NCM 7.

6 Release Notes
Last updated: March 14, 2017

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide
information about upgrades and describe workarounds for known issues.

For NCM environment requirements, see NCM 7.6 system requirements.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements NCM offers in this release, or compare this
release with previous releases of NCM.

Firmware upgrades
SolarWinds NCM 7.6 introduces a new feature that upgrades the firmware on many devices at one time. Because
security fixes are distributed as new firmware revisions, upgrading firmware helps network administrators correct
security vulnerabilities.

Simplified installer
Installation is easier due to a single SolarWinds NCM 7.6 component. There is no longer a separate NCM-NPM
integration component.

Performance Analysis (PerfStack)

Use the Performance Analysis (PerfStack™) dashboard to get both broad and in-depth visibility into your environment
by correlating disparate historical data points across your infrastructure, including on-premises, cloud, and hybrid
environments in easy to read charts. Click My Dashboards > Home > Performance Analysis to get started
correlating and analyzing data collected by your SolarWinds Orion solution to troubleshoot issues, identify root causes of
intermittent issues, and make data-driven decisions on infrastructure changes.

Native SSL support for the Orion Web Console
Seamlessly bind SSL certificates to the Orion Web Console and enable HTTPS connections using the Configuration
Wizard. The Configuration Wizard scans the Orion server for valid SSL certificates that you can choose for the binding,
or you can generate a self-signed certificate on the fly.

New customer installation

For information about installing SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager, see the accompanying NCM 7.6
Administrator Guide.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version of NCM, be aware of the following considerations:
• After NCM 7.6, future releases will no longer support Windows OS 2008 and 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL
Server 2008 R2. NCM 7.6 currently supports these versions. SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade to
Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016 at your earliest convenience. For more information, see End of
support notices.
• When upgrading to NCM 7.6, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the
Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.
• When upgrading to NCM 7.6 with custom menus, you can not see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu.
For details, see this article.
• Within NCM 7.6, the Alert Manager application has been deprecated and removed. Please use the web-based
Alert Manager through the Orion Web Console to create and manage alerts. For more information, see End of
support notices.
• When upgrading on the Additional Poller, you may receive this error " The license we have for Orion Scalability
Engine is outdated". See this article for details to resolve.
• Check the compatibility of NCM 7.6 for your upgrade path with this article.
• If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten
with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
• Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
• NCM 7.6 integrates with Network Performance Monitor version 12.1.
• Typically, you always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all
Orion products. Depending on your upgrade path, you may need to upgrade another product before progressing to
an NPM upgrade.
• If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
Depending on your upgrade path, you may need to upgrade another product before progressing to a SAM upgrade.

How to upgrade
Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:

• Use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path. The path provides the exact products and versions to
upgrade in a sequence to the latest versions.
• If you are upgrading:
◦ NCM and other modules (NPM, SAM, NTA, etc.), use the multiple products upgrade guide.
◦ NCM as a single product, use the single product upgrade guide.

Each guide includes checklists and instructions to help you plan and execute your upgrade.
• When you are ready, download the upgrade package from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

Known issues

Orion Web Console inaccessible after installing NCM

Issue: Access to Orion Web Console is blocked after NCM installation if the SQL account you have assigned to your
Orion Platform database has not been configured with appropriate permissions.

Work-around: Create a new SQL account with required permissions as detailed in this knowledge base article.

Node Discovery not adding nodes after upgrade

Issue: Node Discovery may not always successfully add nodes after an upgrade. This issue results when upgrading
from NCM 7.3.x to current versions.

Work-around: If you encounter this issue, following an NCM upgrade, add a new Connection Profile (select "Use for
auto detect"), and then re-run the node discovery.

Error connecting to devices with SSH-only login

Issue: NCM is not able to connect to certain devices with SSH-only login, receiving this error from the server: "Invalid
username or password".

Work-around: See this Knowledge Base article for the workaround to this issue.

means without the written consent of SolarWinds. All right, title, and interest in and to the software and documentation are and shall remain 9
the exclusive property of SolarWinds and its respective licensors.
Large reports export limitation
Issue: Unable to export large reports, such as vulnerability reports, that have more than 50,000 items.

Work-around: Open the report for editing, choose Edit Table in the Content section, and filter the results to 50,000 or
less.

Unable to manage pollers

Issue: If you have NCM installed as a stand-alone product, you cannot manage pollers in the SolarWinds Orion Web
Console's Threshold and Polling Settings.

Node Groups concept not supported

Issue: In versions 7.4 and later, NCM does not support the concept of Node Groups. You might notice that Web-based
reports look different in comparison with NCM 7.3 and before.

Work-around: To restore the previous display, edit the relevant report and add the appropriate property.

Drag-and-drop functions may not work properly

Issue: Resources such as Node List, Search NCM, Inventory Details, Compare Configs, Download, and all charts, stop
working when dragged and dropped.

Work-around: Refreshing the page should resolve this issue.

Issues after uninstalling NCM

Issue: After uninstalling NCM, you might encounter a problem when you open the SolarWinds Orion Web Console, and
charts you export to PDF may not display the correct time range or colors.

Work-around: If you encounter this issue, open the folder on your SolarWinds Orion web server, and remove all NCM
files.
