MY STYLE IS COMFORT, always, but what is comfortable changes 5
day to day. It can go from a hoodie and jeans to a Gunne Sax dress
to a full SEQUIN-DISCO look [4]. I love ALESSANDRO MICHELE
(obviously) at Gucci [1, 6]. His ability to reference a vast amount of
things yet create something totally new EXCITES me every time he
designs a new collection. My friend MARISA JIWI SEOK makes
this crazy jewellery line called Jiwinaia [3]. The pieces are WILD
and always so ORIGINAL. I want Gucci’s Web wicker mini shoulder
bag [8] and Jiwinaia’s Eastpak collab [11]. I’m obsessed with Justine
Clenquet [5] and have so many pairs of the same HOOP EARRINGS

that I wear EVERY DAY. I have more than 30 pairs of CLASSIC
JEANS [12] and I wear them almost exclusively. I’m a huge denim
person. I’m into either OVERSIZED things or CROPPED and

Representation of women in media is at a
flashpoint. As male former luminaries, from

THE RULE-BREAKER
THOMAS DE KLUYVER, MAKEUP ARTIST
Homegrown in Perth, blowing up in London, de Kluyver might just be
one of Australia’s brightest beauty exports. Dominating the season backstage
at shows from Opening Ceremony to Jason Wu, Jil Sander and Kenzo, the
entirely self-schooled makeup artist is getting traction for making runway
beauty, dare we say it, democratic. “My assistant found the craft glitter we
used over the top of the Maybelline colours at Opening Ceremony at the
mall just by Disneyland,” he says. “I’d say more than half my brushes are
from the art supply store — my favourite ones for blending eye shadow are
actually meant for watercolours, and my number-one lip brush is a square
synthetic brush that I think cost me around two dollars.” What should we
invest in instead? “The best-quality foundation and skincare
you can afford — my favourites are from Chanel and Crème
de la Mer,” he says. De Kluyver, the son of a theatre director,
first got a feel for faces by practising looks from François Nars’
book Makeup Your Mind and Stéphane Marais’ Beauty Flash
on his friends and taking bold makeup looks out in clubland.
His philosophy: don’t be intimidated, be inspired.

21 of America’s Next Top Model. The Canadian, whose real name is
Chantelle Brown-Young, didn’t win the crown, but she’s since changed
the modelling game. One of the most recognisable faces on the
international fashion circuit, at 23, she’s walked for Marc Jacobs and
Julien Macdonald, luminesced in Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade,
landed a beauty gig with natural powerhouse Burt’s Bees and has just
been signed as an ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger. Oh, and she has
vitiligo, a condition that depigments patches of skin. Though she was
teased so relentlessly in high school that she dropped out, Harlow says
approaching supermodel status isn’t a clap back at bullies; she’s more
about raising the bar, pushing the conversation about diversity wide
open. And with 3.4 million fans on Instagram, she’s not scared to speak
up. When a London tabloid called her a “vitiligo sufferer”, Harlow
’grammed a response: “I’m not a ‘Vitiligo Sufferer’. … I am Winnie.
I am a model. And I happen to have vitiligo. Stop putting these
titles on me or anyone else.” Go disrupt, girl.

But there’s one chink in her minimalist armour: Gittoes has a thing
for indoor plants, which means regular Saturdays devoted to repot-
ting, and all the wonderful mess that goes with it. “I love green, I love
having nature in here. If I could have more, I would,” she says. “We
started off buying a couple and thought, These are really nice, but they
seem like they’re all alone. [Plants] bring some colour into the home.
Everything else is quite monotone.” The north-facing, heat-trapping
sunroom is a perfect spot for Gittoes’s cacti, whereas in the living
room she has a favourite fiddle-leaf fig she and Munro got “when it
was a baby” upon moving in together. “Watching it grow … it’s one of
the best-performing plants. I have a green thumb and hadn’t realised.”

private white-sand beach. Back at the main site, the cruisey Nio
Beach Club is stocked with tow-out power boats, surf- and paddle-
boards, snorkels and dive equipment, fishing accoutrements and all
manner of other oceanic accessories. This savvy set-up means
shore-lovers can eat, drink, bake and swim in the lap pool or the
soft, foamy ocean mere metres from the surf action, paddling in to
watch the sunset over the sets with an icy Bintang. It’s all so easy,
and a real contrast to the home lives of the moneyed American
surfers who make up many of Nihi’s guests, something that has
helped propel it to world-number-one-hotel status — twice.
The resort stretches along two and a half kilometres of pristine
coastline where jungle and rice paddies meet powdery white
sand. It’s breathtaking — the stuff screen savers are made of.
There’s the inevitable comparison between this purity, serenity

thing I’ve strived to avoid for all my beach holidays, but we discover
it means pleasantly misty light rains. The sun’s harshness is dulled,
and the light is gentle and low and dreamy. Colours are muted and,
without the midday glare, we quickly descend into a floppy stupor. THIS PAGE: READ McKENDREE. OPPOSITE PAGE: ELIZA O’HARE; TANIASMAGICALTRAVELS.COM
It’s what we need — the wet season forces relaxation. I’m a convert.
Because Sumba is so off-the-beaten-track, there are things here you
just cannot experience anywhere else, and isn’t that the definition of
luxury? Nihi keeps 17 horses in manicured stables by the beach, with
a dedicated team. They’re a mix of horse breeds traded by the Dutch
in exchange for spices, retired racehorses and ponies for pasola, the
daredevil local version of polo in which javelins are employed to fell
opponents. Not everyone survives, and local grievances are played
out. We’re only a couple of weeks away from this year’s event, so antic-
ipation runs high among the stable hands who will compete.
Riding at a clip along the beach is one of the big moments of our
trip. There is some free-spirited cantering along the sand, knee-
high into the surf and up sheer green slopes to ride among a herd
of water buffalo being shepherded home between terraced rice
paddies. Exhilarating.
But our most memorable highlight happens like clockwork every
day:happy hour in the bar,a stiff gin-and-tonic in hand, sand between
our toes, quietly contemplating Occy’s Left. Luxury indeed.

seems to have had quite a number of celebrity pupils, describes
one of the ski runs, Mystic Pines, as “Hilary Swank’s favourite”.
But unlike other, glitzier, better-known resorts, this is where
celebrities come to ski without being seen.
My first day in Park City is spent skiing CanyonsVillage, where
the wide terrain feels endless once I make it off the magic carpet
with the help of my very patient and very pro instructor. The
landscape is picturesque, and the feeling of zooming along between
quietly reverberating aspens under clear skies is second to none.
Park City Mountain is a little more built-up, until we make our

views to Deer Valley. Lunch options on both

visited all of the impressive spots for photo
opportunities. I vow never to ski without a private instructor again.
While the days are spent swishing down the mountain, evenings
in Park City are all about relaxed après-ski followed by farm-to-
table dining. For drinks right off the slopes, visit the world’s first
and only ski-in gastro-distillery, High West, for the incredibly
well-executed cocktails and delicious modern-Southern food.The
dining scene in Park City is young yet impressive, with a strong
focus on seasonality and local ingredients, chefs delicately balancing
inventiveness with comfort-food offerings. Make a reservation and
settle in for a night of shared feasting at buzzy Handle.
On our final day, we join Park City Yoga Adventures at nearby
Blue Sky ranch for a gentle guided hike among quiet alpine forest
and across snow-blanketed hills. Our hourlong walk finishes in a
Norwegian-style yurt perched on a mountaintop meadow, where
we are treated to a private yoga session in front of a crackling wood
fire followed by cups of herbal tea.A deeply restorative day off the
slopes and the perfect tonic for ski-tired muscles (and, in our case,
a godsend for a last-night-in-Park-City-induced hangover).
