 Welcome to the Second Annual Battle Otha Bands!

Band #1 Introduction
 What you are about to hear is the organic music of the soul entangled in the
grind of a diesel engine. No partially hydrogenated oils added. No MSG,
emulsifiers, or artificial coloring. Surgeon General’s Warning: Not for the weak
of heart. Ladies and gentlemen, IDLE.

 Again, welcome to the Battle Otha Bands! Tonight we are going to witness
nine bands competing for some amazing prizes to be awarded by a panel of
seven judges and YOU! How precisely does all this work? …Has anyone here
seen Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It’s sort of like that.

 First of all, many of you are holding ballots in your hands. The scores of each
band will be used to determine who tonight wins THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE
AWARD! On the screen to your right, you see some criteria for evaluating
Idle’s performance. This screen will appear after each band so that you can
vote!

 Just push a number ONCE in order to vote and that handy antenna will be
constantly collecting the data. Can you change your mind? Yes. But it will
certainly take longer to tally, so think then push. Think….then push. Chuck J,
our master electronic voting coordinator, will greatly appreciate it. Say hello
to Chuck. (He works in the Auditing Office, so let’s be sure to show him a
great time tonight.)

 Also, just a note that the ballots you’re holding cost money. It’s true. Any
guesses? …..Yeah, they’re $250 a piece. That’s why we have your ID for
ransom and you are responsible for the return of your ballot to the table
located at the main doors. You may choose to allow others to vote with your
ballot, but only one number from each will be tallied.

 Tonight’s event is brought to you by the letters I-R-A – and that doesn’t stand
for the Irish Republican Army. It’s the InterResidence Association, a student-
driven organization that represents all on-campus students. Elections for thei
executive board positions will be next week, so keep your eyes peeled if you
live on-campus! Ask the staff here tonight how to run for a position to work
on awesome events like this, among other things.

 After our next band, we’ll take a few moments to meet our incredible panel of
judges. While this turnover is finishing up, however, we have a little trivia
contest in the spirit of tonight’s musical event. Can we get two raffle tickets
drawn for the audience participation portion?

 Trivia

 Winners of each of tonight’s contests get a FREE ticket to the April 24 th

Springfest Mainstage Event where Particle and Cake will be playing, preceded
by the winner of tonight’s event! To claim your tickets, just go out to the foyer
table and talk to the event staff. By the way, they can hear what’s going on,
so don’t try to just sneak back there and snake one.

Band #2 Introduction

 Rolling Papyrus is a jazz/funk/rock band hailing from Rutland and Charlotte,

Vermont. Their influences range from the music of Frank Zappa and Miles
Davis to the Screaming Headless Torsos and Spinal Tap. Their band members
include Ethan “Squirrel” Snyder on drums, Nathaniel Marro on saxophones,
Erik Gundel on guitar and lead vocals, and Jeremy Gartner on bass. Rolling
Papyrus will be playing two original compositions for tonight’s performance.
The first song is entitled Dig To China and was written solely by guitarist Erik
Gundel. The second piece is entitled Rubber Walrus and was written
collectively by the whole group. Rolling Papyrus would like to thank their
friends, family, Christopher Walken, cream soda, Canada, Gradnitos (the
exceptionally large burritos) and the color purple.

Judge panel introductions

 We’d just like to take a moment to introduce the judges, perched up there in
the balcony with their little clipboards and lights. How about each of you
wave or stand up – do something distinctive – when we start talking about
you.

 In hot seat number one….COMING TO YOU LIVE FROM THE DEAN OF

STUDENTS OFFICE, WE PRESENT DR. ANNIE STEVENS!! SHE IS THE ASST.
VICE-PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AND CAMPUS LIFE, BUT YOU CAN JUST CALL
HER DR. COOL! SHE IS AN AMERICAN-IDOL WANNA-BE WHO LOVES LIVE
MUSIC - ESPECIALLY PLAYED BY UVM COLLEGE STUDENTS! SHE HAD SUCH A
GREAT TIME LAST YEAR AT THIS EVENT, THAT SHE HAS RETURNED FOR A
SECOND YEAR OF JUDGING!

 Moving along the line-up, please welcome Danielle Kordani, a first-year

student here at UVM. Danielle enjoys sewing, helping people, and rocking out
to Megadeth. She will do just about anything for a back massage, loves
music, and can’t live without either….wait, no, that’’s just the music. For
Danielle, music is a basic need, like food, water, or chocolate. She has a radio
show on WRUV 90.1 and is also in SA concerts, which is producing Springfest.
Her motto tonight and perhaps always is “Party like a rockstar!”

 Mix the driest of wit with the punkest of style; throw in a pinch of ironic
cynicism and you get yourself one DJ Llu. She has love for the folk, the
techno, the hip-hop and most importantly the homegrown, Vermont sound.
Working in radio for over 10 years around Vermont and freelancing as a
concert promoter for the last 5, DJ Llu currently is in charge of the new music
program at 99.9 the Buzz on Sunday nights called Early Warning. Check it
out.

 Next, we’d like to welcome our very own Juror #4 - Joseph Thibault! Joe is the
current Student Government Association President and Chair of the Spring
Fest Committee. He loves music of all genres and especially enjoys live band
performances. He is happy to have the winner of our Battle Otha Bands as
an opener for spring fest this year, which is slated to be the biggest Fest
ever!

 An active saxophonist and woodwind player in New York City for over fifteen
years, he now joins us here as a Professor in the Music Department. Dr.
Alexander Stweart knows performing well and has recorded with many of the
greats. Before joining UVM's music department in 1999, Dr. Stewart served as
Director of Jazz Studies at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus. He
earned a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music and received a
Ph.D. in music with a concentration in ethnomusicology from the Graduate
Center of the City University of New York. We’re honored to have him here
tonight!

 TRACY?

 GEORGE?

 That, my friends, is the promised incredible panel of judges for tonight’s

event! We’ll see more of them at the end of the show as prizes are awarded!

Band #5 Introduction
 Since they wrote their very first song together in eighth grade, Chillum has
grown exponentially into a highly energetic and vastly entertaining
performance trio. Their sound can only be described as “a deeply layered
soul quaking tornado of intergalactic mojo.” This impressive group has been
dazzling audiences of al ages with their cosmic performances. The band (Josh
Korr on drums and vocals, Avi Salloway on guitar and vocals, and Jamie Riotto
on upright and electric bass AND vocals) has successfully blended their
different influences ranging from jazz to blues to rock and roll to down and
dirty funk. This band began gigging in Providence, Rhode Islane, but has
regular shows in MA, VT, and NYC. They recorded their first professional
album in 2003 with keyboardist Allon Dubler and are quickly broadening their
audience. Most importantly, Chillum puts on a good live show, never failing to
surprise and impress audiences everywhere they go. Put your hands together
for Chillum!

Prize Awarding and Thank Yous
 At this point, we would like welcome all of our performers tonight back to the
stage.
 Also, our judge panel should join us for awarding the prizes. First, however,
we’re turning the mic over to Melissa Conly, current Vice-President for IRA
and a member of the Battle Otha Bands Committee. Melissa?
Melissa: Tonight, you’ve all witnessed a true community event. From professors to
administrators to students to community members, this event would not be possible
nor successful without you! We’d like to take just a moment to thank the following
people. Please give each a huge round of applause:

 Rachel Bischoff of RMB Sound

 Charles (Chuck) Jefferis on the Resolver Ballots
 Abram Corbett, our videographer
 Our incredible judges
 All of our student volunteers this evening
 SA Concerts for volunteer collaboration
 The Springfest Committee in for bringing BOB into the mix
 Green Mountain Security for keeping the show under control
 UVM Media Services and Facilities for their support of this event

We’d also like to extend a special thank you to two people who have dedicated
enormous amounts of time and energy into making this event particularly enjoyable
even in the midst of their work and schoolwork: Your emcees for the night, E3K and
JSquared.

Another special recognition should be given to the nine students who’ve been
working for two months to get this show absolutely together. They’ve put in
countless behind-the-scenes hours working through selection process, event
logistics, publicity, and much else. This event is student-driven and, because of you,
was able to fly. Could all the member of the Battle Otha Bands Committee step
forward and receive a round of applause?

Finally, IRA and the BOB Committee would like to sincerely thank all the bands who
submitted sound clips for the selection process this year. We listened to 19 different
bands and had to make tough decisions about who would constitute this year’s
show. We wish the best to all bands that participated and encourage everyone to go
for it again next year! It doesn’t end tonight!

Don’t forget that IRA is looking for amazing student leaders to fill some leadership
positions for next year and we can give you information tonight. Thank you so much
for coming out for the show. Now, I’ll turn it back over to E3K and JSquared for prize
awarding.

Prize Awarding
 There are four prizes to be given tonight and the first was determined by the
very people in front of you (speaking to the bands). The People’s Choice
Award this evening was determined by the greatest total score of the bands
from audience feedback. At this time, we would like to recognize the
recipients of the Battle Otha Bands 2004 People’s Choice Award:
