The First 80 Days: Mayor David Horton

Artis College of Science and
Technology, and now the newest
mayor, David Horton sat down
with the Tartan to talk about his
first 80 days since being sworn
in on July 2.
“It’s fantastic, we really
love working for this great
community. Trying to make good
things happen for the citizens of
Radford whether they be here at
Radford University or a Radford
resident.” Horton said.
The first-time mayor
admitted to there being a steep
learning curve when assuming
public office.
“I think I’ve learned that
there are lots of different
solutions to the problems we
have and that working together
we can find those answers
as a team. You learn a lot of
little things that you didn’t
necessarily know about that
are procedural, and a lot of
things that are wonkish, policy
wonkish, that are out there. But
for the most part it’s learning
about how to get those things
accomplished that will solve
problems for a lot of people in
our community.”
Being a longtime resident
has helped Horton recognize
some of the issues that face the
community. One of Horton’s
most prominent initiatives has
been to help bring businesses
to Radford, including new
businesses like Sweet & Savory
Donuts and Bagels.
Horton explained that
it’s challenging to bring new
businesses to Radford, “We
have a wonderful community,
we have fantastic resources to
make things happen here, but
it is always a challenge to find
the right business mix. The
right investor, property, the
marketing. Everything that can
work to really make a business
successful here in Radford.”
He continued, “One of the
things we’re trying to do is
to try and make people more
aware of the opportunities that
are available to them and some
of the resources that we have
available to them to help their

The Virginia Main Street
Program is a program developed
by the Virginia Department
of Housing and Community
Development which helps
revitalize the downtown districts
of cities and communities.
“Radford had been a member
of the Main Street Program, we
then had to stop that program
for a little while after some
re-direction was trying to be
determined. We stopped that
about five years ago, but the
idea was that it was just going
to be a pause for maybe a year,
maybe two years and time got
away where we needed to bring
it back this year.”
“It’s a great new
opportunity.” Horton said,
“The program has evolved
significantly from what it was
before and, so, we are moving in
new directions with that.”
Horton also spoke on
the program’s influence
of businesses in Radford,
“Historically, a number of
businesses in Radford have
benefitted from being part of
the Main Street Program. We
think that’s an important key to
moving us forward now.”
“We want to build up all
parts of our community,” Horton
added. “Our goal is to make
Radford the place where people
want to spend their time, where
they want to engage with others,
and where they really want to
celebrate life.”
Mayor Horton has also made
himself a presence via social
media. On Facebook, Horton
regularly shares updates from
the Radford City Government
page and goes live from events,
local businesses, and even
from City Council meetings
in an attempt to get more
residents involved with the city
government.
“Social media is a part of our
lives, both good and bad, in a
lot of ways. But social media is
helping people find out about
events, helps people interact
and communicate, and it’s an
opportunity for us to share
more about this wonderful
community,” said Horton.
“If you can get an entire
community sharing messages,
sharing thoughts, and engaging
at that level, you can make a lot
of great things happen.”
Horton has also seen some
criticism via social media. The
day after his inauguration,
during a city council meeting,
the administration considered
how to re-structure their
meetings. It was decided that
instead of a moment of prayer at
the beginning of the meeting, it
would be considered a “moment
of reflection” said Horton.

is it gives people an opportunity
to have a moment of silence that
is proceeded by an inspirational
statement … and we try to
provide a statement that brings
us all together and in the same
place. We then have some quiet
time where you can prepare for
the meeting in a way you see fit.

meditate, you can think about
what’s on the agenda you may
want to participate with.”

freedoms that are afforded to
us. One of those freedoms is the
freedom of religion.”
In regards to the criticism
of this change, Horton recalled,
“Some people didn’t like it, it
was a change. Change is hard
and I completely recognize
that can be a difficult thing for
some people to adjust to. My
hope was that they heard what
we were saying. That it isn’t an
elimination of prayer, it’s just
the opposite actually. It provides
an avenue to protect the way
you want to pray, your neighbor
wants to pray, or however, you
want to prepare during that
moment of reflection. That
moment of silence.”
“For those who are unhappy
with it, I hope that they’re seeing
how we’re doing this [and that]
they’re becoming happier with
what we are doing. Some may
not be happy. What was done
before was more of a spoken
common prayer for everyone to
gather and some felt that’s the
only way to have that type of

Discusses
Alcoholism
and Drug
Addiction
With Panel
and Film

A
lcohol has been a leading
cause of addiction for a
long time. This addiction
is also an illness, yet people have
recognized that in a bad light.
However, in the past couple
of years, there have been 12-
step group systems which work
through 12 steps to recovery.
The Substance Abuse and
Violence Education Support
(SAVES) program hosted a film
and panel about recovery and
how to seek help for addiction.
The program started off with
a film called “The Anonymous
People.”

words can affect recovery and
how different group systems
around the world have been
formed.

important to go in this new
direction and we really respect
everyone’s opinion on it.”
“It’s okay if you don’t agree
with me on everything,” Horton
said. “I’m fine with that because
we want to make the best
decisions possible and to make
that happen you have to feel free
to say, ‘I don’t agree with what
you thought’ and I can address
that.”

a car accident due to drinking,
and a high school in Boston,
Massachusetts that accepts
people that are going through
this.
There are around 23 million
people in recovery and still
counting today.
The film was about an hour
long, and the presentation
ended with a panel. There were
four people at the panel who
have been through this situation
that are now sober and still
going strong.
The panel went on for about
30 minutes answering questions
that the audience had sent in
anonymously through text. The
first question was, “Can you
challenge since taking the oath
of office has been the business
of the position. “The things that
you think you’ll be dealing with
are rarely the things you’ll be
dealing with.”
Horton goes on to talk about
how tasks can come from all
directions that take a lot of
both physical and mental time
to remedy. “You want to do the
best job you can. You want to
serve the people in the best way
possible. To do that it takes a lot
of thought and preparation and
effort.”

alcohol back in 2004. Stewart
also had a felony conviction for

in 2011-13 and faced some
serious consequences involving
alcohol and ended up getting
help.

Lastly, Anna’s story started
off just like any other college
student. She thought that she
was like any other student,
drinking and going to parties
every weekend, but she was
actually abusing alcohol.  She
had to drop out eventually,
and then it went downhill from
there.
She started feeling better
when she began going to self-
help groups.
The questions asked were
mostly related to how we can
teach this topic in a proper class
setting, and how we can help
one another before things get
out of hand.
Armin responded from
his experience that not many
people accept alcoholics in the
community, but if we held more

members have, is to look at

great would it be to go to a

night of the week and hear a

Anna said, “If I didn’t have
a drink, then that wouldn’t be
socializing for me.” It reminded
me that there are other ways
that you can be social without
drinking.  You must find the right
group of friends in a setting that
you are comfortable with.
Drinking isn’t always
necessary to be social.

if you need help with anything
related to this. The moral of this
presentation was that there’s
always a path out and that you
too can do it.

We had our scare with
Hurricane Florence, but there
are still many days of sunshine
to enjoy. There is always this
feeling with studying that you
must chain yourself to a desk.
Why not grab that 10-pound
textbook and enjoy those 80
pages in the sun?
Saying that this article
promised fun things to do on
campus, I suggest grabbing a
couple of friends and hanging
out on the grass. Bring a speaker
along and blare some obnoxious
music while you are at it. If
you’re feeling a little more
solitary, enjoy that book you
have meant to read or of course,
bring along the newest issue of
The Tartan. Wink-wink.
New River
Staying hopeful about this
weather, The New River is my
favorite place in Radford. I would
even go as far to say that I am
an advocate for The New River.
But if you don’t fancy getting
your toes wet - there is always
the option of hanging (in a safe
space) along the river bank.
However, what we all need to
be doing is tubing.
Take your tube, and some
people you don’t mind floating
with for two hours, to the top
of the river. Tie all your tubes
together to make some sort of
Krispy Kreme looking ship and
let the river take you down-
stream. I would recommend
taking an extra floatation
device for essential snacks and
beverages.
If you end up in
Christiansburg, you’ve gone too
far.
Sports Games
It’s time to dawn your
Radford colors. You’ve already
blown the bank on all the
merchandise at the bookstore,
and maybe it is time to put that
over-priced jumper to good use.
You don’t have to understand
every rule in soccer to enjoy
a game. Get excited about
supporting your college and
the excuse to eat an over-sized
pretzel.
The Bonnie
I don’t want to call our girl
Bonnie “cheap,” but she is. If
you have a flex meal plan, you
can save 50 to 70 percent on all
dining purchases.
The Hulbert Center (aka The
Bonnie) is a host to a range of
free activities, especially in the
Game Room. From ping-pong to
board games, the Bonnie can be
enjoyed on those rainy weekends
or a late weeknight that calls for
some distressing.
If you are feeling like a big
spender, and payday has come
around, plus you want to go all
out, rumor has it that bowling is
only three dollars. Extravagant I
know.
Also, if you are tired of all
your buddies huddling around
an 11-inch laptop screen for
movie night, the Bonnie is here
to help.
Radford offers free film
screenings throughout the
weekend, all you need to do
is bring your Radford ID plus
popcorn and/or a cute date.
Like I said above, there are
so many activities you can find
on campus and around the city.
Treat yourself to some guilt-
free fun throughout the week
without having to blow all your
money away.

Finding Your Perfect Starbucks Drink

Do I want tea? Do I want
hot chocolate? Do I want my
coffee iced or hot? Do I want a
macchiato or a Frappuccino?
What exactly is a macchiato and
how well does it taste?
What are the sizes because I
don’t see small, medium, large,
or extra-large?
Starbucks is the home of
sizes that no one understands
unless he or she’s a regular.
Luckily, the Starbucks on
Radford University’s campus
has a chalkboard post that
explains the sizes: tall (small),
grande (medium), venti (large),
and trenta (extra-large).
Stepping into a Starbucks
can be like stepping into a world
according to some of the
University’s students:
Freshman, Khyler Jackson
said she likes an iced caramel
macchiato.
Carlos Miranda said he
gets horchata and almond milk
because the sweet cinnamon
taste reminds of his time back in
Mexico.
If you’re not a coffee lover,
then you would appreciate
a venti white chocolate
peppermint mocha frappe;
this is freshman Eli Ayers’ go-
to drink. Another chocolate
lover, Lily Salerno treats herself
with a double chocolate chip
frappe.
Ariel Kern, a design
management major, likes to
keep it nice and simple with a
tasty and trendy white chocolate
fruit iced tea with lemonade. A

However, have you ever
walked into Starbucks and
bought a drink that touched
your soul? A drink so amazing,
no matter the calories, just a sip
would make every stress; every
worry would wash away.
Well I have, this drink is
more than just a drink, it’s a
friend, a tasty friend, that cheers
me up and is gone in less than
10 minutes.
My perfect drink is an ultra
caramel frappe with extra
whipped cream, caramel drizzle,
and mocha drizzle. It’s pure
heaven. This drink is probably
full of calories and definitely full
of sugar, but I could never resist

of confusion, albeit a tasty,

their go-to beverages and I
was surprised by the flavorful

Movie Versus Book Debate

T
he long-standing debate
of whether the book or
the movie is better has
divided book-lovers, movie-
goers, and entertainment-
seekers for years.
Those who lean toward
books couldn’t imagine a movie
adaptation ever being able to
capture what is all contained
inside the pages of a book. On
the other hand, movie-lovers
feel the opposite. They may
know a story-line or even read
the book first, but they often
think the movie brings the true
magic to the story.
I can see both sides of the
argument. As an English major,
a writer, and a person who reads
regularly, I tend to lean a little
more towards the book side of
the debate.
With this in mind, I have also
felt that some movie adaptations
were as good as the book or even
better than the book. Yes, there
have even been a few times that
I’ve read a book, not liked it, but
ended up enjoying the movie
adaptation.
I think it mostly depends on
the type of story being told and
the way in which it’s presented.
A lot of it isn’t preferenced;
it’s just that some stories are
better in print, while others look
better played out on a movie
screen. It takes a particular type
of magic for both.
I always find it amusing
when there are a book and a
movie where I can compare
the two and pick out the best
parts from each. I love seeing
the way a director envisions a
story playing out and how he or
she captures it on screen, even
though it may be different than
what I had in my head when I
first read it the book.
With that being said, I’ve
never gotten offended when a
movie adaptation is not exactly
what I’d imagined or even
hoped it would be. Whether
I’m surprised or disappointed, I
try to appreciate that different
people can read the same text
and have so many different
ideas that might be unique and
different from anyone else’s.
To become upset when a
movie isn’t exactly like the
book, or to give up on the story
because it’s not what we might
have expected, doesn’t give
credit to the artist’s vision. Even
if it’s not our vision, it’s still a
vision.
The book versus movie
debate goes to show that the
ways that each of us interpret
the same story is unique and
beautiful. Just because our
interpretation doesn’t exactly
match up with everyone else’s,
doesn’t mean it isn’t right.
It’s easy sometimes to get
caught up in the parts of a book
that are missing in the movie or
a character not looking exactly
how you’d hoped. I believe it’s
important to try to view books
and their subsequent film as
different pieces of art that
should be seen in different ways.

Home Opener Ends With a Win for Women’s Soccer

R
adford’s Women’s Soccer
wins big, after a brilliant
second-half performance,
to top Big South conference
opponent Campbell 4-0 in their
first home game of this season.
A great outing by the
Highlanders sees them increase
their win streak to five-in-a-
row after beating Campbell,
moving their record to 5-1-1 for
the season and 1-0 in Big South
conference play. This kicks off
the team’s home play for the
season in a positive way after
the impressive start.
The game was a tale of
two different halves. Radford
managed eight shots to
Campbell’s seven in the first,
while Campbell managed one
extra corner kick getting six to
Radford’s five. The game looked
to be a deadlock as both teams
controlled the ball and neither

looked to break the others
defense open.
Campbell’s defense was like a
brick wall early in the game, and
their offense looked impressive
as well, earning a corner kick
in the opening seconds of the
game. Though, as the first half
progressed, Radford became
more and more aggressive,
showing great counter attacks
and getting most of their shots
toward the end of the first half.
Then the second half
happened. Radford took over
twice as many shots (13)
as Campbell (5) was able to
manage. The Highlanders came
out blazing in the second half.
They controlled the ball down
the sidelines and sent in cross
after cross till finally in the 53rd
minute when Jessica Wollmann
broke through with the game
opener.
With a 1-0 lead, the
Highlanders barrage continued
as they managed three more

goals in a 13-minute span to
increase their lead to 4-0.
Though two of these goals
came at the unlucky expense
of Campbell defender Anna
Brantley. Brantley was in the
wrong place at the wrong time
twice, as two Radford crosses
bounced off the defender and
found the back of the net.
The Highlanders continued
to press ever so forward, with
Nelia Perez earning her second
goal of the season in the 66th
minute making the lead 4-0.
Though she didn’t score a goal,
Jasmine Casarez put in an
impressive display shooting the
ball a game-high six times with
two of those shots finding a
target on the goal.
Though none of her shots
ever found the back of the net,
Casarez did assist Perez on the
last goal of the game. Radford
goalie Courtenay Kaplan gave
an impressive display adding
another clean sheet to her
resume keeping Campbell
scoreless in the game.
Radford’s Head Coach Ben
Sohrabi remarked about the
different second half by stating
“After regrouping at halftime it
seemed our entire team made
the necessary adjustments to get
a win.”
This game was the first
time since 2013 that Radford’s
Women’s Soccer managed a
win against Campbell. Jessica
Wollman is also one more
game-winning goal away for
tying Radford’s record with
nine. Radford Women’s Soccer
will look to continue their
winning ways, in the Big South
Conference, as they travel to
Gardner-Webb in North Carolina
on Saturday.
The Highlander will return
home to Cupp Stadium to face
conference foe Longwood on
Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Camille Collier Named Top Thirty Under 30

he Women’s Basketball
Coaches Association
(WBCA) announced their
top Thirty Under 30 list for 2018
this past March, following the
2017-18 basketball season.
The Thirty Under 30 program
was created by the WBCA to
acknowledge 30 up-and-coming
women’s basketball coaches at
the age of 30 or below.
The honorees are recognized
for their involvement in
community service, mentorship,
professional manner, and
association involvement.
Radford women’s basketball
assistant coach Camille Collier
was one of the 30 coaches to be
honored for last year’s season.

Collier assisted in the
development of Janayla White
and Jayda Worthy as they were
both placed on the All-Big South
teams. Worthy was the fourth
player in program history to
be named Big South Defensive
Player of the Year.
Before Collier was a coach,
she was a player. Playing four
years for Wake Forest, she was
named All-Academic team as a
freshman leading the ACC with
8.2 scoring average as well as
landing on the ACC Honor Roll
two times. She finished off her
time as a Demon Deacon, leading
the women to a 20-win season
and a birth in the Women’s
National Invitation tournament
at the end of the 2012 season.
Collier received a bachelor’s
degree in Sociology and a
master’s degree in Education
while serving as a graduate
assistant coach at Georgia Tech.
Prior to joining the Radford
coaching staff in 2017, Collier
was an assistant coach for
Jacksonville College where she
worked for four seasons.
During her time with the
Dolphins, she worked as a
recruiting coordinator and
saw that they claimed its first-
ever Atlantic Sun Conference
Championship with a 22-11
record.

players on and off the court.
Head Coach Mike McGuire said
to the Big South news team that
she, “exemplifies a lot of great
qualities in the day-to-day work
of our profession. Her drive,
determination, initiative and
competitiveness is outstanding.
Our profession needs more
young coaches like her.”
McGuire went on to say that
Collier has a bright future in
the coaching profession as she
continues to impact all of the
student-athletes she has the
pleasure of coming into contact
with.
This past season the
Highlanders boasted an increase
in statistics, ranging from 420
assists to have the fifth best
scoring defense in the country,
holding opponents to 52.9
points a game.
Collier’s response to the
Big South news team on her
Thirty Under 30 recognition: “I
am humbled and thankful to be
recognized among a great group
of coaches in our profession.
I am very appreciative of the
opportunity to learn from
Coach McGuire and to coach
great student-athletes who
continuously push me to become
a better coach.”
We look forward to the
excellent coaching and
mentoring Collier will bring this
season and hope to have another
outstanding year!
The Highlanders start the
year off against South Carolina
State on Nov. 7.
