Windows® 10 Software Compatibility

Bulletin # TS0060 Rev 2/2016

Following the release of Windows 10 operating system software by Microsoft

Corporation, Thermo Fisher Scientific has conducted tests to determine compatibility of
our Environmental Monitoring product’s software with Windows 10. Please reference the
chart in this document to determine system compatibility. With few exceptions as noted
in the chart, most programs are compatible with Windows 10 operating systems. For
those exceptions (in red) it will be necessary to run the instrument software using
Windows 7 (32-bit) or later in a virtual machine.

To determine if your Windows operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit, go to Control

Panel > All Control Panel Items > System to view system type.

NOTE: Select the latest version of VMware Player

1. (A) Since the release of Windows 7, Microsoft made a change which

prevents software from writing into the C:\Program Files folder, which is
the default location where RPComm would write its files. Prior to
installing RPComm software, create new folders called
Thermo\RPComm on your local C: drive. During the install of RPComm
software a message box comes up saying unable to save to Drive C,
Select OK, choose C:\Thermo\RPComm, and select OK. In the
Destination Folder, also change the path to C:\Thermo\RPComm.

(B) When using typical Windows 10 display configurations, the Station
Setup fields in RPComm are not visible because the fields are blacked
out. The Station Setup is located in File > New Connection > Settings
under AK Protocol Setup. In order to make these fields viewable, visual
setup changes in Windows need to be made.

• Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Personalization

under High Contrast Themes select High Contrast White.

• Run RPComm and go to Station Setup to set the desired Station

and Channel fields.

• When complete, go back to Personalization and under Windows

Default Themes select Windows to restore back to the original
settings.

2. If there is no RS232 connection com port on the PC being used, a USB

to serial adapter may be used instead.

NOTE: The USB to serial adapter must be manually set to COM1 in

the Device Manager.

• Right click on Start window and select System.

www.thermofisher.com
• Click on Device Manager

• Click on Ports (COM & LPT) to display all ports in use.

Re-assign Com ports: The com port assigned to COM1 (in this example
Communication Port) will need to be changed to a different COM number
first. Then the USB Serial Port adapter COM port can be changed to COM1.

• Right click on the port you need to re-assign, and select

"Properties”.

www.thermofisher.com
• Then click on the “Port Settings” tab and click on “Advanced”:

• Pull down the “COM Port Number” menu:

• Select any COM port number that’s not “in use”.

• Click OK twice to accept all changes and verify that the COM port
has been changed to the new one.
• In the Device manager repeat the same instructions on the USB
Serial Port (adapter) and assign it to COM1.

• Verify that USB Serial Port is now assigned to “COM1”

• The USB Serial Port is now ready for use.

3. ePort

a) PLEASE NOTE: Before installing ePort software on Windows 10

ether 32 or 64-bit Operating System, an Internet connection is
required to complete the installation.

The following error message below will display if there is no Internet

connection on your PC.

b) On Windows 10 only 32-bit: During the installation of ePort

software, two error messages will display "File install.exe not found".

To resolve this:

• Click “OK” on both error message widows and they will

disappear.

• Reinstall ePort from the beginning and the software will

successfully complete the installation without any issues.
www.thermofisher.com
c) On Windows 10 both 32 and 64-bit: After installing ePort software it
is important to run ePort as an Administrator. This will cause the
UAC message to show up every time you run ePort, but it will allow
ePort to write to protected folders.

d) On Windows 10 both 32 and 64-bit: When Updating Instrument

Firmware in ePort, be sure to turn the Firewall off to allow firmware
to update. Once update is complete, set the Firewall back to its
original state.

4. DR4-COM on Windows 10 only 32-bit:

a) NTVDM is not installed by default in Windows 10 and it used as a

compatibility component for older programs. Once installed, you should
not see a request for the component to be installed again.

• During the installation of DR4-COM, an option to install “NTVDM”

will be display. Click on “Install this feature”.

• The following message below should display “successfully

installed” when NTVDM installation is completed.

www.thermofisher.com
• Follow the remaining instructions to complete DR4-COM
installation.

b) When selecting the Help option in DR4-COM, a Microsoft Support web

page is displayed stating that this “Help” feature is not included or
supported.

Example of Message displayed

NOTE: There is currently no Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for

Windows 10.
