RUMI (in full Jalal al-Din Rumi) (ca. 1207-1273) was a 13th-century Persian Sunni
Muslim poet and Sufi mystic. Best known for his poems expressing the ecstasies and
mysteries of love of all kinds -- erotic, divine, friendship -- Rumi has widely
influenced mystical thought and literature throughout history. Today, he remains
one of the most read poets in the world, whose wise teachings and exquisite verse
transcend all boundaries in their mystic brilliance.
Rumi was a poet of rare transcendental power. His inspirational verse speaks with
the universal voice of the human soul and brims with exuberant energy and passion.
The epic MASNAVI ("Spiritual Verses") is one of the best known and most influential
works of Sufism, consisting of six books of poetry that together amount to around
25,000 verses and teaching Sufis how to reach their goal of being in true love with
God. Rumi described it as "the roots of the roots of the roots of the (Islamic)
religion," and the text came to be regarded by some Sufis as the Persian-language
Quran, widely influencing mystical thought and literature throughout the Muslim
world.
Rumi's use of Persian and Arabic in his poetry, in addition to some Turkish and
less Greek, has resulted in his being claimed variously for Turkish literature and
Persian literature, a reflection of the strength of his influence in Iran and
Turkey. The influence of his writings in the Indian subcontinent is also
substantial. By the end of the 20th century, his popularity had become a global
phenomenon, with his poetry achieving a wide circulation in western Europe and the
United States.
