INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nowadays, calamities are not expected. This phenomenon may occur anytime and

anywhere. Calamities are still increasing in number of occurrence that in present time, they occur

very often. Calamities like typhoon and floods due to heavy rain occur very often and this events

leave stock water anywhere.

Mosquitoes love this because they reproduce in the stock and dirty water. And with that,

dengue cases are abundant. Dengue cases may cause death. The society, need now something

that will stop dengue cases from increasing. And probably it is a mosquito repellant.

Repellents for mosquitoes are now anywhere they may come in aerosols or maybe in

“katols”, but are you sure this is safe for you. The society is now in search for new plants that

will help in repelling mosquito causing dengue. Some of these are Lanzones and Atis.

Based from the other researches, lanzones has chemical substances that are medicinally

and industrially useful. Its peel can serves as a mosquito repellant because of its aromatic smell.

In atis, it serves a lot of purposes to human health. The Government Health Researchers found

extracts for the formulation of an effective anti-mosquito repellant.

The researches decided to create “Lanzatis Candle”. It is compose of two main

ingredients which are lanzones and atis. These two ingredients are used as the mosquito repellant

that will give off only its scent when the candle is burn. Some research says that the scent of

these ingredients will repel the mosquito away.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study focuses on the effectiveness of the candle, which contains lanzones peel and

atis leaf, as a mosquito repellant. This study aims to answer the following:

1. What are the advantages of the lanzatis candle from the commercial ones according to its

uses?

2. Is there a significant difference between the lanzatis candle and the commercial ones?

3. What are the significant differences of the Lanzatis Candle from the commercial ones?

STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

The said candle is effective as a mosquito repellant because it contain lanzones peel and atis

leaf which is an effective mosquito repellant.

1. The Lanzatis candle will have an advantage from the commercial ones.

2. There is a significant difference between Lanzatis Candle and the commercial ones.

3. The lanzatis candle is a candle that repels mosquitoes.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Candle is a good source of light. But it can also be used as a repellant. With that

conclusion, a product called Lanzatis candle was made. This product aims to help the following

individuals in different ways.

Farmers- if the product is commercialized to the community, it will be in demand to the people

and it may increase the production of product.

Researchers- this will help improve their succeeding researches. In a way that this research can

be a basis for other related researches about mosquito repellant.

Students- this study may help them for their future research. This can also be their basis in doing

their project such as science investigatory project.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study only focuses on the effects of a candle made from lanzones peel and atis leaf

as a mosquito repellant. To test it, a sample of mosquito is observed inside a container for days to

prove that the study is effective.

The study did not focus on a specific type of mosquito. Thus the researchers are not

certain if there is a species of mosquito that have no effect if applied.

Review of Related Literature and studies

Related Literature

The problem about dengue mosquitoes still goes on despite all the government efforts.

Lanzones peel can help reduce the incident of dengue because it acts as mosquito repellant like

atis, citronella and madre de cacao.Lanzones peels can be dried and burned slowly to produce a

pleasant smell that drive away mosquitoes1.

According to DOST (PCHRD)2 Dengue is a deadly disease. All possible means of

protection should be considered. Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Some schools required

the student to wear long upper and lower body clothes like jogging pants and long sleeves. The

last is the use of mosquito repellant, either natural or commercially prepared. Atis can be used as

mosquito repellant. Other natural repellants are citronella, madre de cacao and lanzones.

According to BPI3, atis is a favorite fruit of the Filipinos. It is very refreshing and may be

eaten raw or made into an excellent ice cream. According to Burkill4 the fermented fruit seems to

be used in the West Indies to make a kind of cider. Sanyal and Ghose5 reported, the leaves, the

unripe fruit, and the seeds (which contain acrid principle) possess vermicidal and insecticidal

properties. The crushed seeds, in a paste with water, are applied to the scalp to destroy lice. The

same is used as an abortifacient if applied to the uteri in pregnant women. The bruised leaves,

with salt, make a good cataplasm to induce suppuration. The fresh leaves crushed between the

fingers and applied to the nostrils cut shorts fits and fainting. The ripe fruit, bruised and mixed

with salt, is applied as a maturant to malignant tumors to hasten suppuration. The unripe fruit is

astringent, and is given in diarrhea, dysentery and atonic dyspepsia.

According to PCHRD6 the Atis is used as Lotion Mosquito Repellent. It was formulated

using the extracts of Atis (Anona squamosa) leaves mixed with other locally available materials.

It uses a washable, mineral oil – based formulation and its biodegradable since, it is derived from

advantage against other well known repellents which are chemical based in formulation.

The Atis Lotion is composed of: 10.125% mineral oil, 1.02% Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose,

9% Propylene Glycol, 0.22% Methyl Paraben, 0.135% Propyl Paraben, 70% water, and 10%

plant extract.

Related Studies

Parañaque High School7 in their study “COIL MADE FROM LANZONES PEELINGS”

used lanzones as a mosquito coil. The coil is a successful product for it is an effective repellent

for mosquito due to its content produces odor in which the mosquito does not like. Although it

appears to be smoke because of its characteristic as dried lanzones peelings, the smell of it is

pleasant and is not irritating when smelled.

In the study of Rajdeep Laha8 of Calcutta Business School, the first truly effective active

ingredient used in mosquito repellents was citronella oil. This material is an herbal extract

derived from the citronella plant, an Asian grass. While citronella had been used for centuries for

medicinal purposes, its repellence was only accidentally discovered in 1901, when it was used as

a hairdressing fragrance. Since citronella oil is a fragrant material, it is thought that the chemical

terpenes of which it is composed are responsible for its repellent activity. Citronella oil does

repel mosquitos, but it has certain characteristics which limit its effectiveness.
In the study, Herbal Mosquito Repellent of the Philippine Council for Health Research

and Development (PCHRD) 9, according to them, the atis lotion mosquito repellent was created

using the extracts of atis leaves mixed with other locally accessible materials. According to

PCHRD, the atis lotion is made of 10.125 percent mineral oil, 1.02 percent sodium

carboxymethyl cellulose, nine percent propylene glycol, 0.22 percent methyl paraben, 0.135

percent propyl paraben, 70 percent water, and 10 percent plant extract.Atis leaves, unripe fruit,

and the seeds of atis (Anona squamosa) contain vermicidal and insecticidal properties. It is an

inexpensive alternative in avoiding mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and filariasis.

The atis lotion mosquito repellent is a personal care product used in preventing mosquito bites

which cause itchiness, inflammation and discomfort to individuals, the PCHRD said.

In a study Evaluation of Herbal Essential oil against Mosquitoes by the Department of

Plant Production Technology and Faculty of Agricultural Technology in Bangkok Thailand

affirmed that lemon grass indeed contains organic repellents against mosquitoes. In a laboratory

experiment, volunteers were instructed to apply oil extracts from different target crops including

lemon grass on one of their arms, while the other was untreated (control). Both hands were

inserted in a cage containing 250 nulliparous female mosquitoes ageing 5-7 day old. Mosquitoes

were observed in terms movements and behaviors. Results showed that oil extracts from lemon

grass, peppermint, eucalyptus, citronella, and cloves were effective to repel both dengue and

malaria mosquitoes. However, the repellent effects of these oil extracts do not last longer

compare to synthetic chemicals, thus, further study to improve its formulation and efficacy is

needed.
Methodology

Materials/ Equipment:

These are the materials we will use for our experiment set-up:

Lanzatis Candle- act as the mosquito repellant

 Commercial Candle- will be use to observe the effect of mosquito in this kind of candle

compare to the Lanzatis Candle.

 Galvanized Iron Roofing – will act as roof for our set-up to avoid the mosquito from

escaping.

 Cardboard (wood)- will act as the base and divider to the set-up for us to determine if the

mosquito will go to the part where it is away from the Lanzatis Candle or the Lanzatis

Candle won’t have any effect to the mosquito.

 Mosquito Net – will act as the wall for our set-up for us to be able to see the behavior of

the mosquito under the experiment.

 Stick – will act as the support for our set- up to stand.

Treatment/ General Procedure:

Prepare a set-up to start the experiment then put the larvae of the mosquito inside the set-up

and wait for a few days to grow it into a fully grown mosquito. When the mosquito is fully

grown and ready for the experiment, immediately put the Lanzatis and commercial candle to

avoid the mosquito escaping from the set- up. Once the experiment had started, write down all

the happenings inside the set-up. Observe now the behaviour of the mosquito. After the

experiment, compile now and analyze the data gathered.

Data Gathering

To determine the effects of Lanzones Peel and Atis leaves as a mosquito repellent, we

will prepare a set – up to be the place of experiment:

1. When the experiment start, observe the behaviour of the mosquitoes in accordance

to the candle

2. After the experiment, analyze all the data that you gathered and make a

conclusion.
