HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT
The Cares Family (North London Cares, South London Cares, Manchester Cares and Liverpool
Cares) is a group of community networks of young professionals and older neighbours
hanging out and helping one another in our rapidly changing cities.
Our objectives are to tackle the growing plight of isolation and loneliness amongst older and
younger people alike; to help improve the confidence, connection, belonging, purpose and
power of all participants so that neighbours can better navigate the modern world; and to
bring people together to bridge social, generational, digital, cultural and attitudinal divides.
We do this because while our big cities are amazing – full of people from all over the world and
hotbeds of innovation and change – they can also be anonymous, lonely and isolating. With
globalisation, gentrification, digitisation, urban transience and housing bubbles changing
our communities faster than ever before, older people in particular can feel left out and left
behind.
But young people are increasingly feeling disconnected from community too. In fact, while
older people are the loneliest age group in the country, people from 21 to 35 are the second
loneliest. Clearly those two groups have so much to gain from one another – in shared time,
laughter, new experiences and friendship.
The Cares Family model seeks to harness the people and places around us and to mobilise a
new generation of young professionals to build relationships and share experiences with our
older neighbours in a variety of fun, authentic ways. We speak the language of younger and
older people alike – and make interaction on a personal level mutually accessible, rewarding
and fun.
The Cares Family is a UK registered company (no. 10236615). North London Cares is the public name for NL Cares Limited, UK registered company
(no. 07737818) and UK registered charity (no. 1153137). South London Cares Limited is a UK registered company (no. 8757344) and UK registered
charity (no. 1157401). Manchester Cares is a UK registered company (no. 10893107) and UK registered charity (no. 1176902). Liverpool Cares is a
UK registered company (no. 11166325) and UK registered charity (no. 1177749).
We achieve that vision through the delivery of programmes that everyone can relate to and
enjoy. At the cross-section of the public, private and community sectors we work with
businesses, local authorities, voluntary groups and individuals to identify isolation where it
occurs and to connect younger and older people in myriad ways. The majority of the
neighbours within our networks live alone, may not naturally have wide social groups, and love
and look forward to new experiences with their younger friends.
ABOUT OUR PROGRAMMES
Specifically, we run four core programmes. Our Social Clubs are group activities that bring
younger and older people together in cafes, pubs, parks, community centres and big
businesses to share time, laughter and new experiences. Regular clubs include dance and
dinner parties, film nights, choirs, new tech workshops, podcasting clubs, ‘back to work’
business visits and themed get-togethers.
Meanwhile, our Love Your Neighbour programme matches young professionals and older
people to build friendships one-to-one, often in people's homes and community locations, to
improve the life experiences of all parties and to help bring a little of the outside world in for
those who can struggle to get out. Neighbours build relationships on their own terms, enjoy
meals together, and often become long-standing friends.
Our proactive Outreach identifies isolation where it occurs. We place ourselves in GP
surgeries, pharmacies, supermarkets, post offices and betting shops and strike up
conversations with the older people we meet to tell them about out how to get involved. This
work intensifies with our Winter Wellbeing initiative, through which we help neighbours to stay
warm, active, healthy and connected through the most isolating time of the year.
Finally, our Community Fundraising offers another exciting way for younger and older people
to share time and camaraderie and to contribute to the networks that they value so much.
From individual challenges including marathons, long walks and Tough Mudders, to creating
engaging digital campaigns, to inviting regular donations and building corporate and other
partnerships, local people support The Cares Family in a variety of ways.
Our four branches have evolved over seven years and, during this time, we have made a
significant contribution to the debate on loneliness in the UK and around the world. Now, as we
look to the future, we are seeking new opportunities to further expand our model to additional
urban centres experiencing rapid change, disconnection and isolation.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join The Cares Family in a senior role at a key
moment in our development and at a point when businesses, communities and government
further consider how to reduce loneliness and connect communities for the long term.
In particular, this is an exciting time to join our Development team. In the past two years, we
have received funding from some of the UK’s leading grant-giving bodies – including Nesta,
The Big Lottery Fund, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Comic Relief, The Fore and The Mercers’
Company – to sustain, expand and deepen our work. We’ve also rapidly expanded our
Community Fundraising programme, leading to an increase in voluntary donations as a
proportion of our income from 0% to 45% in four years. And we’ve expanded our corporate
partnerships too, appointing a Development Coordinator (Partnerships) in 2018 to help us
further grow our revenue and deepen our impact.
Now, as we plan for the future, we are keen to take advantage of the growing awareness
of loneliness as a major challenge of our time, and to meet the fullest potential of our
model. The creation of this new role will help us to achieve that. With the new funding you
generate, and the leadership you instill across the fundraising team, we will be able to invest
further in our core programmes; hardwire sustainability and innovation into our model; plan for
further growth to new urban areas beyond our current locations; and to help more older and
younger people to feel part of their communities even as they continue to change at pace.
In your new role as our national Head of Development, you will be responsible for generating
new income from trusts, foundations and other grant-giving bodies for our four local branches,
and more as they are created. You will work with our Director of Development to identify new
opportunities and cultivate existing and prospective relationships. You will compose engaging,
dynamic applications on behalf of both The Cares Family and our local charities. And upon
securing funding, you will ensure exceptional stewardship of trusts and foundations, and
provide comprehensive monitoring, evaluation and reporting. In doing so, you will generate
£250,000 for The Cares Family group through grants in every financial year.
But this role is not just about writing bids. You will also perform a vital, senior internal function:
team management. You will be responsible for supporting and inspiring each of the
Development Coordinators at our four local branches, and more as your work spurs our
growth. And while you will be based close to your home, you will travel between our offices in
north London, south London, Manchester and Liverpool to secure support from local and
national organisations, while also supporting our Development Coordinators to reach their own
Community Fundraising targets.
That requires exceptional written and people-skills – a need to be both clear and passionate on
paper and persuasive in person. You will use your passion and energy to raise funds and
inspire your team to do the same. So you will always be ambitious for yourself, your
colleagues, and The Cares Family.
That’s a big ask and a major opportunity for the right person so we’re looking for a s killed,
experienced fundraiser with a hunger to succeed.. The job requires you to be motivated by
the power of relationships and new opportunities. It also needs all the creativity, versatility,

confidence, positivity, proactivity, perseverance and leadership required in a young and rapidly
growing organisation.
ABOUT YOU
For this role we are looking for someone with significant experience of fundraising from
trusts and foundations and strong leadership potential. You need to be driven,
self-motivated and ambitious to succeed. We need someone who’ll be proud to fundraise for
The Cares Family. We also need you to be a self-starter: committed, tough, and focused
working alone as well as in teams; and someone who is passionate about developing and
improving our model over the coming years and in a challenging environment.
In return, you will be trusted to work dynamically and independently and you will be provided
with development challenges and opportunities, and professional support from our national
Director of Development, with four years’ experience in the organisation, and ever-growing
networks, to play a lasting role in the development of the “Cares” vision.
