MEC4111 Mechanical Engineering Design

Laboratory 1 – Design a motor mounting bracket

1. Objectives

To enable students to fulfil the fundamental requirements of part and assembly design.

2. Introduction

Students are required to design a mounting bracket for a motor. The bracket is in turn to
be mounted on to a gearbox (see Fig. 1).

Effort must be put to ensure proper design for machining and assembly. After detail design
in 3D CAD, engineering drawings are also required to be produced.

3. Design Requirements

3.1 The motor to be held by the bracket is FA-130 DC motor (see Appendix 6.1)

3.2 A pinion (CAD file provided) is mounted on to the motor’s shaft with press fit before
the motor is mounted in the bracket.

3.3 The bracket is made of 5 mm thick Aluminum plates, which are processed by
machining and joint with screws.

3.4 The motor can be mounted and dismounted easily without special tools.

3.5 Features must be provided to resist the torque transmitted by the motor.

3.6 The bracket is secured and located on the gearbox with shoulder screw (CAD files
provided).

4. Design Procedure:

4.1 Study and model with 3D CAD the relevant features of the motor (Take Supp. Notes I
as reference).

4.2 Fig. 2 shows two possible configurations of the bracket plates.

4.4 Study Appendix 6.2 and the provided CAD files of the shoulder screw and the
gearbox, then sketch the features added on the endplates in order to meet Design
Requirement 3.6:

4.5 In 3D CAD, model and verify your assembly design (Take Supp. Notes II as
reference, but make appropriate changes so as to implement your own design
solutions concluded in procedures 4.3 & 4.4.).
Also add details such as chamfers to ease the assembly process.

5. Submission

5.1 The sketches & justifications in procedures 4.2 – 4.4.

5.2 The 3D models of the assembly with the provided CAD files

5.4 Hard copy of detailed part drawings of the two end plates (Take Supp. Notes III as
