Two weeks before the intergovnermental taskforce of the
Human Rights Council meets in Geneva for its forth session, it
seems particulary appropriate to review the latest proposals
on an international legal framework for the governance of
business practices and conduct of transnational corporations
which, by nature, are beyond the control of national States..
Olivier De Schutter will speak to us by video from Geneva to
introduce the subject.
SPEAKERS :
Stavros Lambrinidis
The European Union Special Representative for Human Rights
since 2012. He is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece
(2011). He was a Member (2004-2011) and Vice-President
(2009-2011) of the European Parliament. – Formerly, he was
Secretary General and Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic
(1996-2004).

Maddalena Neglia will recall the broader context on how the
debate on human rights and business entities was developed
by the UN and the key conceptual and political challenges.
Denise Auclair will present the discussion on a new legally
binding instrument on the issue of transnational corporations
and human rights and what she sees as the next steps.
Stavros Lambrinidis, EU Special Representative for human
rights, will present the contribution of the EU to the issue and
the tools the EU has developed to improve the compliance
with human rights of corporations domiciled in the EU.
The Association JUSTICE and PEACE will display an exhibition
on the mining industry in various parts of the world. The
exhibition can be seen from 5:00 pm at the Residence Palace.
Maddalena Neglia
Director of the Globalisation and Human Rights desk of FIDH
(International Federation of Human Rights) where she
oversees the strategic priority on “Promoting Respect of
Human Rights by Economic Players” and the activities on
strengthening the international and European regulatory
framework on corporate accountability.
Denise Auclair
Senior Advisor at CIDSE International, leader of CIDSE’s
strategy for international change towards a world of equality
and solidarity. She is involved in CIDSE work on business and
human rights at European and international levels.
