of the
very-large televisions will simply have to be placed
closer. Otherwise they could very well be in the next
room.
• The average adult requires 20 inches of breathing
room for dining room chairs. Allow an additional 16
inches of room for pushing the chairs out to get up
from the seat.
• Make sure the edge of a bed is at least 24 inches
away from a wall so that sleepers can enter and exit
the bed comfortably.
There are some other tips to keep in mind when
arranging furniture.
• Consider the safety of young children. Choose
furniture that doesn’t have sharp edges or temporari-
ly cover these edges.
• Figure out the focal point of the room (a fireplace
or picture window) and arrange furniture to comple-
ment, not block, this feature.
• Protect floors and walls when moving furniture.
• Enlist the help of strong individuals to move fur-
niture. Don’t risk injury by doing it alone.
