Rain forests cover less than six percent of the earth’s area, but they have 100,000 kinds of all the kinds of plants
on the earth. Three-fourths of known kinds of plants and animals call the rain forest their home. Twenty percent of our
different kinds of medicine comes from rain forests. The glues on an envelope and in shoes come from tropical plants.
Rain forests provide materials for hundreds of other products.
Rain forests are also very important to the world’s climate. The Amazon rain forest alone receives about thirty to
forty percent of the total rainfall on the earth and products about the same percentage of the world oxygen. Some
scientists believe that the decreasing size of rain forests will affect the climate on the earth, making it uncomfortable or
even dangerous for life.
Saving rain forests is an international problem. One country, or even a few countries, cannot solve the problem
alone. The nations of the world must work together to find a solution before it is too late.

The Southeast Asian Games owns its origins to the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games or SEAP Games. On May
22nd, 1958, delegates from the countries in Southeast Asian peninsula attending the 3 rd Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan had
a meeting and agreed to establish a sport organization. The SEAP Games was conceptualized by Laung
Sukhumnaipradit, then Vice-President of the Thailand Olympic Committee. The proposed rationale was that a regional
sports event will help promote cooperation, understanding and relations among countries in the Southeast Asian region.
Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia (with Singapore included there after) were the
founding members. These countries agreed to hold the Games biennially. The SEAP Games Federation Committee was
formed.
The first SEAP Games were held in Bangkok from 12 – 17 December, 1959 comprising more than 527 athletes
and officials from Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, South Vietnam, and Laos participating in 12 sports.
At the 8th SEAP Games in 1975, the SEAP Federation considered the inclusion of Indonesia and the Philippines.
The two countries were formally admitted in 1977, the same year when SEAP Federation changed their name to
Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF), and the Games were known as the Southeast Asian Games. Brunei was
admitted at the 10th SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, and East Timor at the 22 nd SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The 2007 Southeast Asian Games were held in Thailand, which started from 6 th December and ended on 15th
December 2007, hosting the biennial event for the sixth time and it was also the most protested SEAG ever. The next
