WELCOME TO RACE WEEK
Race week is almost here! You have been training and fundraising for months, and we know it hasn’t always
been easy. But pretty soon, you’ll join others from TeamWoodside for an incredible experience that will
make all of your hard work worthwhile.
Here are some important tips for race week. Prioritize picking up your bib, Friday if you can, or Saturday as
soon as possible. Allow for extra travel time. Everything takes longer than you think it will. Don’t miss our
Detroit Marathon dinner on Thursday, October 18 @ 6:00 p.m. at Woodside Troy, 6600 Rochester Road, Troy,
Michigan. Stay off your feet. It’s not the time for a walking tour of Detroit. Keep this program with you
all weekend. Give copies to your friends and family.
TeamWoodside invites people to actively live God’s calling of “caring for the orphan and the widow.” When
people are introduced to the vision, they are forever changed. Many have joined TeamWoodside with a
blind faith, following their hearts more so than their heads. Their eyes are opened and their hearts are
broken for needy orphans and vulnerable children.
TeamWoodside offers the power of an active community. We are connected to a supportive, local
community through training and to a global community seeking to protect vulnerable children.
TeamWoodside seeks to model Christian unity -- anyone, including first-timers and people who aren’t as
physically fit, can join and actively live out their faith.
Becky and Paul are committed to working for TeamWoodside. They direct the overall training and
fundraising efforts, as well as the race weekend
events. They have been walking and running in
race events for 25 years. Becky has run several
half marathons, and in 2013, she completed the
Detroit Free Press Marathon. Paul ran his first
marathon in Detroit in 1996. Since then, he has
completed many marathons and ultra marathons,
including Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Cincinnati,
Marquette, Myrtle Beach, Phoenix, Disney, and
Never Summer.

THE STORY
TeamWoodside is a community of people helping each other cross the finish line while raising funds to
protect orphans. TeamWoodside will be running and walking the Detroit Free Press Marathon through the
streets of Detroit.
Why Orphans?
Every child deserves a safe home. Over 2 million Akha people live in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia,
and Southern China. Akha orphans are victims of the Southeast Asia sex slave trade. Vulnerable orphans
are targets, and nearly 100,000 girls and boys now work
as prostitutes. Woodside Bible Church built the Thailand
Orphanage, offering a safe and caring environment for orphans.
TeamWoodside partners with the Thailand Orphanage, helping to
create fullness of life for children in need.
Crowdrise
TeamWoodside partners with CrowdRise, an
innovative online fundraising tool. Each team
member creates a personal online fundraising
page and commits to raising funds for the
orphans. Make an eternal difference and
encourage a TeamWoodside member by donating to their fundraising page
at crowdrise.com at TeamWoodside.

DETROIT MARATHON
The marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario,
crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. You will run through historic
neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk.
The Start
The start line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue, one block from the TeamWoodside Race
Retreat. With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning at 7:00 a.m.,
which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace on the registration form.
International Event
The Marathon division is an international event crossing U.S. and Canadian borders twice. It is a privilege and an
honor to use the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel. Do not drop articles of clothing, water
bottles, tissue, or paper cups as you run across these prestigious landmarks.
Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, & in the finish line area.
Time Requirements
You must be able to complete the marathon in six and a half hours from the time the “Last Chance Pacer”
crosses the start line. The marathon course will close at 2:00 p.m. A “Last Chance Pacer” is a person who will
travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at six and a half hours. Your progress will be monitored
throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the “Last Chance Pacer”, you will be given fair warning to pick
up the pace. If you can’t keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the last chance pacer to be
transported back to the Start/Finish area.
The marathon offers two international border crossings during the course of the event. To continue providing
the unique opportunity of crossing the border twice, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel must re-open to vehicular traffic
at 10:00 a.m. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, the Detroit Free Press Marathon has
established milestones. Please carefully review these milestones.
13
INTERNATIONAL HALF MARATHON
The International Half-Marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and
Windsor, Ontario, crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
The Start
The start line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue, one block from the TeamWoodside
Race Retreat. With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning
at 7:00 a.m., which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace on the
registration form.
Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, and in the finish line area.
Time Requirements
A “Last Chance Pacer” will be provided for your event. These pacers will travel at the average pace
needed to cross the finish line at four hours. Your progress will be monitored throughout the race. If you
fall significantly behind the “Last Chance Pacer”, you will be given fair warning to pick up the pace. If you
can’t keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported back to the
start-finish area. The half marathon course will close at 11:30 a.m. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will re-open to
vehicular traffic at 10:00 a.m. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, the following milestones have
been established.
14
US-ONLY HALF MARATHON
The US-Only Half-Marathon course is wonderfully flat. You will weave through some pretty cool Detroit
neighborhoods, including Indian Village and Belle Isle, a nice little island park in the Detroit river. Some
of the last miles are along the lovely International Riverwalk, which will be a welcome distraction from the
weariness in your legs.
The Start
The Start Line is near the intersection of Cadillac Square and Bates Street. The final turn west will be from
Griswold Street onto Fort Street, and the Finish Line is near the intersection of Fort Street and Cass Avenue,
one block from the TeamWoodside Race Retreat.
Restroom Facilities
Portable restroom facilities will be available at the start area, on the course, and in the finish line area.
Time Requirements
You have three and a half hours to complete this race. A “Last Chance Pacer” will be provided for this
event. These pacers will travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at three hours and
thirty minutes. Your progress will be monitored throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the
“Last Chance Pacer”, you will be given fair warning to pick up the pace. If you can’t keep pace, you will
be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported back to the Start/Finish area. The half
marathon finish line will close at 2:00 p.m.
15
MARATHON RELAY
A team of two to five runners will cover the entire 26.2 mile distance. Each runner will run one leg of 3-7 miles.
A team can have as few as two members. However, this will require that some team members run more than
one leg. If someone is running multiple legs, they must run consecutive legs. Only teams with five members
will qualify for overall awards.

WOODSIDE DETROIT WORSHIP
Woodside Detroit Worship
201 W. Fort Street, Detroit, Michigan - Sunday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Come worship God on this exciting day in the midst of a marathon in the Motor City as Woodside Bible
Church of Detroit and Pastor Tim Holdridge lead us to embrace the truth and love of Jesus Christ.
Woodside Detroit opened its doors in the Motor City in 2012, located in the Cass Corridor between Midtown
and Downtown. A diverse and close church family that has a deep love for the community, including
professionals, homeless, entrepreneurs, young adults, families, and college students. Discover the love of
God and the love of our church family as we carry out His mission to bring His kingdom to the Motor City!
RACE ETIQUETTE
TeamWoodside requests that you consider these etiquette tips as you enjoy the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
• Please pay attention to pre-race instructions – both print and verbal. What you read and hear will not
only help guide you through the course but will keep you safe.
• Wear your race bib on the front of your shirt and SMILE! Photographers will be taking pictures of you
throughout the race.
• Please enter your correct start corral. This will ensure that you are running with people who have a
similar pace.
• Run or walk no more than two abreast. Other runners will want to get by you. If you are walking in a
group, please start in the last corral.
• If you want to run with a friend and they are in a different corral, the faster of the two can move back to the
slower corral.
• If you are stopping at a water station, move all the way over to the table. Grab water and move away
from the table so that others may get water too.
• Move to the side if someone behind you says “Excuse Me” or “Coming Through”.
• Shout words of encouragement to other runners. You will hear words of encouragement in return.
• When you are approaching the finish line, you may see loved ones cheering you on. Please do not
encourage anyone to join you in the finish line stretch. Your support team is very important, but please
communicate that the race course and finish area is for registered participants and staff only.
• Enjoy the post-race refreshments, but remember that others will want to enjoy the goodies too. Please
be courteous to those finishing behind you and take only one of each item.
18 Celebrate! Thank the volunteers and have a great race!
