Ransdell, Kelley - Superintendent Friday, September 21, 2018 11:20 AM Ash, Andrea : Chariton, John Subject: RE: WHAST1 Investigating Radon Levels In Schools (CORRECTION) Attachments: 20180920143133 pdf *External Email - Be Suspicious of Attachments, Links and Requests for Login Information* Andrea, To address your policy questions contained in the ORR, we do not currently have a policy that specifically addresses radon testing. We did do some testing which began in October, 2016. The guidelines that we followed are below: ‘* Test lower-level school areas at highest risk for elevated radon concentrations. © Ifresults are below 2.0 pCi/L, per EPA guidelines, conduct biennial testing © Ifresults are 2.0-3.9 pCi/L, conduct annual testing © Ifresults are 4.0+ pCi/L conduct long-term school-year testing, coupled with mitigation efforts and periodic short-term testing With regards to your request for testing results, testing was conducted by our maintenance director from October, 2016, through March, 2017, with results as follows: ‘+ Anchorage Public School Lower Level Room 114 — Under 2.0 pCi/L * Anchorage Public School Lower Level Room 105 ~ Under 2.0 pCi/L * Anchorage Public School Lower Level Room 116 - Under 2.0 pCi/L * Anchorage Public School Lower Level Room 110 - Under 2.0 pCi/L * Anchorage Independent School District Office Room 102- Under 2.0 pCi/L As you mentioned, on Friday | emailed you results for testing conducted August 31, 2018 through September 4, 2018. Of over 30 spaces tested, two offices contained within the same office suite, were at or slightly above 4.0 pCi/L. Those areas have been addressed under the guidance of Douglas W. Peters and Associates, Inc. Avent supplying fresh air to the HVAC system servicing the office suite was discovered to be in the closed position. The vent was opened and remains open. We have been testing with a digital monitor since opening the fresh air vent and digital readings have been in the range of 1.3 to 2.4 pCi/L. We will be conducting follow-up sampler testing to ensure that opening the vent has corrected the issue and will be conducting a long-term test of the space running through the remainder of the school year. There is a purchase order (attached) for recent follow-up testing that we attempted, but that we were unable to complete due to flooding on our property. Thanks, Kelley Ransdell
