Our scholarships and awards celebrate your talent and commitment to your The Young Leaders Program (YLP) offered at Trinity College has been developing future

From the beginnings of the College in
1872, the Leeper Library has been part of
the College’s hub of historic and cultural
significance, as well as an excellent
academic resource. Here you can find
some quiet study space between classes.
The Gateway Building
The Gateway Building is a major gateway,
or interface, between Trinity College
and the University of Melbourne. It
offers direct pedestrian access for all
Foundation Studies students between
the College and University. Here you will
enjoy class time in your tutorial room
spaces, as well as in drama studios,
music practice rooms and a 300-seat
lecture theatre.

Meet your academics
Dr Sarah Dowling
Subject Leader: Literature,
and Literature lecturer
Sarah has been teaching literature at
Trinity College since 2016, and she has six
years of experience teaching literature
at universities prior to that. Her PhD
dissertation focused on the life’s work of
US Poet Laureate Charles Wright, and she
recently published research into theories
of trauma in literature. Sarah also has a
Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.
While she’s passionate about all forms of
literature, Sarah specialises in teaching
poetry, and she loves helping students
(even the reluctant ones) discover their own
appreciation for poetry. She also enjoys
exploring the possibilities for e-Learning,
blended learning and using technology in
the classroom, as well as incorporating
multimedia, games, movement and dramatic
expression into her lessons. Sarah became
the Subject Leader of Literature in 2018.

Andrew Oppenheim
Coordinator Extended Programs, and
Mathematics lecturer
Andrew has worked at Trinity in
Foundation Studies since 2002. He is a
thorough professional and dedicated
teacher. His mathematics classroom is
an active one in which students discuss
with each other and make discoveries
with the aid of whiteboards and hand-held
technology. He is always looking out for
new challenges, large or small, which
improve the on-campus experience of
students and staff.
Andrew has degrees in Arts and Science
and a Diploma of Education, all from the
University of Melbourne, and studied in
China during his undergraduate degree.
He enjoys working with students from
different countries as they progress
towards university education.
Dr Shuwen (Wendy) Cai
Accounting lecturer
Wendy has been teaching accounting at
Trinity College since 2015 and has held
academic positions at Monash University,
the Australian National University
and Deakin University since 2008. She
holds a Bachelor of Commerce from

Steven Smith
Drama and Chill Out lecturer
Steven is a theatre graduate of the
Victorian College of the Arts and a
Bachelor of Arts (University of Adelaide)
graduate. He has worked in professional
theatre, theatre in education, theatre
training and television. For over 20 years
he has performed as an improviser with
Melbourne Playback Theatre Company,
exploring the power of bringing personal
stories to life in performance.
As a director, he has worked extensively
in community theatre, particularly in
the context of mental health, touring to
Toronto with a Melbourne company for an
international festival collaboration in 2003.
Steven has taught in a range of settings,
including youth programs at the National
Theatre Drama School and St Martin’s
Youth Arts Centre. For a number of years he
lectured in drama at the Institute of Koorie
Education at Deakin University. A highlight
was staging student performances at
the 2008 World Indigenous People’s
Conference on Education in Melbourne.
Steven commenced at Trinity in 2016
and is excited to share with students
the broad range of life skills that drama
participation develops, as well as
supporting students settling into Trinity
through the Chill Out program.

Jill Lewis
English for Academic Purposes lecturer
Jill has been teaching English for Academic
Purposes at TCFS since 2016. She very
much enjoys working closely with students
to prepare them for the English language
demands of university, and especially
enjoys assisting newly arrived international
students as they adjust to all the different
aspects of life and learning in Australia.
Jill has seen how much TCFS students
benefit from participation in extracurricular
activities, and she assists students to get
involved in a number of activities, especially
involving musical performance.
Jill holds a Bachelor of Education, and
both the Cambridge CELTA and DELTA
qualifications. She is a passionate and
committed English language teacher whose
career has spanned 30 years in schools,
universities and adult education courses
both in Australia and overseas; she has
been a teacher, manager and examiner.
During this time, Jill has dedicated
herself to a number of projects, including
development of an online communication
skills course for overseas born health
professionals in Australia. In 2013, Jill was
awarded the Victorian Premier’s award
for Excellence in Language and Literacy
Provision.

Dr Stephen Fleischfresser
History of Ideas lecturer
Steve has been teaching History of Ideas at
TCFS since 2015 and is passionate about the
ability of history and philosophy to bolster
critical thinking, a vital skill in our media-
saturated age. Naturally, he is becoming
increasingly involved with the Trinity Life-
Skills Philosophy Club, where such critical
thinking skills can be put into practice.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree
and an Arts PhD in the interdiscipline of
History and Philosophy of Science from
the University of Melbourne. His doctoral
work was a philosophical critique of the
science of evolutionary psychology, and he
has an abiding interest in the philosophical
problems found at the intersection of biology
and culture.
Before coming to Trinity, he taught for
over a decade at the University of Melbourne,
lecturing for some years on the philosophical
history of biology, from Aristotle to
biotechnology.
As well as teaching at Trinity, Steve is also
a professional science journalist in his
spare time. He writes for one of the most
decorated popular science journals in
Australia, focusing on the biosciences.

Main and Fast Track intakes
The unique core curriculum is specifically

Extended intakes

EAP is part of the core subject

Education services for overseas
students legislative framework
Australia’s laws promote quality
education and consumer protection
for overseas students. These laws are
known as the Education Services for
Overseas Students (ESOS) framework,
and include the ESOS Act 2000 and the
National Code 2018. Trinity College
requests that you familiarise yourself with
your rights and responsibilities under
the ESOS framework prior to enrolling:

Attendance
In accordance with Australian visa conditions,
Trinity College monitors your attendance in
all lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.
If you do not achieve an 80% attendance
record in a particular semester you will
be in breach of your visa conditions and will
be reported to the Department of Home
Affairs (HA). If you are reported to HA you
will be at risk of having your visa cancelled.
Satisfactory academic progress
You must achieve satisfactory academic
results, as outlined in our policy, to continue
to study the program. If you do not meet the
requirements for progression, you may be
reported to the Department of Home Affairs
and your visa may be cancelled.

You and your parents are able to view
class attendance records, and mentor
and academic reports on the Trinity
College Community Portal, and are
informed by email if your attendance
is unsatisfactory.
Care arrangements for international
students under the age of 18
The Department of Home Affairs has
established special requirements relating
to your accommodation and welfare
if you are under the age of 18. If you are
under the age of 18 and not living with
a parent or guardian in Australia, you
must nominate a guardian or carer.
Trinity College is able to fulfil this
requirement and provides the care
arrangements for students under
the age of 18. Once arrangements have
been checked and deemed satisfactory,
a Confirmation of Appropriate
Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW)
document required by the Department
of Home Affairs for student visa
lodgement will be provided to the student.
Change of address
In accordance with your student visa
conditions, you must notify us within seven
days of any change to your Australian
residential address. Failure to do so puts you
in breach of your visa conditions. If you are
under 18 years of age you should not sign a
lease and/or move into new accommodation
before speaking to our Housing and
Accommodation Office or our Student Welfare
Office. You may be in breach of your student
visa conditions if you fail to comply.

communication to prospective students,
upon you or your parent/guardian's
consent. We may also undertake incidental
photographs of you as a participant in
group activities. If you, or your parent/
guardian do not wish for you to participate
in any promotional photography, please
contact the College in writing.
Age of students
Students must be at least 16 years of age
at the time of commencing studies in a
Trinity College Foundation Studies intake.
Use of social media
Under the supervision of your teachers,
you may be required to use social media
groups and online applications as part of
your classroom activities. Trinity College
has extensive protections in place when
using these applications and you are
agreeing to use them by accepting this
offer of enrolment.
