2 Speed Propulsion System

Fully integrated system for vessels with variations in power requirements

LOWERING PROPELLER NOISE HIGH QUALITY SAVES FUEL

“ REDUCING FUEL IN
LOW RPM CONDITIONS

OVERVIEW

The 2 Speed Reduction Gear is a fully integrated solution

to provide the option for two steps of different propeller
speed in a diesel mechanical configuration.

Scana Propulsion has developed the 2 Speed Reduction

Gear to generate huge savings in fuel costs.

Efficiency Benefits
Effects of reducing RPM with the 2 Speed Reduction Gear

The 2 speed Reduction Gear is a valuable investment for vessels with different kinds of operational
profiles, some demanding little energy to the propeller (e.g. searching) and others with high propeller
power requirements (e.g. full-speed cruising).
The graph below shows the direct effect of reducing the RPM using the 2 Speed Reduction Gear.

ZERO PITCH LOSS REDUCING ZERO PITCH LOSS

Zero pitch loss is the loss of energy

caused by rotating the propeller without
giving thrust to the vessel.

Reducing the propeller rpm by 50% results

in approximately 80% reduction in power
needed to rotate the propeller.

OPTIONAL FEATURES TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY FURTHER

The optional features available with the 2 Speed

Reduction Gear can increase efficiency depending
on the vessel’s requirements. The following extras
can be added to this flexible solution:

• PTO / PTI
• Boost
• Frequency Converter
• Switchboard
• Auxillary Generator
