On Sept. 25, the Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter of the National Council of Black Women
(NCBW) held its 21st annual Torchbearers Awards Breakfast honoring leaders in various vocations.
The event, held at Martin’s West, featured speaker Carla A. Harris, managing director in the
Institutional Advisory Group at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. The program also
included musical presentations and prize giveaways.
NCBW was founded in 1971 to mobilize Black women from various backgrounds into one
influential force. The Baltimore chapter was chartered in1989 and is currently led by Laura Knight. President Emerita Dr. Anne O.

made it special from last year’s one-year celebration, to the

I was among the thousands that travelled to Hollywood

couldn’t resist the urge to make history on opening day. I
called my favorite Aunt Sis, who lives in Havre de Grace, a
five-minute ride from Perryville to see if she wanted to go.
I laughed when she said, “I’m already here.” “Hold on I’m
coming,” I told her as I was passing the Maryland House. “It
should‘ve been me.” The screams from the woman winning
$10,000 on a penny progressive machine was priceless.
