Strategy for Process Design

Level-3 Decisions: Recycle Structure of Flowsheet

55
Level-3 Decision 6: Reactor Heat Effects

• Some key choices

– Adiabatic
– Direct heating or cooling
– Diluent or heat carrier (this will change material balances)
• Step 1: Estimate reactor heat load
– Heat load = 𝑖 𝜉𝑗 Δ𝐻𝑅,𝑗
j = reaction index.  is a function of design variables

Heuristic:
Reactor Heat Load = Heat of Reaction  Limiting Reactant Fresh Feed Rate

For HDA, neglect heat of side reactions, total extent = FF,T

• Step 2: Estimate adiabatic temperature change

Energy balance: Q 
R  F Cp (T
i
i i Rin  TRout )  0

Level-3 Decision 6: Reactor Heat Effects

Classwork #11 (Week 10, 20-Jul-18): Work in a pair and submit before end of class.
1. Estimate the reactor heat load for the HDA process using a suitable heuristic. You
may neglect the heat effects of the side reaction. (Given heat of reaction for the
main reaction is 50,033 kJ/kmol.)
2. Perform an adiabatic temperature change to estimate the reactor outlet
temperature. Would it be possible to operate the reactor adiabatically?

Component Hf (kJ/kmol) Cp (kJ/kmolC)

Hydrogen 0 52.5
Methane 74,860 67.2
Toluene 50,030 245.1
Benzene 82,980 194.5
Diphenyl 182,210 374.7
