Title: CO2 Powered Dragster Race Car

Design, Build and Test a TIJ1O0

Activity: Dragster made of wood blank Course: Exploring Technology
using the design process.
Prepare and submit a report on
the project.
Time 12 classes Date:
Req’d:
RATIONALE:

Most houses and furniture are made of wood. A wide range of wood types are available in
abundance to build them. Exploring Construction Technology will prepare you to choose a
career or pursue it as a hobby. This unit will prepare you with valuable skills of using hand tools
and machines commonly used in the Wood shop. It will also help you understand the Design
Process in a fun and enjoyable way by competing with other teams while building the fastest
CO2 powered Dragster Race Car. This activity also provides an opportunity to further develop
research, construction, graphic communication and presentation skills.

THE ASSIGNMENT

You will research, design, develop, build and test a CO2 powered Dragster Race Car build out
of wood. This assignment is partly a group project and partly done individually. You will first
research and draw Freehand sketches, then select a design and create an Orthographic Drawing.
After this you will use machines and tools safely to build the Dragster Race Car. This model
will be tested on a racetrack. You will finally submit a report on the project.

KEY CONCEPTS: You will learn in this project to:

1. Research the design and development of a product using the SPICE design process.
2. Create drawings using engineering conventions.
3. Operate machines and simple tools safely and understand the importance of safety.
4. Test your design as per given dimensions and criteria.
5. Complete a report in a systematic and organized method.

The materials needed for this activity includes wood blank, CO2 cartridge, front and rear plastic
wheels, axles, bearings, washers, eye-hooks, drawing/ illustration tools such as pencils, markers,
computer graphics software, scissors, paper, paint and Starting block for testing.

The machines and tools required for this project are Drill Press, Scroll Saw, Scriber, measuring
tape, file, sandpaper and paint stand.

PROJECT PROCEDURE
Step Procedure

S Situation or Scenario
Read scenario and make observations. Initiate a log sheet. Maintain it until
end of project.

P Problems & Possibilities

Read the Design Brief.
Study the criteria that outline the requirements and limitations of this
project. Use this to develop your orthographic drawing.

I Investigation or Ideas
Research solutions using Internet or other resources.
Draw a minimum of three Freehand sketches on the sheet provided. Label
them and write notes about each sketch.

C Choose and/or Create

Choose the best Freehand sketch or use a combination of good features from
all sketches and draw the final Orthographic Drawing. Use the Dimension
Tolerance Sheet as a guide for measurements. Retain sketches and drawing
for the report.

Use tools safely. Use resources responsibly and avoid wastage. Follow
teacher instructions for cleanliness.

Check for errors and see if it meets the dimension criteria. Make
observations, modify the design if required. Now collaborate with your
partner and choose the final design. You may combine ideas if required.
Layout the final design on the wood blank. Drill holes for axle and cut wood
to shape safely.

File off extra material and round off all edges. Use rough sandpaper first and
then a smooth sandpaper to get the desired finish. Place cardboard on the
table to avoid mess and use paint stand to apply paint. Use your creative
skills and decorate it. Fix all accessories and test it with a practice run.

E Evaluate
After the project is completed you should compose a detailed summary or
Evaluation report of what you observed and learned during the project.
● Describe the challenge.
● Explain the problems faced and solutions you came up with.
● Mention the strengths and weaknesses of your project.
● Summarize by listing changes you will make if this project was done
again.
(Maximum one page, typed, double-spaced, font 12).
Complete your Activity sheet.
Submit your report in an attractive folder.

Scenario:
“AFORDE MOTOR CO” and “GEN-RALLY CARS” are fierce competitors in the automotive
manufacturing business. They are each planning to design and build a race car for the future. The car
must be sleek, aerodynamically perfect, fuel efficient, and attractive. These companies are looking
for talented people to hire for this project. To find the most talented personnel, they are expecting the
candidates to design, develop and build a model made of wood.
The Car is going to be powered by a CO2 cartridge and all the materials are going to be provided by
the companies. It must meet certain specifications as it is going to be tested on a racetrack.

Problems & Possibilities:

Design Brief
To design and build a Dragster Race Car with a wood blank. This car must be tested on a racetrack
and finally a report must be submitted following the Design Process.

Design Considerations
Requirements:

❑ The model must be made using a wood blank.

❑ You should use the wheels, axles, bearing, eye-hooks etc. provided.
❑ It should be decorated to make it look attractive & pleasing to the eye.
❑ It should be functional and capable for testing on the racetrack.
❑ It should meet all the dimension tolerances.

Limitations:
❑ It must be made and tested in the school.
❑ Limited tools and materials are to be used.
❑ No horseplay is allowed.
❑ Should meet the timelines as planned by the teacher.
