Course Description:
This is an 11th grade English class with a strong emphasis on American literature. Ample
opportunity is provided for students to study major authors, periods, and genres. Students will
be encouraged to make connections to the world in which they live by examining both fiction
and non-fiction works from both past and present. Students receive SAT prep in the form of
vocabulary and reading exercises. A strong emphasis is placed on the improvement of writing
skills. Students will be given numerous writing opportunities that will include, but not be limited
to, a research paper and persuasive essay.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 2.

School-wide Expectations:
Expectation 2: Communication: C. Writing Expectation 5: A. Cultural Awareness

Grading:

Grades are weighted as follows:

Writing Assignments/Projects: 35% of your grade

Tests: 30% of your grade

Quizzes: 20% of your grade

Homework/Classwork/Participation: 15% of your grade

Due dates for essays, projects, and long-term assignments will be clearly marked; one full grade will be
deducted for each day an assignment is late. For example, if you received a B on your essay but were
late one day, your grade then becomes a C.

Classroom Expectations:

● Follow all school wide rules while in class.

● Be appropriately seated when the bell rings to begin class.
● You will be expected to come to class every day prepared to work. Tasks will vary from
discussing a reading assignment from the day before, or reviewing a homework assignment, to
working through the writing process.
● You will be given some time in the computer lab or library to work on your long-term writing
assignments; this time should be used wisely. Failure to make good use of your time will result
in consequences, most notably a worse off final product.
● Turn in work exactly when it is due, NOT after the bell rings. All printing must occur prior to the
bell, otherwise the assignment is considered late.
● You will need a method of saving your work (both finished and unfinished). This might be a
memory stick or flash drive, google docs, dropbox, etc. You will also benefit from having a binder
with loose lined paper/notebook ,and folder for handouts and notes.
● Have no cell phone or other distracting device visible at all after entering the classroom. The
only exception is when one has been officially made. If I see it, you get one warning to make it
disappear. If I see it again, I take it and you may pick it up at 2:05.
● Please be mindful of when it is appropriate to ask to leave the room. Keep trips outside of the
classroom short. Make it a priority to stop at the bathroom during passing time or before
returning from lunch.
● No rude comments or other inappropriate behaviors in class. You must show respect to
everyone in this room.
● Be prepared for class when the bell rings: writing implement, notebook, notes, text, handouts.
