Why Social Media Is Bad For Teenager

As we know, social media such as, facebook, instagram, twitter, and many others
have become part of our life, especially teenagers. Today's teenagers are very much
dependent on social media. Most of them have smartphone now, so it gets easier for them to
connect and networking social media all the time. However, using too much social media can
be a bad thing or even dangerous.

First, lack of sosialization. Excessive use of social media can decrease human
interaction. So, people nowadays are mostly interacting through their phone and few are
interacting directly. Because of that, people today are not respecting each other. A study
published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine last year surveyed 7,000 19- to 32-
year-olds and found that those who spend the most time on social media were twice as likely
to report experiencing social isolation, which can include a lack of a sense of social
belonging, engagement with others and fulfilling relationships.

Second, cyber-bullying. According to wikipedia, cyber-bullying is a form of

bullying or harassment using electronic means. Bullying in social media are so much easier
because the perpetrators can easily hide under the identity they made in social media. In
a 2014 study by McAfee , nearly 87% of youngsters witnessed an act of cyberbullying. In a
more narrow study conducted on a single school, nearly 34% of 11 to 15 year olds students
said they were victims of this phenomenon.

Third, psychology. The increase in social media use has caused teenagers got mental
disorders such as, anxiety, envy, self-esteem, stress, depression, and ADHA.
A study published in the journal Computers and Human Behaviour found that people who
report using seven or more social media platforms were more than three times as likely as
people using 0-2 platforms to have high levels of general anxiety symptoms.

Fourth, addiction. Social media can make the user addictive to it. And if the user is
already trapped in social media world, it will be difficult to stop. In April 2015 in the US, it
was reported by Pew Research Centre that 24 per cent of teens go online almost constantly.

Social media indeed should be a media for people to connect each other easier. But,
some people abuse it, so it also can be a nightmare for us, for example cyber-bullying. Also
using social media continuously and too much can cause lack of socialization, addiction, and
mental disorders. Thus, using social media in the wrong and excessive ways can have a bad
impact.
