southern Wisconsin were gathered by examining reports in the Wisconsin Archeologist
(courtesy of J. Williams).

a. Create a dot diagram.
b. Calculate the mean and median and then mark these on the dot diagram.
c. Calculate the quartiles.

2. (5.31) In bidding for a remodeling project, a carpenter determines that he will have a net
profit of $5000 if he gets the contract and a net loss of $86 if his bid fails. If the
probability of his getting the contract is .2, calculate his expected return.

3. (5.67) Suppose 15% of the trees in a forest have severe leaf damage from air pollution. If
5 trees are selected at random, find the probability that:
a. Three of the selected trees have severe leaf damage.
b. No more than two have severe leaf damage.

4. 6.34 The diameter of hail hitting the ground during a storm is normally distributed with a
mean of .5 inch and a standard deviation of .1 inch. What is the probability that
a. A hailstone picked up at random will have a diameter greater than .71 inch?
b. Two hailstones picked up in a row will have diameters greater than .6 inch? (Assume
independence of the two diameters.)
c. By the end of the storm, what proportion of the hailstones would have had diameters
greater than .71 inch?

5. (8.12) Assume that the standard deviation of the heights of five-year-old boys is 3.5
inches. How many five-year-old boys need to be sampled if we want to be 90% sure that
the population mean height is estimated within .5 inch?

6. (8.28) In a study to determine whether a certain stimulant produces hyperactivity, 55 mice

were injected with 10 micrograms of the stimulant. Afterward, each mouse was given a
hyperactivity rating score x = 14,9. The mean score was and s = 2.8. Give a 95%
confidence interval for the population mean score µ.

7. 8.54 A company’s mixed nuts are sold in cans and the label says that 25% of the contents
is cashews. Suspecting that this might be an overstatement, an inspector takes a random
sample of 35 cans and measures the percent weight of cashews [i.e., 100(weight of
cashews/weight of all nuts)] in each can. The mean and standard deviation of these
measurements are found to be 23.5 and 3.1, respectively. Do these results constitute
strong evidence in support of the inspector’s belief? (Answer by calculating and
interpreting the P–value.)

8. (8.76) From telephone interviews with 980 adults, it was found that 78% of those persons
supported tougher legislation for antipollution measures. Does this poll substantiate the
conjecture that more than 75% of the adult population are in favor of tougher legislation
for antipollution measures? (Answer by calculating the P–value.)
9. (9.66) Combustion efficiency measurements were recorded for 10 home heating furnaces
of a new model. The sample mean and standard deviation were found to be 73.2 and 2.74,
respectively. Do these results provide strong evidence that the average efficiency of the
new model is higher than 70? (Test at α = 0.05. Comment also on the P–value.)

10. (10.22) To compare the effectiveness of isometric and isotonic exercise methods, 20
obese male students are included in an experiment: 10 are selected at random and
assigned to one exercise method; the remaining 10 are assigned to the other exercise
method. After five weeks, the reductions in abdomen measurements are recorded in
centimeters, and the following results are obtained.

a. Do these data support the claim that the isotonic method is more effective?
b. Construct a 95% confidence interval for µB - µA
