Maximum Modulation Current to Solenoid Valves - Calibrate

SMCS Code: 5479-524; 7610-524-JV

Manual Adjustment Of Maximum Modulation Current To

Solenoid Valves
Note: The following steps are not necessary to obtain satisfactory operation of the implement
controls. The control function can be customized or the control function can be fine tuned by using
the steps that follow.

1. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service connector that is located behind the fuse
access door in the right rear corner of the cab.

2. Operate the machine until the hydraulic oil reaches operating temperature.

3. For the 980G, proceed to Step 5.

4. Enter mode 7 for the calibration. From the operator mode, press the "SCROLL" switch until
submode 1 appears for manual calibration. Proceed to Step 6.

5. Enter mode 6 for the calibration. From the operator mode, press the "SCROLL" switch until
submode 1 appears for manual calibration.

6. The maximum lift modulation current is displayed. The format of the display will be "1 -###". The
last three numbers represent the maximum current in milliamperes. The maximum modulation
current can be increased by momentarily depressing the "CLEAR" switch. The current will increase
immediately by 3 milliamperes when the "CLEAR" switch is depressed. Pressing and holding the
"CLEAR" switch for more than 1 second will cause the current reading to begin scrolling quickly
until the "CLEAR" switch is released. The maximum modulation current can be decreased by
momentarily pressing the "-" switch or the operator switch that is located on the dash panel.

Setting the maximum lift modulation current lower will decrease the lift speed. This will give better
controllability of the lift function. Increasing the maximum lift modulation current will increase the
lift speed until the point of maximum flow from the main valve is achieved.

Note: Increasing the maximum lift modulation current above the point of maximum flow has no
effect on the lift speed. This will only decrease controllability.

Maximum lift speed can be verified by slowly modulating the lift lever into the detent position. If a
sudden increase in the speed of the lift arm is detected, the maximum lift modulation current is too
low. The current should be increased. The maximum lift modulation current should be increased
until no change in speed of the lift arm is detected. This speed change would be noticed when the left
lever is moved into the detent position.

If no increase in the speed is felt, the current should be changed to a value low enough until an
increase in the speed is felt. Repeat Step 6 until the bump is no longer present.

7. Press the "SCROLL" switch. Now, the maximum lower modulation current will be displayed. The

format of the display will be "2 -###". The last three numbers represent the maximum lower
modulation current in milliamperes. The default value for the maximum lower modulation current is
650 milliamperes.

In most cases, the default value will give satisfactory control of the lower function. The maximum
lower modulation current should not be increased significantly from the default setting. The float
function may operate before the lift lever reaches the detent position for lowering. Maximum lower
speed can always be achieved by putting the lift lever in the float detent. Setting the maximum lower
modulation current higher or lower than the default may improve the function of the lower kickout.

8. Press the "SCROLL" switch. Now, the maximum modulation current for the tiltback will be
displayed. The format of the display will be "3 -###". The last three numbers represent the maximum
rack modulation current in milliamperes. To adjust the maximum rack modulation current, follow
the same procedure that is outlined in Step 6 for the maximum lift modulation current.

9. Press the "SCROLL" switch. Now, the maximum dump modulation current will be displayed. The
format of the display will be "4 -###". The last three numbers represent the maximum dump
modulation current in milliamperes. To adjust the maximum dump modulation current, follow the
same procedure that is outlined in Step 6 for the maximum lift modulation current.

10. Press the "SCROLL" switch. Now, the maximum forward modulation current for the auxiliary
lever will be displayed. The format of the display will be "5 -###". The last three numbers represent
the maximum forward modulation current for the auxiliary function in milliamperes. If no auxiliary
function is available, the display will return to sensor reading for the lift arm. To adjust the
maximum forward modulation current for the auxiliary lever, follow the same procedure that is
outlined in Step 6 for the maximum lift modulation current.

11. Press the "SCROLL" switch. Now, the maximum rearward modulation current for the auxiliary
lever will be displayed. The format of the display will be "6 -###". The last three numbers represent
the maximum rearward modulation current for the auxiliary lever in milliamperes. Table 12 lists the
display and the functions that can be adjusted. If no auxiliary function is available, the display will
return to the sensor reading for the lift arm. To adjust the maximum rearward modulation current for
the auxiliary lever, follow the procedure that is outlined in Step 6 for the maximum lift modulation
current.

Current Is Adjusted Too Low.

· Implement hydraulics will be slower. The maximum cylinder speed will be reduced.
Current Is Adjusted Too High.

· Full hydraulic speed will be achieved before the lever reaches the detent position. This results in a
deterioration of modulation of the implement.

· When the lift arms are lowered, the float feature may activate prematurely before the detent is
reached.
