Abstract
The 3DEXPERIENCE Release 2018x (R2018x) was announced January 23, 2018.
All of Dassault Systèmes’ cloud customers were successfully and seamlessly upgraded to R2018x
within a few hours and over the whole scope of the 3DEXPERIENCE offering.
3DEXPERIENCE R2018x continues to extend 3DS cloud offerings - already the largest Product
Innovation Platform offering available on the cloud.
o As a reminder:
3DS cloud portfolio represents the largest cloud offering of the ‘PLM’
industry by far. The cloud portfolio is appropriate for businesses of any size:
it includes a dedicated portfolio of Industry Solution Experiences, with
hundreds of roles on the cloud. The roles cover extensive 3D Modeling (e.g.
design and engineering, 3D design), Content and Simulation (e.g.
manufacturing and production, simulation), Information Intelligence (e.g.
data intelligence, search, etc.), and Social and Collaboration applications
(e.g. governance and lifecycle). In other words, virtually the whole portfolio
of the #1 PLM provider in the on-premise market (per CIMdata) is available
on the cloud today, on the single, unified architecture of the 3DEXPERIENCE
Platform.
The 3DEXPERIENCE on the cloud offerings bring the benefits of Software-as-
a-Service (SaaS) and cloud to all customers. A one-stop shop approach with
Dassault Systèmes as single point of contact whatever the deployment
mode, ensures that each cloud offer is deployed fast and turnkey, and
includes the associated optimized cloud provisioning and support.
o Release 2018x takes the number of roles available on the cloud, as well as
enhancements in their capabilities, to new heights. For instance, with R2018x, the
3
cloud offering includes more than 95% of 3DS exhaustive design and engineering
portfolio. In other words 95+% of the most advanced and comprehensive design &
engineering portfolio on the market today, is available on the cloud.
o As the number of customers on the cloud fast increases, R2018x takes a big step
forward to best match customers’ needs on the cloud
With content configuration, customers can easily tailor the objects of
processes according to their own specific business needs, without losing the
seamless updates that a cloud environment offers.
They can now leverage simplified change processes.
A new cloud service enables data replication in the region closest to the user
location for optimum performance.
And multi-systems integration for the cloud to enhance further value chain
collaboration, and downstream processes (e.g. publish to ERP).
The release also brings native Supply Chain Planning and Optimization roles from Quintiq
on the platform:
o Four new roles roles are focused on Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), the critical
business process that brings together Sales, Finance, Production, Marketing and
other key departments to balance demand and supply in the supply chain on an 18-
month. S&P is a critical forward-looking decision making process, which then
triggers and feeds the rest of the supply chain management processes such as
supply chain planning and production planning. The four new roles are: Supply Chain
Director, Demand Planner, Collaborative Forecasting, and Supply Planner.

3D Modeling Apps’ Select Enhancements
With 3DEXPERIENCE Release 2018x (R2018x), users can benefit from many new and
enhanced DESIGN/ENGINEERING roles: there are 85 roles on premise, 80 roles on cloud as a
whole in R2018x. Overall, 13 New Roles, and over 600 new or enhanced functions have
been added.
CATIA brings the new Stamping Die Designer role, which increases productivity by guiding
users from the conceptual planning through to detailed tooling design of complex stamped
sheet metal parts. Easy to use specialist features and wizards guide the user in best
practices, helping the tool designer work with and extend complex surfaces without
having to be a surfacing expert. The role has a discipline-specific set of functions for the
optimization of stamping direction, creation of addenda surfaces, trim lines and spring-back
compensation, all with full associativity to the original part geometry. This ensures high
quality die geometry and right-first –time tooling.
6
o This results in fully-usable high-quality real surface geometry, within your
engineering and manufacturing CAD environment. The geometry can be directly
refined and shared on the 3DExperience Platform by all disciplines, from detailed
design through analysis and manufacturing. For instance, the product can then be
comprehensively validated using full loading conditions such as frequency and
buckling.
This release also introduces design features dedicated to specific manufacturing processes,
such as overhang constraints for 3dprinted parts and a reconstruction wizard for milled
parts.
R2018x delivers multiple advances in Cyber Systems Engineering, the multi-disciplinary
design methodology which integrates RFLP product definitions. These are extending
an already unique solution which delivers digital continuity to design, validate and
experience mechanical, electronic and software systems, and fully integrates with other
existing systems.
o The new Electrical and Electronic Architect role allows web-based definition,
7
With 3DEXPERIENCE R2018x, users can benefit from enhanced BIODESIGN roles in the
BIOVIA portfolio. The release now features 4 roles as well as adding cloud capabilities for
one of those roles.
The existing Scientific Decision Maker role (BDV) brings to R&D scientists involved in a
“discovery” process (whether it is for a new drug compound, or a new material) a
Discovery Cockpit, i.e. a full collaborative decision making environment to select and
investigate those drugs/materials:
o First, they can define the desired “Target Product Profile”, which could specify,
for instance, the ability to bind to a specific target and not to other similar
targets.
o Then they can specify the “Discovery Decision Path”, that is, the specific
experiments to be run, and the thresholds (i.e. the decision criteria) to be reached
by the drug candidates to be eligible, or promoted to the next R&D
phase/experiment.
o As each drug goes through the experiments defined in the “Discovery Decision
8
The existing Clinical Outcome Modeler role (BPH) enables the prediction of drug efficacy and
safety at the population level, and the design of more informative clinical trials through
pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics simulations. The user experience has been designed
to be extremely intuitive and to democratize such modeling approaches and simulations
as a result. The role is aimed at pharmacometricians and clinicians to build and share
graphical drug-disease models, build populations and samples of patients to simulate
the effect of the drug on specifics populations, test several administration protocols to find
the best clinical trial design. They can then perform clinical trials simulations to assess the
response of populations to new drugs. Again, the role has been designed to ease project
reviews e.g. through the ability to compare several simulation results across patients or
administration protocols, and to navigate through results graphically. 3DEXPERIENCE R2018x
brings enhancements to the Clinical Outcome Modeler role that improve clinical trial
simulations by taking into account covariance. Essentially, there is a covariance between
parameters of the models between different patients that are taken into account. This is
important to develop the better clinical trial simulations that researchers seek. The role was
In 3DEXPERIENCE R2018x, users can benefit from many powerful SIMULATION roles: there
are now 27 roles on premise, and 22 roles on public cloud. The release now features 48
SIMULIA applications, including 9 new apps. The portfolio connects standalone products to
the platform, delivers an end-to-end capability for Additive Manufacturing, demonstrates
commitment to fluid simulation, and improves the well-known Living Heart capability.
The release opens the power of the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to users of SIMULIA ‘standalone’
products including Abaqus for structures, and – at R2018x Functional Delivery 01- to
users of XFlow for fluids, Simpack for multibody simulation, and CST for
electromagnetics.
SIMULIA customers today have large investments in standalone simulation software tools,
including software costs, end-user training, existing data files, and simulation methods &
scripts. These tools are used by simulation experts who are focused on generating
simulation results, and do not include out of the box capabilities for enabling much needed
collaboration & sharing, and simulation management.
3DEXPERIENCE R2018x changes all that.
9
It brings out-of-the-box capabilities to capture & publish best-practices, share & collaborate
on results & methods, and integrate fully with non-experts. Files and data from these tools
can be brought onto the platform to be managed, tagged, cataloged, preserved, and shared.
One value to the existing user is that the data, methods and results of simulations –
including his own - are more easily accessible & visible (and hence more valuable)
throughout the work-group and the enterprise with no disruption to existing methods and
tools. In addition, simulation jobs created within these tools can be launched by the
platform compute orchestration framework (which manages where the simulation is run,
how it is run, and how much it costs), including new access to On Cloud burst compute
licensing for Abaqus/Standard.
An overall value to the enterprise is simulation activities become visible and available to
everyone to improve decision making through improved understanding of product
performance and bring clarity on how to deliver the right products to market in the shortest
time.
As part of the complete end-to-end Dassault Systèmes solution for digital Additive
10
A complete set of Multiphysics solution capabilities are required in order to power complete
end-to-end industry solutions with simulation. Dassault Systèmes is rapidly expanding its
portfolio of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) offerings.
There are three parts to the CFD portfolio currently offered by Dassault Systèmes:
o Mainstream CFD simulation, for native steady-state and mildly transient flows
o CFD simulation for highly complex transient flows in the XFlow product suite, and
o Industry-specific CFD simulation in the Exa product suite for the Transportation &
Mobility, Aerospace & Defense, and Natural Resources industries.
This release brings numerous enhancements to mainstream CFD simulation. We can now
address high Mach number flows in subsonic, transonic and supersonic regimes with our
new compressible flow solver. We have added moving reference frames (MRF) capability to
model rotating domains including flow around fans and propellers. Our new Volume of Fluid
(VOF) based solver enables users to model free surface flows involving interaction between
two different phases e.g. flooding scenario with water and air. The user experience also
features more guided assistance e.g. the new assistant panel in Fluid Mechanics Analyst role
11
3DEXPERIENCE R2018x includes many advances in MANUFACTURING & PRODUCTION:
users can benefit from 3 new roles plus many enhancements to manufacturing & production
roles from DELMIA both on premise and on the cloud.
Release 2018x further enhances the digital continuity from Design Engineering to
Manufacturing and Production. New in the release, the manufacturing bill of material
(MBOM) can be defined, managed, and updated directly from the 3D design, thereby
exploiting both the engineering and the manufacturing contexts. The new
Manufactured Items Manager role (MFN) is a web app that uses the product structure /
EBOM - with its 3D and positioning data - as input to the MBOM and makes the authoring
process intuitive and easy. For instance, users can cross-highlight between product
structure, MBOM, and 3D. Also, users can simply drag and drop the design data to create the
MBOM from scratch, or create it from the existing product structure, or from a previously-
created ‘MBOM-creation template’. These user defined templates encapsulate
manufacturing knowledge and know how, save time, and reduce re-work as the user applies
them across their different situations (e.g. different BOMs, processes, locations, etc.). The
12
DELMIA brings Virtual and Reality (V + R) closer together by enhancing its digital
environment for engineering the additive process. Using DELMIA Shop Floor
Equipment Engineer (EQE), Machine Vendors can create a 3DEXPERIENCE twin of
their additive machine. The DELMIA ‘Virtual Additive Machine’ is built with the correct
geometry, programming attributes, and the proprietary scan path algorithms from the
machine vendor for each material of use. The Virtual Additive Machine can then be used
in DELMIA Additive Manufacturing Programmer (AMP) to examine in 3D how the machine
behaves under the input machine-specific parameters e.g. how the machine will process the
laser path for any given part or material, so as to fine tune the additive manufacturing
process at hand. This gives the user the capability to develop an additive strategy to be used
in production that is based on the actual machine. Once the additive strategy has been
engineered, the user can output the machine-specific file format containing all parameters
and definition for the process, to the actual machine. The Virtual Additive Machine
dramatically improves the first time quality and accelerates time to market by leveraging the
13
leverages 3DS' data intelligence capabilities in analysis of complex product structures and
data models, aided by strong semantics, machine learning, and 3D visualization. It extends
the promise and collaborative power of the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, by giving everybody
direct visibility and deep understanding of the actual PLM data and activities.
o In R2018x, PLM Analytics is extended to the Digital Mock-Up itself to allow for
automated, and very fast weight & balance computations.
o Also, all PLM Analytics roles have been enhanced. For instance, users can now
perform root cause analysis of issues, analyze cost impact from changes, or analyze
resource allocation on projects.
o Additionally, the 3DEXPERIENCE R2018x brings a new Field Issues Intelligence Role
which enables users to analyze issues data, wherever it comes from inside or outside
the enterprise, to improve support and service, and to be leveraged as an input for
designers and engineers for continuous improvement. It tracks and anticipates
product issues for risk management, predictive maintenance, and product
engineering/quality improvement.
14
who detects that positive sentiment on his product has declined by more than 10%
over the past week can get a summary of negative articles/posts. In Release 2018x,
NETVIBES has added new triggers and actions. For instance, you can now publish
charts and articles to 3DSwYm, upload files to 3DDrive, and publish content to
Twitter automatically using Potions. With NETVIBES PushMail, you can use Potions
to send customized email reports to anyone, using the charts, information and style
you choose.
15
now take advantage of Services Product Manager and Services Product Development roles
that allow users to define and manage a portfolio of service products, tailored for sectors
financial services, insurance, and telecommunications. These roles leverage the same
breakthrough data-driven development and collaborative business processes as the other
industries, allowing any company delivering financial and business services to go from idea
to sales faster and more efficiently.
16
look & feel, interactions and animations leveraging body physics, VR scripting and
optimization of runtime performance, and overall behaviors. Pre-set filters streamline the
workflow by optimizing content for the right marketing channels (e.g. online or on premise),
via selection of model structure, geometry, material, textures, lighting and ambience. High
resolution media can be produced and the marketing experience packaged for distribution.
3DEXPERIENCE Release 2018x introduces new roles for supply chain planning and
optimization from Quintiq. The first 4 new roles are focused on Sales & Operations Planning
(S&OP) and available on the cloud: Supply Chain Director, Demand Planner, Collaborative
Forecasting, and Supply Planner. S&OP is a forward-looking decision-making process,
which aims to balance demand and supply in the supply chain on an 18-month
horizon. Companies with more mature S&OP processes also integrate financial planning with
operational planning and link high-level strategic plans to their day-to-day operations. Cross-
functional in nature, this business process brings together Sales, Finance, Production,
Marketing and other key departments, and is typically carried out on a monthly cadence.
17
o The Demand Planner has a holistic view of all data relevant to forecasting future
demand e.g. historical sales, sales opportunities, and planned promotions. Data is
multi-dimensional and users can organize them into the specific hierarchies that
best match the needs of their respective departments. (e.g. product hierarchy, sales
hierarchy, geographical hierarchy, etc.). For example, for a given product family (i.e.
a specific node in the product hierarchy), a given sales organization (in the sales
hierarchy) and a given territory (say a country in a the geographical hierarchy), there
will a historical sales number, sales opportunities and planned promotions in time,
from which the sales forecast at the intersection of these hierarchies will be defined.
Various properties such as characteristics of a product family or annual revenue of a
customer segment can also be defined and added to each hierarchy. Once this is
done, users can slice and dice the data in real time to present it from various points
of view – from marketing to sales to finance. They can also view and edit the data on
different time granularities (from daily to yearly horizons) and different levels within
the data hierarchy (from SKU level to product group level). Using statistical
