Problem statement

Culverts play a vital role by carrying water under sections of roadways to prevent flooding during
periods of heavy rainfall and reduce erosion of soil formations beneath and around the road’s
surface. Therefore, the culvert must always be clean and keeping it free of blockages.
Unfortunately, in the past culverts have not been given the attention they deserve which has
resulted in damages to the structures themselves, as well as roads, ditches, and other property, and
can potentially cause serious injuries. The reasons the culverts have not been clean and
maintenance is due to the high cost, take a long time and requires a lot of energy. Therefore, we
create a culverts cleaning tool that will ease our work. Therefore, to clear up the problem we
created a device namely as culvert cleaning tools with a view to facilitate our work, accelerate our
work, low cost and save energy.

Literature Review

Allyson E. Clark, Ben C. Creed, Wilderich A. White, & Steven A. Velinsky (2012) Culvert
Cleaning Equipment Options. Research of Evaluation of New Technology in Culvert Cleaning,
CA12-1954, 7-13.

The author identified various methods to clean the culverts by using several cleaning
equipments depend on its conditions and situations. These methods include vacuum truck with
jetter, walk-behind loader, dragline system, horizontal drilling and tunnel mucker. In this research,
the most commonly used equipment for culvert cleaning is a vacuum truck with a jetter. However,
large amounts of water are required during the operation and the water mixture must be handled
and disposed of properly. Another solution for cleaning culverts is to use a horizontal directional
drill. Hurk Underground Technologies produces a horizontal directional drill for the purpose of
cleaning culverts. It has multiple attachments that allow it to clean culverts with a variety of shapes
and sizes.
Jeff Griffin (2016) New Reaming Tool Clears Debris, Rock From Culverts. Article of First
Look,12.

Jeff Griffin (2016) introduced a new line of reaming tools for clearing debris and rock from
drainage culverts called Infinity Tool Mfg. The culvert reaming tool design developed by Harr
Technologies uses an internal coil to draw debris into a holding cylinder so it can be removed from
the drainage structure. Compared to earlier versions, the new tools use the stem connections and
will fit most any equipment that will support a rotation attachment such as a post hole auger
attachment. The tool is attached and rotated by the host machine. As the machine moves forward
with the tool rotating, debris is loaded inside the cylinder. Once the cylinder is loaded, the machine
backs up until the tool exits the structure; then reverses rotation to remove the debris.
