Diplomate in Functional
Neurology examination by
July, 2019. This will be the
core areas of Functional
Neurology and will require
300 hours of training in any
variety of courses. More on

indicated our journal, Functional
Neurology, Rehabilitation and
Ergonomics, eagerly requests
submissions of case reports.
The template should be online
shortly, but in the meantime I am
providing a copy of that template at
the end of this article to give each of
you a "head's up" in starting to think
about how to share interesting
cases.

A Q&A case report with Dr. Geronimo

I think all functional neurology
cases are remarkable. But since
I have to pick one that stands
out, I?ll present one of my
patients who has Hashimoto?s.
She experienced two traumatic
brain injuries (TBIs) about three
months apart.

She complained of the typical
Hashimoto?s symptoms.
Chronic fatigue, brain fog, poor
memory, thinning hair, poor
energy, and alternating
constipation and diarrhea.
However, after the second
concussion, she also
complained of light sensitivity,
poor balance, falling to her
right, odd tingling sensations
throughout out her body, and
severe anxiety.
She was diagnosed with
Hashimoto?s about four years
ago. She is 47 now but suffered
from fatigue, allergies, and
abdominal bloating since her
teens.

She had seen six other doctors
before she came to me,
including a naturopath and an
acupuncturist. Both had
recommended that she go
strictly autoimmune paleo
(AIP), which helped her
tremendously with her fatigue.
After her second TBI, her diet
was severely limited to chicken
and three to four vegetables. If
she strayed even with just
fruits and veggies, she would
get immediate abdominal
bloating, achy joints, brain fog,
and fatigue.

She sought me out after her
second TBI so I knew that this
was a neuro case from the
start. During my neuro exam I
observed she fatigued pretty
easily just with eye pursuits.

and she felt dizzy immediately
when she closed her eyes.

Initially, I only treated her with
functional medicine to get her
inflammation down. Since her
diet was already so restricted, I
put her on a supplemental
regimen aimed at modulating
her neuroinflammation and
boosting blood flow to her

At her three-week follow up,
she reported that she had
more energy, less sensitivity to
light, sound, and touch and felt
more stable with her balance
and posture. She was still
experiencing dizziness with
head and neck movements and
she was still severely
constipated with one bowel
movement a week.
The most frustrating part was
trying to add new veggies and
fruit to her diet. Every time
she tried something new, she
would bloat and not feel well.
Her stool test showed her
microbiome population and
diversity were both very low.
In order to improve she would
need more diversity in her diet,
but she simply could not
tolerate fruits and veggies such
as blueberries or spinach.
Her gut issues did not improve
until I started doing functional
neurology with her. To be
honest, I was going after her
dizziness, balance, and
coordination issues by doing
eye pursuits, saccades, and
canalith repositioning.
This not only helped with her
vertigo, but she was able to
have bowel movements on the
days of her treatments. Thus I
had her doing these exercises
at four times day at home and
she reported that she had less
bloating and was able to
introduce more food with less
reactions.

Her outcome was great. She is
still experimenting with
expanding her plant-based diet
but her dizziness, constipation,
and light and sound
sensitivities have all improved.

She was already aware that her
brain was injured from the
concussions so she was not
shocked about the brain
dysfunction. She was, however,
fascinated with how working
with her balance and
coordination improved her gut
issues.

medicine has helped expand
my patient base so has
functional neurology. I can talk
to a patient with a traumatic
brain injury or vestibular or
movement disorder and
explain to them how I can help
them with functional neurology
in a way no other doctor has.
