Brief course description:-

Human Capital management can be defined as the effective and efficient use of human
potential in an organization through the management of people-related activities. It involves
leadership, values, employment planning, recruiting and selecting employees, training and
compensating them, and evaluating their performance.
The general purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the basic principles and
techniques of human capital management. The course takes a practical view that integrates
the contributions of the behavioral sciences with the technical aspects of implementing the
HR functions in the ‘real world.’ The course also presents human resource issues in a manner
relevant to all students and emphasizes practical applications for managers and supervisors in
various organizations. Certainly, not everyone who takes this course will become a human
resource professional, however, all managers, no matter what their specialization, play an
integral role in carrying out HR policies and practices in their organization – and they have to
deal with their organization’s human resources department.
Thus, a basic understanding of human resource management is essential whether the student
works in a government agency, financial services, hospital, high technology industry, retail,
educational institution, or other type of organization. A key objective of this course is to show
that Human Capital management is more than just inviting employment applications and
keeping records; instead it is a central and strategic organizational activity of increasing
complexity and importance.

Course aims:-
The aim of this course is to equip students with the competitive knowledge, skills and
competencies necessary for the management of HUMAN CAPITAL; undoubtedly the most
valuable and challenging resource of an organization. Course further aims to enable students
to conceptualize and exhibit all functions related to human resource management according
to the current needs of the corporate world.
Learning outcomes:
After the successful completion of this course students would be able to;
1. Appreciate the importance of human capital management as a field of study and as a vital
source of sustained competitive advantage.

2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the literature pertaining to the management

of people in organizations.

3. Exhibit skills in researching, and recommending workable solutions for, organizational

problems of major relevance to managers.

4. Define the important HR functions (e.g. – Planning, Recruitment, Selection, Training,

Compensation etc.) and key concepts & issues associated with each.

5. Propose the implications of all principles and techniques of human resource management
for organizations.

Learning and Teaching

This course will utilize a blend of instructional methods and media to encourage both an
intellectual understanding and a personal sense of the subject matter. These will include
lectures, readings, discussions, case studies, student presentations, films and experiential
exercises. The goal will be to use the time allocated to us to maximum effect. Your
contribution towards achieving this goal will be to do the assigned reading before the class
and to ensure that you are in the class and ready to learn every class.

COURSE METHODOLOGY
The following learning methodology would be used during this course:
1. Case discussions
2. Class discussions
3. Presentations
4. Group Activities
Regularity and Punctuality:
Regularity and punctuality will be very strictly observed. You have an allowance of only
three absences (out of 15 sessions). This includes the leaves that are approved from your
Batch Advisor. In case you are absent in four classes, you will get an ‘F’ in the course.
Regarding punctuality, you will be marked present only if you arrive in the class within five
minutes of the scheduled time. Any absents during the presentation sessions will result in
deduction of 1 point each from the class participation marks. This means that the class
participation marks can go into the negative as well. If your group is making a presentation
and you are not there, you get a zero. If you miss a Quiz you get zero in that Quiz. You will
lose 20% if you deliver your assignment/report after the given date and the same will be
added for an additional day. The chapters and other material included in the Mid-term and
final Exam will be discussed one week prior to its commencement respectively.

Class Participation:
Positive, healthy and constructive class participation will be monitored for each class.
Particular emphasis will be given during the presentation sessions. The manner in which the
question is asked or answered will also be noted. Your behaviour, as business executives in
the class will contribute to the class participation marks. Any issues/confusions regarding
classroom teaching, I will be available in counselling hours and I strongly encourage that.

Honesty Policy:
A student found in cheating (plagiarism) on any exam/ assignment/ project, his/her case will
be referred to Unfair Means Committee (UFM) that may result in no credit (i.e. no grade) for
that exam/ assignment/ project. A deduction from the sessional marks and financial penalties
are other possibilities as decided by the committee.

Plagiarism:
It is defined in dictionaries as "the wrongful appropriation, close imitation, or purloining
(stealing) and publication, of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions, and
the representation of them as one's own original work.

Assessments:
