VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT PISTON PUMP.

Nine pistons are mounted in cylinder barrel which turns with drive shaft. A piston shoe is attached to
each piston and each shoe is held against the non rotating swashplate by shoe plate. When the
swashplate is angled as shown the pistons move left and right as the drive shaft and cylinder barrel
rotate.

As the pistons move to the left oil is pulled from the inlert port, through port plate, into the piston
bore in the cylinder barrel. As the cylinder barrel rotates the piston moves to the right and oil in the
piston moves to the right and oil in the piston bore is forced out through port plate to the outlet port.

The stroke of the piston, and therefore the amount of oil oil delivered during each revolution of the
drive shaft, is determined by the angle of the swashplate. the swashplate angle can be varied between
maximum (corresponding to maximum flow as illustrated) and zero (no flow).

Compensator valve adjusts the pump output to meet system demand by controlling the flow of pump
oil to control piston. This piston works against swashplate control spring to adjust theangle of the
swashplate.

Pressure from the brake and suspension system is transmitted through port in the pump casing and
acts on compensator spool. When the pressure is lower than the force of control spring the spring
angles swasplate to increase the pump output.

As the pump output increases, system pressure increases and the compensator spool is raised against
the force of spring. System pressure now acts on the control piston which moves to the left and begins
to reduce the angle of the swashplate, compressing the control spring.

At maximum system pressure pump output is reduced to provide sufficient flow to compensate for
internal loss and maintain pressure only.

This point is reached when the compensator spool uncovers passage and sufficient oil is bypassed to
allow a balance between the force of the compensator spring, and the pressure acting on the
compensator spool.
