News Title 01: Japan’s Abe heads for extended term
after party vote
 Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won a ruling party
leadership vote, setting him on track to become
Japan's longest-serving premier and try to cement
his legacy, including by revising the pacifist
constitution.
 If Abe, who resigned abruptly after a troubled
2006-2007 term, stays in office through November
2019, he will have exceeded the 2,886 days
marked by Taro Katsura in the early 20th century.
NATIONAL AFFAIRS
News Title 01: BRICS bank approves $525 million loan
for infra projects in Madhya Pradesh
 The New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS
countries has approved a $525-million loan to
Madhya Pradesh for infrastructure projects.
 The Board of Directors of the NDB on Wednesday
approved a $350-million loan for the Major
District Roads Project II of Madhya Pradesh and
$175 million for building and upgrading 350
bridges.
 The NDB will also provide a $175-million loan to
the Madhya Pradesh Bridges Project, under which
350 bridges will be built or upgraded.
 The NDB board also approved a non-sovereign
loan of ₹300 million to SIBUR Holding of Russia for
environmentally-sustainable infrastructure
development related to the Zap SibNefteKhim
project.
 The NDB was set up by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China and South Africa) nations to promote
green and infrastructure projects in the member
countries.

biotechnology university

 India's first Biotechnology University will take
shape in Gujarat with the State legislative
assembly set to pass a Bill for establishment of the
country’s first such university.
 It will aim to boost research, innovation and
entrepreneurship in the sector.
News Title 03: Economy will double to $5 trillion by
2022, says Modi
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the size of
Indian economy would double to $5 trillion by
2022, with manufacturing and agriculture
contributing $1 trillion each.
 Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of
India International Convention and Expo Centre in
New Delhi, he cited this week’s announcement of
the proposed merger of Dena Bank, Vijaya Bank
and Bank of Baroda to create the country’s third
largest lender.
News Title 04: Punjab nod for FRBM Act
implementation
 The Punjab Cabinet gave its approval to rules for
implementation of the Punjab Fiscal Responsibility
and Budget Management (FRBM) Act, 2003.
 The move will help the State achieve specific fiscal
targets within a stipulated time period to avail of
the benefits of the Centre’s Debt Consolidation and
Relief Facility for States.
 Cabinet also gave its approval for setting up of a
ropeway between Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi
in public-private-partnership mode to promote
tourism in the State.
News Title 05: About 271 million Indians moved out of
poverty from 2005 to 2016
 About 271 million people in India moved out of
poverty in the decade since 2005-06 and the
poverty rate in the country nearly halved from 55
to 20 percent over the 10-year period, according to
latest estimates released.

Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford
Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)
said that about 1.3 billion people live in
multidimensional poverty globally.
 This is almost a quarter of the population of the
104 countries for which the 2018 MPI is
calculated.
 Of these 1.3 billion, almost half (46 per cent) are
thought to be living in severe poverty and are
deprived in at least half of the dimensions covered
in the MPI.
 India is the first country for which progress over
time has been estimated.

News Title 01: Govt. appoints 14 EDs to public sector
News Title 01: Corporation Bank in pact with NeSL
 Corporation Bank has signed an information utility
(IU) agreement with National e-Governance
Services Ltd (NeSL), the first IU registered with the
Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI),
to share financial and security information under
IBBI (IU) Regulation 2017.
 IUs function under the regulatory supervision of
IBBI.
 They serve the needs of the banking system by
providing data to insolvency professionals,
adjudicating authority and the Insolvency and
Bankruptcy Board of India on the proof of
borrowing, proof of default and security interest
data in respect of NCLT cases while adhering to
prescribed standards of information security.
 The agreement was signed here in the presence of
Jai Kumar Garg, Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer of Corporation Bank, Gopal Murli
Bhagat, Executive Director of the bank, and U
Venkata Rao, Vice-President (IU Operations) of
NeSL.

News Title 02: SBI raises $650 mn via maiden green
bond issuance
 State Bank of India, the country’s largest
commercial bank, priced its maiden green bond
issuance.
 SBI raised $650 million at a coupon rate of T + 165
bps.
 The bond is benchmarked against five-year US
treasury.
 The bonds will be listed on Singapore SGX and the
India INX, Gift City.
 DBS Bank Ltd., HSBC, MUFG, FAB and SBI Capital
Markets acted as joint book-runners and joint lead
managers for this offering.
APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNS

 Shanti Lal Jain and Vikramaditya Singh Khichi have
been appointed as executive directors in the Bank
of Baroda initially for a period of three years.
 Currently Mr. Jain is the general manager of
Allahabad Bank and Mr. Khichi is the general
manager in Dena Bank.
 Agyey Kumar Azad, general manager (GM) of the
Bank of India, has been named as executive
director of Punjab National Bank.
 Gopal Singh Gusain and Manas Ranjan Biswal have
been appointed as executive directors in the Union
Bank of India initially for a period of three years.
Both are working as general managers in the
Punjab National Bank.
 Vijay Dube, the GM of Vijaya Bank, will be
executive director in the Oriental Bank of
Commerce.
 Alok Srivastava, GM of Punjab National Bank, has
been appointed as executive director in the Central
Bank of India.

independent director on board of Air India
 D. Purandeswari has been appointed an
independent director on the board of Air India Ltd.

OBITUARY

News Title 01: Wrestling coach Yashvir dead

 Noted wrestling coach Yashvir Singh passed away.
 Yashvir was the only Indian to have been
decorated with the award of best coach by FILA.
 Yashvir was Sushil Kumar’s coach when he won
his first two international titles — World cadet
championships in England and Poland.
 In season 3 of the Pro Wrestling League, Yashvir,
who was honoured with the Dronacharya award in
2012, had coached the UP Dangal team.
