GM6 Functional units
Description

GM6 switchgear is made up of interconnected functional units, available as single-

busbar or double-busbar system. Each functional unit contains all the elements
needed to perform its function:
t a gas insulated, metalclad cubicle, for indoor use,
t a circuit breaker using SF6 as a breaking medium, sealed for life,
t a digital protection and control system.

Power connections are made between functional units by a busbar set located
inside a SF6 compartment. Steady electrical continuity of all metal frames is
ensured by connection of each functional unit’s earthing busbar to the switchgear’s
main earthing circuit.
Low voltage compartments, for protection relay (front) and auxiliary
relay-terminal board (rear) are provided.

Cubicle
The cubicle is an earthed, metallic enclosure, gas insulated switchgear that
complies with the requirements of the IEC 60298 standard.

The cubicle comprises four electrically independent compartments.

The busbar compartment is separate and independent from the circuit breaker
compartment, so that the circuit breaker can be replaced if necessary while
the busbars are energized. An inspection window enables a visual check of the
position of the busbar disconnector blades. The compartment using SF6 as
isolating medium, is situated in the top of the unit and it contains:
t the main busbars,
t the three-pole, two way busbar disconnector.

The circuit breaker compartment is composed of an alluminium housing filled

with SF6 and containing the circuit breaker poles.
An inspection window enables a visual check of the position of the line isolator and
earthing switch.
The compartment is located in the central part of the cubicle and it contains:
t the disconnectable circuit breaker,
t the three-pole, two way line disconnector (only single busbar system),
t the earthing switch,
t the bushing for receiving plug-in cable terminations.

The MV connection compartment is situated in the bottom of the cubicle and it

contains:
t the cable connection,
t the current transformer,
t the voltage transformer.

The Low Voltage compartments are separated from the Medium Voltage section;
the first is located in the top of the unit and it contains protection and control
system, while the other are located on the back and contains the low voltage
auxiliaries. Three basic cubicle lay-out are offered:
t incoming or outgoing feeder AD1/AD2,
t bus section CL1/CL2 and double busbar system,
t the busbar metering TT1.

Disconnectable circuit breaker

The circuit breaker SF1-G is designed in accordance with IEC 60056 standard and
it complies with the definition of «pressure sealed systems» given in IEC 60056
standard, appendix EE.
It is of the puffer type and uses the SF6 gas as a breaking and isolating medium.
The circuit breaker is maintenance free for life. In case of necessity it can be
replaced in short time because the main connections are made by sliding contacts.

In the protection system, the functional units are fitted with transformers designed
to supply the measurements and/or protection circuits:
t current transformers,
t voltage transformers,

The active parts are totally encapsulated in an integral epoxy resin molding
which serves a dual function:
t it ensures electrical insulation,
t it guarantees the assembly an excellent mechanical resistance.

GM6 Apparatus
SF1-G circuit breaker up to 36 kV

SF1-G circuit breaker

t The SF1-G circuit breakers are of the “puffer“ type and use SF6 gas
as a breaking and insulating medium.
They are composed of three poles mounted on a base which supports
the operating mechanism. Acording to IEC 56 App. EE (1987), the circuit breaker
is defined as a sealed pressure system, that is an assembly for which no further
gas processing is required during its expected operating life.
t The fundamental feature of the circuit breaker- essential for the very concept
of a fully gas insulated switchgear- is its very high dependability which means:
v high reliability,
v long mechanical life: the circuit breakers are designed for 10000 mechanical
operations with no need to replace parts with only ordinary maintenance of the
operating mechanism,
v long electrical life: the capacity of breaking load and short circuit current is much
higher than it is normally required in 30years of operational life. The circuit breakers
comply for the electrical endurance life whit Table IV of the ENEL (Italian National
Electricity Board) specification DY 1702 and IEC 56.
v no need for any maintenance on the active parts,
v manufactured under a fully quality assurance program.

Puffer type: operating principle

The main contacts and arcing contacts are initially closed (fig 1).
Precompression (fig 2)
When the contacts begin to open, the piston slightly compresses the SF6 gas
in the pressure chamber.
Arcing period (fig 3)
The arc strikes between the arcing contacts. The piston continues its downward
movement.
A small quantity of gas, directed by the insulating nozzle, is injected across the arc.
For the breaking of low currents, the arc is cooled by forced convection.
However, for high currents, thermal expansion causes the hot gases to move
toward the colder parts of the pole unit.
fig. 1 fig. 2 The distance between the two arcing contacts becomes sufficient for the current
to be broken when it reaches the zero point, due to the dielectric properties of SF6.
Sweeping overstroke (fig 4)
The moving parts finish their movement and the injection of cold gas continues until
the contacts are completely open.

Circuit breaker
The circuit breakers in the SF1-G range use SF6 for insulation and current
breaking. They are composed of three poles mounted on a base which supports
the operating mechanism. Acording to IEC 56 App. EE (1987), the circuit breaker
is defined as a sealed pressure system, that is an assembly for which no further
gas processing is required during its expected operating life.
t The fundamental feature of the circuit breaker- essential for the very concept
of a fully gas insulated switchgear- is its extremaly high dependability which means:
v high reliability
v long mechanical life: the circuit breakers are designed for 10000 mechanical
operation with no need to raplace parts with only ordinary maintenance of the
operating mechanism
v long electrical life: the capacity of breaking load and short circuit current is much
higher than it is normally required in 30years of operational life. by way of example,
the circuit breakers are guaranteed for the elctrical duration defined by Table IV
of the ENEL (Italian National Electricity Board) specification DY 1702.
v no need for any maintenance on the active parts
v manufactured under a fully quality assurance program.

GMh operating mechanism

GMh operating mechanism

SF1-G range circuit breakers are actuated by a GMh operating mechanism that
ensures switching device closing and opening speed that is independent of the
operator.
Circuit breakers equipped with a GMh electrical operating mechanism can perform
remote control functions and implement reclosing cycles.

A GMh electrical operating mechanism includes:

t a spring system that stores the energy needed to close and open the breaker,
t a manual spring charging system,
t an electrical motor spring charging device that automatically recharges
the mechanism as soon as the contacts close (time i 5 s),
t two mechanical push-buttons on the front panel for opening and closing,
t an electrical closing system including:
v a closing release for remote control and an anti-pumping relay.
t an electrical “opening” release system featuring one or more releases
of the following types:
v shunt,
v undervoltage,
v low power-consuming mitop*,
t operation counter,
t an optional “operating mechanism charged“ indication contact,
t an end-of-charging contact,
t a black and white mechanical “open-closed” position indicator,
t a multi-pin connector for isolating auxiliary circuits in the “disconnected“ position.
Auxiliary contacts
The GMh operating mechanism is equipped with a block of 15 auxiliary contacts,
including:
t 1 changeover contact for the electrical operating mechanism,
t 1 changeover contact for indication,
t 1 changeover contact for the shunt release.
The number of available contacts depends on the composition of the operating
mechanism and the options chosen. In any case the minimum available contact are
7 (4NC - 3NO).

* mitop: current-operated release used as an option with the Sepam 100 LA protection relay.

The Schneider recycling procedure for The Schneider recycling procedure

SF6 based products is subject to rigorous
management, and allows each device to
be traced through to its final destruction.

Within the framework of the group’s environmental policy, Schneider services

has made an operational procedure available, enabling medium voltage switchgear
to be processed while eliminating any release of SF6 into the atmosphere.
To help you to protect the environment, and to take care of your storage or
dismantling concerns, Schneider services offers to recover any of your equipment
that is reaching the end of its service life.
The GM6 has been designed with environmental protection in mind:
c the insulating and conducting materials that are used are identified,
easy to separate, and recyclable,
c SF6 can be recovered at the end of its life, and reused after treatment.
