 school learning (earthly benefits) and bible learning (eternal

Scripture Passage / Paul’s Advice to Timothy

Bible Story: 1 Timothy 4:6-12; 2 Timothy 1:2-8; 2:1-2, 15; 3: 10-17

Discussion Starter: 10 minutes

1. Who knows what a tutor is?
2. Who knows what a mentor is?
3. What is the difference between a tutor, a mentor and a
teacher?
 Tutor – someone who personally (one-on-one) helps
you study a subject hard for you to understand.
 Mentor – someone who trains you to be like him/her in
a certain aspect (i.e. sports, music, writing, etc.);
teacher
4. Who knows what a disciple means?
 Disciple – a believer or a follower of someone
5. What is the difference between a disciple and a student?
 A disciple fully believes in and acts upon the teachings
of his mentor.
 A student may learn things from his teacher but may not
fully believe in these teachings.

 Example: In school, you are called a student. You study

all sorts of things (Math, Science, History, Chinese,
etc.). Some students study for the sake of knowing and
passing the test and graduating. They say to
themselves, “Why do I need to study this things when I
wont be able to apply it in real life?”

 A disciple is not like that. He eagerly learns from his

master all the lessons he needs to know (even if he
doesn’t want it) and in the end uses it and shares it to
others.
 Illustration: KUNGFU Panda – Po is the “disciple” of
Master Shifu.

 Timothy is a young man in the Bible who is known as the disciple

of Paul.
 He grew up in a Christian household, with his grandmother (Lois)
and mother (Eunice) both mentioned in the Bible as godly women
(2 Tim.1:5).
 Paul wrote letters to Timothy (1 and 2 Timothy) and in them we will
find many advices and instructions Paul had for Timothy.
 Why did Paul give Tim these advices and instructions? Because
Paul was about to die and he wanted Timothy (his disciple) to
continue in the faith even if his mentor (Paul) is gone.
 Proceed reading some parts of the letters Paul had for Timothy.
o (Suggestion): Write the verses in parchment paper or
any old-looking paper to give the effect that it’s the
actual letter for Timothy. Have the children read the
letters, pretending that they found the letters in an
archeological hunt.
o Important verses to include:
 1Tim. 4:6, 8-9, 11, 12
 2 Tim. 1:2-5, 8; 2:1-2; 3:10-11a, 14-15
 2 Timothy was the very last letter Paul wrote before he died.
That’s why in this letter, he included a reminder for Timothy that his
learning must continue even if Paul’s not around anymore.
 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV/NIV) “Study to show thyself approved unto
God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, and who
correctly handles the word of truth.”
 Let us be like Timothy. In following Paul, he was also following
Christ (because Paul followed Christ – 1 Cor. 11:1).
 Timothy didn’t wait until he was old enough to be a disciple. He
started young.
 What about you? Are you a disciple?
 You may be thinking, “I’m just a kid, I don’t need to be a disciple
now, I’ll just wait until I’m old enough.”
 When we say “I love Jesus” then we are claiming to be His
disciples.
 In John 14:15 Jesus said, “If you love me you will obey my
commands.”
 HOW CAN WE BE A DISCIPLE OF JESUS? (let kids recite)
o Read the Bible daily.
o Study the Bible daily. (difference between reading and
studying)
o Pray everyday. (Pray at all times, not just mealtimes.)
o Obey Jesus’ teachings.
o Tell others about Jesus.

Intro to Discussion: 15 minutes

The game we just played was all about the things we use for school.
Do you love going to school? (Allow children to answer). Some of you

do, some don’t, but did you know that we are STUDENTS FOR LIFE?
Learning is not just in school. Even after we graduate, there are still
so much things to learn! That’s LIFE!

Did you know that being a Christian is not just every Sunday when you
go to Sunday School? It’s a daily thing – we learn everyday from our
Teacher – Jesus! How? (Allow kids to answer). By reading the Bible
everyday and praying to God everyday. (SONG ♫)

What is the difference between school learning and bible learning?

 School learning – can only be applied as long as you live here on
earth. Is it important? YES. It will help you as you live your life.
 Bible learning – has both earthly and eternal applications. It
teaches us to live a good life here on earth, to be good and kind
and nice, but at the same time it teaches us to believe in Jesus so
that when we die, we can go to heaven to be with Him.

This means that just as we put so much importance in our earthly

education, we must not neglect our spiritual education!

Just as a student never goes to school unprepared, a disciple (follower

of Jesus) never goes to “school” (devotion = learning sessions with
Jesus) unprepared.

Here are the tools needed by students:

 Textbook
 Notebook / Paper
 Pen / Pencil
 Eraser
 School Bag

Here are the tools needed by disciples:

 Day’s experiences (School bag)
o Think of what you did the whole day.
o Have you been good or bad?
o What have you done today that you are sorry for?
o What blessings did you receive today that you are
thankful to God for?
 Bible (Textbook)
o to read and to study, to know what God wants and
doesn’t want us to do.
 Notebook / Paper; Pen / Pencil
o to take down notes of the important lessons we learned
from our Bible reading;
o to write down God’s “assignments” (commands) for us
so we won’t forget to do them.
o to write down stories about how God has been good to
us today.
o to write down what we are thankful to God for.
 Prayer (Eraser)
Binondo Full Gospel Family Center
