God's Call to Abram

1 The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's
home, and go to a land that I am going to show you. 2 I will give you many
descendants, and they will become a great nation. I will bless you and make
your name famous, so that you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, But I will curse those who curse you.
And through you I will bless all the nations.”
4 When Abram was seventy-five years old, he started out from Haran, as the
Lord had told him to do; and Lot went with him. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai, his
nephew Lot, and all the wealth and all the slaves they had acquired in Haran,
and they started out for the land of Canaan.

When they arrived in Canaan, 6 Abram traveled through the land until he came
to the sacred tree of Moreh, the holy place at Shechem. (At that time the
Canaanites were still living in the land.) 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said
to him, “This is the country that I am going to give to your descendants.” Then
Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 After that, he
moved on south to the hill country east of the city of Bethel and set up his camp
between Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There also he built an altar and
worshiped the Lord. 9 Then he moved on from place to place, going toward the
southern part of Canaan.

Abram in Egypt

10 But there was a famine in Canaan, and it was so bad that Abram went
farther south to Egypt, to live there for a while. 11 When he was about to cross
the border into Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “You are a beautiful woman. 12
When the Egyptians see you, they will assume that you are my wife, and so
they will kill me and let you live. 13 Tell them that you are my sister; then
because of you they will let me live and treat me well.”
14 When he crossed the border into Egypt, the Egyptians did see that his wife
was beautiful. 15 Some of the court officials saw her and told the king how
beautiful she was; so she was taken to his palace. 16 Because of her the king
treated Abram well and gave him flocks of sheep and goats, cattle, donkeys,
slaves, and camels.
17 But because the king had taken Sarai, the Lord sent terrible diseases on him
and on the people of his palace. 18 Then the king sent for Abram and asked
him, “What have you done to me? Why didn't you tell me that sheyou’re your
wife? 19 Why did you say that she was your sister, and let me take her as my
wife? Here is your wife; take her and get out!” 20 The king gave orders to his
men, so they took Abram and put him out of the country, together with his wife
and everything he owned.

Genesis Chapter 12

A conversation

J. In verse one, Abram was called on to leave not only his country and relatives but
also his fathers home. Was there some special significance in that ?
G. Leaving his fathers home meant breaking off from a long established pattern of
life, and embarking on a wholly new life, in this case, not a life that perpetuated sin,
but a life that could contain the blessing that God wanted to give. In the same way
we too sometimes need to break away from patterns of life that impede what God
wants to do in our lives- to position ourselves in the place of blessing. It may not
mean moving countries like Abram but could mean changing circumstances or our
goals and pursuits.
J. In verse 2 Abram is told that his descendants will become a great nation. Surely
Israel was then and always has been only a very small nation .
G. Its true that in terms of political strength, Israel has never been anything like
Babylon, Persia, Greece or Rome , no, their greatness has been of a particular type.
When we look at world history, with the exception of Greece perhaps, those nations
mentioned have left little by way of positive legacy to world history. The Jewish
people on the other hand have left a legacy that has changed the world. They
would be one of the most influential nations that the world has ever seen as their
ideas, inherited through Divine revalation have shaped world history more than
any other people group. We see in them a promise that has indeed been fulfilled,
often against seemingly impossible odds.
J. Why did God choose to bless this man ?
G. There seems no reason why Abram was chosen, he just was. It’s the same with
us a believers in Jesus Christ- we are blessed but not because of anything that we
have done, not even because we chose God. First and foremost HE chose us- not
because of any merit or potential in us but simply , He chose us because He loved
us. Everything begins with God, that’s in inescapable truth, and one that is revealed
to us so that we can know the extent of God’s love. He chooses you and me
because He loves us.
J. in verse 2 God promises to make Abrams name great. Didn’t we see in the
chapter 11 story of the Tower of Babel that one of man kinds downfalls was the
desire to make his name great ?
G. The problem with the Tower was that it represented mans desire to create an
identity independent of God. But now we see God saying “I will make your name
great” , not just a promise that Abram would be famous, but that He(God) was
going to give Abram a great role and identity. And God says the same to us
today….He wants to shape our identity too, and define our role in life, to take up a
great calling in Jesus Christ to be His representatives here on earth.
J. Verse 3 is hard to understand; I thought that Christians were meant to love their
enemies .
G. First of all its important to understand that those who have accepted Jesus Christ
as Lord and Saviour are blessed, and no one can penetrate that blessing with any
type of curse. In Christ we are immune, not to suffering, but to curse. In other
words, we can be hurt physically and emotionally but our spiritual state in Him
cannot be changed; in Him we are blessed, affirmed and loved.
Now, to our role as Christians, which is to bless, even those who might curse us. By
doing so, we can bring blessing to those who are cursed themselves ….this is what
God wants us to do.(Ref Romans 12.24) It is not for us to curse people, but to bless
them. However, if our blessing is not received, then curse remains as we read in
Deuteronomy 32.35. But that is God’s prerogative. Ours is to exercise grace, to
minister it in the same way that we have received it ourselves from Jesus Christ.
That means that we are to repay curse with blessing, and leave judgment to God.
