Since big cities arised, traffic jams have been one of the main trouble in people´s lives. To
really understand the reason why traffic lights has become the backbone in our society,(We
must first venture to 1868 a British railroad engineer named, John Peake Knight
took an idea from the design of railway signalling systems. It was installed
outside London’s House of Parliament and a traffic cop operated it manually and
gas-powered at night. It sparked the invention of a system which could easily control traffic
and avoid as many mishaps as possible.

The first signal which was installed was near Westminster Bridge. Moreover before being this
kind of devices available in cities, traffic wasn´t totally forgotten, it was controlled by police
officers who used hand signals. However a gas leak one month after the setting-up injured
severely the police in charge of the device at one and the same time that people started
refusing traffic lights.

Surprisingly it returned in 1912 when car development was on the rise so as to car mishaps.
The electric form of traffic signal was created by LESTER WIRE. Two years after the renewed
model included a buzzer which warned of colour changes, fire and police stations also could
control in case of an emergency.

By 1922 most traffic lights where automated on timers.

GARETT MORGAN added the third light position instead of two, the ambar position was made
in order to warn that a stop was coming and it greatly reduced the risk of traffic accidents .

Currently traffic lights are completely automated??. In fact Toronto in Canada was the first city
which completely computerize its entire traffic signal system by 1963.

followed by the name of a brand in order to advertise them.

Currently devices are being perfected, for instance the multinational corporation Siemens is
developing a project called Tampa which would be able to connect directly the traffic light with
the car, by sending messages which would be shown in the car´s screen in order to improve
safety and efficiency.

FUTURE
The way ahead is the demise of traffic lights. According to MIT SENSESEABLE CITY LAB
researchers cars won’t need to stop and they will automatically adjust their speed while
maintaining the safety distances between vehicles. There is need to take pedestrians and
bicyclists into account /These developments
