1
Introduction

Dratshang is mainly for the monk, as it is a school for them to learn. And it also a place where a
tshechu is conducted as thsechu was initiated long time ago as the most profound public teaching
like how we live our lives. Tshechu is something who brings everyone together at a time to be
with our family together. It was first started in Bumthang and it’s a celebration of Guru Rinpoche
extraordinary life and contributions.

Samdrup jongkhar Dratshang was established on 2009 as a district monk body. It is also known
as Rabdey Drtahsng. It was constructed by Garab Rinpoche as he have established many Rabdey
Dratshang including in Samdrup Jongkhar. It is located near Dzong.

In past dratshang was seeing enrollment decrease every year until when four new boys joined
them. At first there were only 60 monks instead of 80 and in present there is 80 monks, some of
them are young who are still in process of learning. Samdrup Jongkhar Dratshang has all the
facilities a monk needs, admission, food and lodging are free.

The dratshang contributes nu 860 to each monk annually into welfare scheme. It provides nu
100,000 in case of death of a monk or a family member. They hired monk from the Pemagatshel
to conduct the great prayer ceremony as they conduct ritual once in every month for the peace of
the community.

2
Problem Statement

I did research on this topic because to give more information to unknown people living in and
around the Dratshnag. And to make let them know that tshechu is being conducted as it has
meaning about how we the people live there life.

Significance of study

My project work would be as a source of future references and even for those who are interested
in exploring.

- Future references : through my projet work it would be benefit to the youth for the
references. And even I would be able to explain about samdrup jongkar dratshang to
those who I know and if in near future there is a student like me who is doing a research
about Samdrup Jongkhar Dratshang they can even use my project as there references.

Through my project I can make aware of Samdrup Jongkhar Dratshang to the near community
and even they would be able to share to their known people. And even I can encourage the youth
to attain tshechu sincerely instead of just roaming around.

Methodology

In process of doing research I have used both the qualities and quantities that is mix method.
Further I have used structure, unstructured and semi structure, in order to get more information
about this Dratshang.

Equipment

The equipment I used while doing my project is

- Camera
- Pen, pencil and book
- Laptop
- Mobile
- Internet

Sample selections

I have conducted interview to some of the people. Well some where senior citizens who were
living around the Dratshang for many years and some were senior monks and some were young
who were just in learning process.

And many of them very not sure about the information they were giving to me as many of them
were new out there so I was not able to get accurate information.

4
Data collection

I have collect data through questionnaires, interview and observation from the particular place.

Data analysis and interpretation

I have conducted the interview to some of the senior to get more information and even I did
interview to young ones in order to know what are they learning and what is taught by the
teacher.

Theme of the data interpretation

- origin of the Dratshang

Samdrup Jongkhar Dratshang was constructed on 2009 and it is also known as one of the
Rabdey Dratshang as it was constructed by Garab Rinpoche. Before there were only 60
monks instead of 80 were as now there is 80 monks, some are senior and some are
younger. For monks there are two bloc ks for them to live and one block for them to learn.
And there is a ground were people enjoys their time with there family.

5
- Importance of Dratshang
Dratshang’s main function and the reason for constructing is for the monks as it is a
school for them and it is also a house for them where they stay together like a family and
learn many new things.
And it is also for the tshechu which brings family together and it is for those people to
realize their mistake. As tshechu having a very great meaning.

- The reason behind constructing this dratshang

As some of the monks and community says that Dratshang was built little late and the
reason for constructing this dratshang is for monks as it is like there home and a school.
And for the peace of the community.

- Why tshechu is conducted?

Tsehchu is conducted because it is a kurim for the nation and the people. And the
importance is that one should have a complete devotion.
As it was first started in Bumthang and it is more than the celebration of Guru Rinpoche
extraordinary life and a contributions.
Well it is the eight manifestation of padmasambhawa were presented through eight forms
of dance.

- What knid of mask dance are been held in country?

6
1. Cham dance: it is performed by both laity and monks where ther are dressed are in ornate
costumes, with the evocative like- dance of the lords of cremation grounds” dance of the
terrifying deities” dance is accompanied by folk songs, while they usually wear wooden
masks that represent animlas, fearsome deities.
2. Atsaras ( clowns ) : they wear a red wooden masks and they does a naughty act, they even
bothersome but without them a tshechu would be too tame. The term atsara is derived
from the Sanskrit word acharya and is even called dubthop.

- What are the eight manifesto of padmasambhawa?

1. Dorji drool “ liberated diamond- thinder bolt” - who wears a garland of skulls around
his body holds a diamond thunder bolt and a ritual dagger.

2. Tshokey dorji “ diamond- thunder bolt born from a lake” – who is dressed in blue
brocade and wears a peaceful blue mask, carries in his hands a diamond thunder bolt
and a small bell.

3. Loden chogse “ he who wishes to acquire supreme knowledge” who wears a robe of
red brocade and a white masks with crown and holds in his hands a little bowl.

4. Padmasambhava “born from the lotus” clade in a monks robe of dark red and yellow,
wears a white masks with a pointed red hat, a so called pundit’s hat.

5. Guru Rinpoche “ most precious master” he wear a human mask of gilded cooper
crowned by his characters and is attended by two monks.

6. Shakya sengye – “ lion of the shakya family” – clad in red and yellow monk’s robe,
wear a mask resembling buddha’s face with a hairstyle of light blue curls, holds a
begging bowl a in his hands.

7. Sengye drathok – “he with the voice of a lion” clad in blue brocade, hisblue mask
crowned with five skulls is terrifying.
8. Nyima oezer- “ sunbeam” who is dressed in yellow brocade, wears a yellow mask
with bread of blue hair and holds a trident in his hands .
7
Ethical consideration

At first I introduced myself to the person who I am going to interview and then I explained them
about that for what purpose I am here and then after that I did an interview .

Conclusion

From the end of this project I have learn many thing about dratshang as well as the reason for the
constructing this dratshang. And it even inspired me to do an research about many new things.
Because of this a got an idea about how to research .

And I am also able to know about a tshechu and eight manifesto of guru rinpoche.
I also learn how to interact with the people.
