AYAṆA

1.0. METHOD OF COMPUTING AYAṆA

If Sūrya transit from makara to mithuna, it construes to taking uttarāyaṇa [dakṣīnāyaṇa in

southern hemisphere].

1.1. ANOTHER DESCRIPTION OF AYAṆA

The śīśira [21.06 - 21.08], vasanta [21.08 - 21.10] and grīṣma ṛtu [21.10 - 21.12], these three
seasons are called saumāyaṇa (uttarāyaṇa), which are the days of divinity [from 21th june till
21th december aprox.].

Varṣa [21.12 - 21.02], śarad [21.02 - 21.04] and hemanta [21.04 - 21.06], these three seasons
are called yamāyaṇa, which are the nights of divinity [21th december till 21th june aprox.].

1.2. EFFECTS OF AYAṆA

2.0. DESCRIPTION OF HEMISPHERE AYAṆA

Sūrya's transit from meṣa to kanyā [21.03 - 21.09] is reckoned to be in northerly hemisphere
[southerly for those who live in south], belonging to Devas. From tula to mīna [21.09 - 21.03], it
is reckoned to be in the southern hemisphere [northern for those who live in south], belonging to
Yama.

2.1. EFFECTS OF HEMISPHERE AYAṆA

Those born on northerly course [21.09 - 21.03] will be wealthy, learned; will have sons and
grandsons. He will be honored by the king.

A person born in the southerly course [21.03 - 21.09] will be devoid of comforts and will live
in hallucination. He will be wicked, physically challenged and a poor person.

CONCLUSION

If a person is born between 21.12 - 21.03 (varṣa and half śarada - from 5th degree of dhanus till
6th degree of mīna), we have a mixture, while from 21.06 till 21.09 (śīśira and half vasanta -
from 5th degree of mithuna till 4th of kanyā) the same occurs.

Between both periods or from 21.03 to 21.06 (half śarada and hemanta) and from 21.09 till
21.12 (half vasanta and grīśma) both are southerly and northerly, respectively.
For computing the ayaṇa-bala [based on hemisphere ayaṇa] of a graha, we need to reverse all
the values, except those of Budha. In the case of Sūrya, his cheṣṭā-bala will be the same of his
ayaṇa-bala.
