THE ASSOCIATION OF LONG BEACH EMPLOYEES (ALBE)
COMPENSATION STUDY REPORT
JOURNEY LEVEL
JULY 2018INTRODUCTION
‘This report contains a compensation analysis of 13 benchmark positions which ALBE (The Association of Long Beach Employees)
agreed to survey on behalf of its membership.
METHODOLOGY
A salary survey was conducted using ten comparator public agencies, The consultant analyzed the data to compare the City of Long
Beach’s salary ranges with those reported by the comparator agencies.
Classifications with less than three matches are considered invalid data. All benchmark positions had 3 or more comparable matches.
Salary data was collected from ten (10) comparator public agencies for thirteen (13) job descriptions. ‘The comparator agencies were
requested to provide job descriptions, and salary information (the monthly base pay for the job — minimum and maximum range),
Long Beach’s salaries were compared against the mean, median and 75" percentile of the comparator agencies’ salaries.
Mean: (Average) A simple arithmetic average is calculated by adding all occurrences of data, e.g., the average salary for a given job as,
reported by each survey participant, and dividing the result by the number of occurrences, i.c., the number of participants.
‘Median: (50 Percentile) The value in the middle of an array of data when the values are ordered by magnitude. Half of the values in
the sample fall above this number and half fall below, When the array contains an even number of values the median is midway
between the central values.
75" Percentile: The value of which 75% of the salaries are below the market and 25% of the salaries are above the market.
‘The ten comparator agencies are as follows:
‘The City of Anaheim
The City of Glendale
The City of Huntington Beach
The City of Los Angeles
The County of Los Angeles
